Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
I don't think it's a huge deal for little kids to wait at the bar but I don't know why it's necessary. I get that kids learn how to behave in social settings by being in them but I don't know why a 5 year old needs to know how to behave in/at a bar.
When we were little, my father used to take us into the bar once in a while. He never let us sit at the bar. We got our sodas with extra cherries and were seated at a nearby table or given lots of change to play pinball or other game in the place.

a bar is different... I dont think kids belong in a straight up bar but a restaurant with a bar.. i get it...if you are waiting to be seated.

I don't a child yet, so I can say this while I'm still counted under the CF umbrella..
This past weekend, DH and I went for sushi at semi nice place, and we noticed a little girl, no more than 7 eating sushi with chopsticks!! I'm sure she learned from her parents going to restaurants. She handled it so, well and I was so impressed. How many 7 year olds will actually eat sushi without making a face? I don't know any.. not one! So maybe this whole idea of "knowing your place" in society is kind of backfiring on us.
Many of us CFers have this sense of entitlement of having a child free zone when they go out.. and I only see that here.. everywhere else in the world, children are welcomed into the fold, and as a result are more mature because of it. I understand that we must treat a child like a child, but part of growing up is to learn how to act and behave in social settings, and how else to do that but to actually put them right into it.
JMO..
Very true. My nieces were raised from the beginning going to nice restaurants. They eat everything and they act so nicely at restaurants. Once my DD is old enough to understand we will do the same.
Thank you, how else do they learn!!!!
To the OP, I think nothing

I grew up in a bar- it's definitely an Irish thing. We actually held our Irish step dancing classes for the parade in the bar on Sundays afternoons.
This was totally me. And I loved shirley temples!!!!

Don't forget you can't let your son paint his nails. It will turn him gay.

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
Personally, I don't care if a kid is sitting at the bar as long as there are not adults standing or waiting to get a drink....
If I were the bartender, I might have a problem with two kids drinking shirley temples for $2 when I could have two adults drinking $10 martinis...
However, if a kid is sitting at the bar I am sitting at, I would think that the parents have to be open to any sort of language or conversations going on around them in that bar... not that I talk like a trucker, but I have been known to drop the F-bomb every now and then and don't think it's right that I would have to "watch" what I am saying so as not to offend the kids on the next stool

I don't have any problem with it... and about the language the children could listen, I think that my son has listened to worse things in the subway.

My parents always let me sit with them at a bar while we were waiting for the rest of our party to arrive. Same thing - I would sit there with my shirley temple
My grampy used to do this with me when I was little too ...memories
