I can't find the article anymore but I read something that explained why Covid didn't spread as much in FL as in other low restriction states.
One reason was that people basically didn't listen to their idiot governor and still wore masks at relatively high rates compared to similarly restricted states.
Another had to do with the ability to be outdoors for so many activities where science shows the spread is much less than indoors.
TX will be interesting because I believe the second should apply but not so sure about the first.
I haven't been to Florida since the pandemic started but everyone I have spoken to who has been there recently, including friends who live there, have told me that many, many people do not wear masks. And personally I would not bank on the people of Florida being any more intelligent than the people of Texas.
As for Florida, I wouldn't be so quick to call DeSantis an idiot. Here's an interesting article pointing out a lot of the facts around this, but what stands out to me is they did not fare much worse than anyone else (In fact they are pretty middle of the pack), but their economy is doing great, unemployment is low, schools have been able to remain fully open... It's interesting. And I too thought DeSantis was the biggest idiot out there at the beginning of this but I feel like I have to eat my words now.
A year into the pandemic, Florida is booming and Republican Gov. DeSantis is taking credit
Let’s talk about how I didn’t travel for presidents week, you know because the tri-state area is so safe. To only get Covid right here in my own backyard. Had I gone to a cabin in PA or even FL like I wanted to. I would’ve been fine and probably not have gotten it. Instead of taking a week off for relaxation and change of scenery, I took a week of to lay in bed and watch TV.
My husband will never hear the end of it because he vetoed the trip

And at best he didn't kill thousands of the most vulnerable people in the state by sending Covid positive patients to nursing homes rather than utilizing the Javits center, the navy ship and all the other available beds that were secured for that use. And then lie about it. Multiple times. While writing a book about how great he handled the pandemic. So who's an idiot?

YES!!!!!
But it's like no one can admit maybe NY got it wrong???? People have to double down by continuously talking about how bad other states are doing. But just look at the data and you can see it's not the case!

Exactly and Gov. Murphy has been in the hot seat for months about the nursing homes and the way it was handled. Last year when we were at all time highs and in the thick of it, 50% of deaths were senior citizens and a majority of those were traced back to nursing homes.

Because many believe NY is the center of the known universe and it can do no wrong. And the asshole who runs it was worshiped like some kind of deity for years and years. The fact that he is finally getting his comeuppance is splendid.

I don't disagree with either of you. What I will say is that NY was the first state to get hit hard with the virus...not WA or LA but NY. It's spread aggressively because no other state has the population density or mass transit that NY does. I don't think the mandates last Spring were out of line as we knew almost next to nothing about CoVid and the spread. As we moved into summer, I think Cuomo continued to flex his muscles and power and liked getting in to a pissing contest with De Blasio. I also believe that Cuomo's continued mandates were to make him look better for his book sales.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say we aren't going to see any big spikes in Texas although ironically I am sure a few of the posters here are really hoping for it.
I hope everything before "although" is dead on the money, and everything after it is dead wrong.
There are definitely some posters who seem to want a spike so they can say "I told you so." I think to some of these posters it's more about being right, because if they are wrong then they have to admit that all of the "science" they are relying on might be imperfect.
My thought is that the "science" is evolving because even though you lock things down, ultimately people are still going to do whatever they want to do, and it is probably spreading at home way more than it is at restaurants, bars, sporting events, etc.
I don't think anyone wants to be able to say "I told you so". I think people/posters are nervous. Even with all safety protocols in place - there will be an increase in Covid cases. Will it constitute a spike? Who knows. I think an outbreak/spike is more dependent on how many people follow protocol. If you try to distance and keep yourself masked...the number of cases should be lower if we look at schools and how they have been able to damper the spread. But if no one wears a mask - then you are going to have more people come up positive like you do at outside parties where no one wears a mask. I would really like to see a successful large public event not result in a spike. I want to move to learning to live with this virus.
Agreed. There's been some real nastiness on this site--which usually signifies unhappiness, but that would be a new level of cruelty and sadism, which would indicate a very sick and broken person. Can't imagine anyone who wouldn't love to hear that covid isn't causing deaths and harm, spread is stopping, masks aren't necessary, etc. Personally, I think we will get there, but I am also grateful to be where we are, and I am very appreciative of life and taking nothing for granted.

Agree with JennP. California's governor also got caught engaging in some hypocritical behavior. There is lots to criticize about many leaders from both parties. I don't think there are two definitive sides on everything; we all have independent judgments that most of us can share without rabidly attacking others.

Texas is open!
I said this at the beginning of the pandemic that either the whole country needed to shut down for a short period of time to let the virus die out or we needed to stay open with precautions. Having some states do one thing and other states do something else is just ridiculous unless all the borders were shut down, which is almost impossible.
Cuomo the entire pandemic was saying we needed to quarantine and limit ourselves to save those most vulnerable. Well that did not happen when he sent all those seniors back to the nursing homes as well as sending the disabled back to their group homes. Those are the people we were told to sacrifice and save and he just let them die. There is no forgiving that.
The hospitals and doctors now have a much better understanding of this virus and medications are working for many, if not most. There is no reason to continue most of the guidelines. The vaccines are getting out there which is great but there is no guarantee that people will not get sick after they are vaccinated. They have no data on how long it lasts. Do we need boosters? Can we pass it on? No one knows for sure and we can not continue to live our lives 6 feet apart and away from everyone we love.

Re: Texas is open!
Here is where I think some is lost in translation. And I may be incorrect in how I’m recalling my understanding of the shut downs in spring of 2020. My understanding was that the shut downs were done to prevent overwhelming of hospital systems; not to prevent the spread of the virus. I think the shut downs have morphed into an attempt to stop the spread which would have never been successful until you can understand how it is spread. Last spring we didn’t really understand how it was spread other than an aerosols. I think our continued shut down in this State did not need to continue as it has. You know it’s funny and Nervousnell said this but - every time there’s a new accusation against Cuomo he seems to lift mandates. It’s probably coincidental but who knows

Um, but we weren't talking about Cuomo.
The whataboutism is pointless.
They can BOTH be idiots.
And yes, DeSantis is an idiot for multiple reasons that I don't have time to get into.
Agree with JennP. California's governor also got caught engaging in some hypocritical behavior. There is lots to criticize about many leaders from both parties. I don't think there are two definitive sides on everything; we all have independent judgments that most of us can share without rabidly attacking others.
Who is rabidly attacking anyone over the mistakes of the governors? did I miss something?
No you didn't. It's just the usual over the top drama words she likes to use. Rabid. Please. I need to find a drama llama to use on these posts.

Nobody is surprised or confused. People are questioning the double standard and hypocrisy. It’s pretty clear what the objections or questions are. Also Why this site, which, is basically being moderated by NO ONE, only pops up to remove this one person. Very odd.
Secondly, we also don’t care enough to reach out to site admin or Lone Ranger who mostly likely won’t respond. Said person can clarify by posting a response to the many pages and threads that have been posted about this. Instead they continue to watch everyone rip each other a new one over this topic.
Not worth the energy for no results.
But my point is that it's not a double standard or hypocrisy if it's about the doxxing which to my knowledge no one else has done. Social media platforms often remove people who engage in that.
And plenty of people are devoting energy to complaining about it so reaching out might be more productive. They have addressed things like this in the past although it's been a really long time. But someone is obviously around.
I understand what you are saying and I don’t think that’s the whole picture. You refuse to see what we are saying.
Wishing some dead is not a violation of a this site? Get my point? That is why we keep bringing up that its hypocrisy at best.
And yes they can do whatever they want with their site and I can continue to post whatever my opinion is until I get kicked off or stop posting.
Plus it’s clear the politics board is only ok or civil when no one disagrees with the popular opinion on here. Other posters aside from Vb have gotten attacked on here for simply disagreeing with the masses. VB isn’t the only sh!t stirrer on this board.
I was told to go seek mental help repeatedly and then it was defended and excused why it was ok to say that to me.
All we are trying to say is POT meet KETTLE.
Let’s also not ignore the poster who likes to use phrases such as “how embarrassing for you” and “why are you still here?” when someone expressed an opposing opinion. It’s not civil-it’s bullying. And it’s a shame that this person is someone who is likely teaching these minimizing techniques to her children.

Please stop with the "opposing opinion" nonsense. The issues that many have with VB have nothing to do with an opoosing opinion, it's the simple fact that she cannot in any way stay on topic or have an adult conversation without resulting to creepy personal attacks and making every effort to derail whatever post she's on.
VB is her own worst enemy, people just respond to the crap she puts out and the fact is, she LOVES the drama. If she stopped being a combative, weird stalker then nobody would have an issue. Everyone else on here manages to have a difference of opinion and still converse. Things only ever go south when VB chimes in.

For those disappointed about VB, don't worry. She'll be back. She never stays away long.
I didn't know she was banned again and I don't really give a shit either way, but for those constantly at her defense, why don't you reach out to admin and ask why they ban her? I would imagine it's not because of the stream of insults she emits (that many choose to ignore) but because of the doxxing incidents which probably violate the terms of service.
I am not talking about the time she dug up my age on this site. I am talking about other peoples' multiple situations where she took their personal information and used it for research OUTSIDE this site.
Personal information like full names? DOB? SS#? Please! Lol!! I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again, if u don’t want people to use information U have shared in a PUBLIC forum, then don’t say it. It’s up to u if u wanna say what kind of job ur DH has, or if u have kids, or what’s ur profession but then don’t get all pissy if someone else brings it up. I seriously don’t get that mentality.

Interestingly enough that “idiot” governor was the one to decide that the elderly subpopulation would be the first one to get the vaccines. The subpopulation that would be most susceptible to this virus.

People just respond to the crap she puts out and the fact is, she LOVES the drama.
Here’s an easy peasy solution for those that keep responding to her...stop responding to her, learn to ignore, move on and keep it consistent. Because if people think she loves drama and then by someone constantly responding to her, it just shows that person loves drama and too.

She's a cancer on the board. Even when she's ignored, she doesn't stop because she's a head case. The boards are better off without her here. Good riddance.
