I started to watch it again this morning because I missed parts and wanted to pay attention to other details - but what really upset me was the couple who Diane basically was running off the road - who stopped at the rest stop with her. I know we can't do what if's -- but if only they confronted her maybe they would have realized something was really off. I know they probably beat themselves up over that everyday. What a terrible situation to be in. Chat Icon

That is exactly what I thought after watching it. What a horrible thing to live with too, the fact that they DIDN'T do something.

Hindsight is 20 20. Honestly, you dont know who you're approaching. Even though she was a woman, they didnt know who was in the car with her. They didnt see the kids. They werent definite if she got sick or not..I cant say that I would approach someone who almost just ran me off the road..man or woman. I felt bad for that couple..of course they are thinking "We should have" or "We could have" but honestly, I dont blame them for not getting involved.

Oh I know, I never would have confronted a crazy person like that - but you can see that it kills them that they didn't do something. There is nothing they could have done, no one knew what was going to happen.

Did anyone read the essay Jackie Hance wrote in Ladies Home Journal this month? This is the first time she is talking publicly about this horrible tragedy. Here is the link for anyone who didn't see it.

I agree!

This really stood out to me:

I sometimes thought all I wanted was a moment of silence. Now the silence tortures me.

How often do Mom's wish for some quiet time? We shouldn't take even the worst temper tantrums for granted.

I think it's really weird that their pages aren't private. Given their public profile, you'd think they'd lock it down. Chat Icon

Pot was in her system 15 minutes to an hour before accident..

I think she pulled over after paying toll to smoke pot tried to dial out a few phone calls *2 wrong numbers were dialed* and forgot her phone there...

She told her brother she wasnt feeling well- all she had to do was pull over, turn the ignition off and wait.. if she wanted alcohol to fix her pain..she could of been parked and drank..she didnt need to drive.. She is responsible for the deaths of all those people..end of story..and her husband is in denial.. cause i can guarantee he smoked pot and drank with her... One minute they were saying she never drank or smoked..the next they were saying..that she would smoke pot once in a while..please.. And her husband needs to get a grip and start being a better father!! IMO

I too believe that something happened to make Diane extremely mad that day. I don't see Danny asking for a divorce because he had it made. Diane did everything and allowed him to continue acting like a child (as his own mother stated in the documentary).

Was Danny having an affair? Is that where he was Thursday night when he was supposed to be at the campsite? Did Diane find out? Who did Diane speak to the night before for 9 minutes? It's never been reveals who she was talking to. That could be a clue.

Was Diane fed up w/ Danny's refusal to grow up and act responsibly? Did Diane ask for a divorce? The reason I ask the last is because, the day of the accident, Diane's voice mail said "Diane Hance" not Schuler. Did she change that at McDonald's that morning? Was that some hint she left just for Danny?

Re: "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane"

On a serious note though...if she was drinking the night before and hungover...then had to wake up from sleeping in a camper-hungover to pack up 5 kids...she probably smoked some weed that AM.
Def a closet drinker-some of the nicest people are walking the earth with DUI convictions.
I think she took a few gulps from the bottle...kids driving her crazy, stopped smoked more...did not realize how wasted she was and drank more....

She is the person to blame in all this. He is to blame if he knew she was using before leaving camp.

I watched it last night. I'm sorry if some of the things I'm going to say have been said already, I tried to read through all of the comments, but I might have missed something.
First- I think it's insane that they showed her dead body. How could her husband allow that? He's trying to protect her memory by fighting the toxicology reports, yet the last image people have of her is lying dead on the ground?
Second- The dynamic of the husband and the SIL relationship, to me, is very bizarre. I can't put my finger on it, but it strikes me funny.
And a question?- Did anyone interview the clerk at the gas station to see what she went in and asked for?

It was totally disrespectful and unnecessary!! We all know Bryan will see that some day. My heart breaks for that child. I hope he never seeks out the documentary; but, he probably will when he is older ... or a friend will show it to him.Chat Icon

I too think the relationship between Danny and his brother's wife Jay is strange. Although, I am very glad that she is there for Bryan. I sincerely hope she will stick around and make sure Bryan continues therapy and anything else he may need. Chat Icon

I have serious concerns that Danny cares enough to ensure Bryan gets everything he needs ... w/ how busy he is and how hard he finds it is to be a single parent to a child he never wanted. I pray every night that Danny will wise up and see the miracle, Bryan, that God kept in his life through this tragedy.

The clerk refused to speak to the police (per police report). Danny's PI, Ruskin, said he spoke w/ him and that he said she was looking for OTC painkillers (Tylenol / Advil) and that they didn't have any. That seems very odd to me. I've never been in a store like that that didn't at least have small 2 pill packs.

On another note: This is part of the reason people are so angry w/ Daniel Schuler.

I'm surprised at the lack of empathy/sympathy for Diane Schuler. No matter what was going on with her, she is the one that killed people.

Her husband did not.

I think his SIL is trying to play armchair detective - as she said she was obsessed with TV shows & now she feels like she's living in one. They're acting like it was a whodunit when the answer is staring them in the face - Diane Schuler.

As for how disrespectful it was to show the photos of Diane at the scene, I agree it was. Why are people thinking her husband was the one who agreed to have it shown? The photos look like they were taken by the first responders (not talking EMT, who were respectful enough to put the sheets up). The one who took the picture of her is the owner of the photo.

Barb I was thing that the crime scene investigators, forensic people etc, took the photos. They were awful. They're burned in my brain. I keep seeing her walking into the convenience store and a few hrs later, those pictures.

Re: "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane"

I just watched it yesterday. I'm so glad I started reading this thread b/c I was aware that they would show her body. Horrific!
I am curious what the SIL's relationship was like before this tragedy. I know she was the godmother to their little girl and now helps care for the little boy but it's just so strange to me that SHE is the one who is by his side for everything. What about his brother? Chat Icon I mean, she was there for just about every interview and appearance he made but the brother wasn't.
All I can think about is the description some of the witnesses gave about seeing her driving at them on the highway. How she never slowed down, swerved or even budged as she approached cars head on.
Considering that Diane's brother and SIL were not apart of the documentary, I'd say that the saddest part for me was hearing the details of the accident from those two men who were first on the scene. How they broke down when they saw the kids and removed them from the car. They must relive it each time they close their eyes. Chat Icon

Re: "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane"

I watched it last week and I literally was scratching my head by the end at her DH. I mean really, can you say DENIAL!!!! How can numerous toxicology reports be wrong. Ultimately, what does it even matter what she was going through. He is SO concerned with finding some reason WHY but ultimately all you can really say in the end is she drank, she was high, and she killed 8 people. End of story!

I don't care if it was a tooth that was bothering her or if she was stressed, she drank and got high and got behind the wheel. That is BEYOND irresponsible. How he can have a nice word to say about his wife stuns me. IMO, what she did that day negates anything else good she may have ever done in her life. And let's be honest, he goes on and on about how she RARELY ever had a drink and yet she had TEN drinks in her system at the time of the accident. TEN!!!!! Are you kidding me? I RARELY drink, and I do mean RARELY if ever, and as someone who RARELY drinks if I had more than 2 drinks in me I'd probably hit the floor because my body isn't use to drinking. Someone who has TEN drinks in their system along with pot and is still able to at least get in the car and drive and stay awake is NOT someone who RARELY drinks. That woman clearly was an avid drinker and user of pot on a regular basis.

It angered me SO much the way her DH was continually looking for 18 other reasons why this happened. It's so simple, she was clearly a drinker and a pot user and she clearly had NO regard for herself or the children in her care that day. She drank, she got high, and she got in the car and drove. She's despicable and I have not one shred on sympathy for her. My heart just aches for all those people who lost their loved ones that day because of this woman. It's just disgusting and disrespectful of the DH to keep trying to shift the blame off his wife, there is NOBODY else at fault except Diane that day. Shame on him for trying to convince us otherwise.

Re: "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane"

I finally caught this the other night.

My impression of Daniel and Jay and their 'denial' is that it's more about clearing their names than clearing Diane's. Because once they admit they knew she drank/smoke, they are also liable for what happened.

I also feel Daniel is a real POS. Not once did he express sadness over the loss of his daughter or his wife or his 3 nieces or what his son has gone through. He was more upset with Diane for leaving him as a single parent (when he didn't want to be a parent in the first place). P. O. S.

How he can have a nice word to say about his wife stuns me.

I imagine being in his shoes. I think about my DH and how he would react if this had happened to us. Imagine if you TRULY believe your DH or DW could never do something like this. All I know is that my DH would move heaven and earth to come up with some sort of logical reason for what happened. So I can't be mad at the DH for saying kind things about Diane.

Posted by Hofstra26
It angered me SO much the way her DH was continually looking for 18 other reasons why this happened.

I have had conversations with my DH about this. He tells me that something like this would be so out of character for me if this happened to our family. He wouldn't care how it looked, he would not rest until he found some reasonable explanation why I had all that alcohol in my system. Maybe he would want to be able to prove that I went crazy at that moment and downed the bottle and smoked pot. I don't know, all I know is that he would not stop until he could figure it out. Although, I will say it concerns me that there was a bottle of vodka close enough for her to drink it while driving children. If there was some sort of other explanation (which I'm not saying there is), if the alcohol hadn't been in the car, the story of Diane Schuler would not be where it is today.

I will say that there is something that just doesn't sit right about the husband. How can he be so completely unemotional when he talks of what happened that day? If that were my DH, there would be no way to stop him from hysterically crying when he talked about it.

I also went back and watched the beginning because I missed the first 15 minutes the first time I saw it. The interviewer asked him about Diana's mother and how she left her when she was a child. He actually said that he really didn't know that much about it. Diane really didn't talk about it. I find it odd that here she is his wife, they have been together for years and years, and he doesn't know the story about her mother? Could that be an indication that he really didn't KNOW his wife fully? Just a thought I had. And maybe those of you with traumatic things from childhood can tell me if it's something you never fully reveal to even your spouse. To me, it just seemed strange for him to say he really didn't know, she never talked about it.

Even if the family thinks that there were some kind of medical problem that caused Diane to chug a bottle of vodka and smoke pot without knowing what she was doing, I think it would help if they came out and acknowledged that she had the alcohol and pot in her system. Instead of trying to say the autopsy reports were wrong, come to terms with the fact that she had that in her system and let people know that they still believe something she was not in control of led her to drink and smoke. At least then it would feel like they have a better sense of reality.

But honestly, this story is so tragic for everyone involved that I can't imagine what it would do to me if I were involved. The family is grasping at straws and I imagine I would do the same. Chat Icon SO many families were destroyed that day. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
