Name question-is this a
No. It's a biblical name, and it happens to be in the old testament, but it's not necessarily a Jewish name. (I live in the South now where there are no Jews and believe me, there are tons of Sara(h)s.)

Name question-is this a
I don't know any Sara(h)'s who are Jewish. It has a Hebrew origin but not necessarily Jewish.

Re: Name question-is this a "religious" name?
Well, it's a Hebrew name and traditionally Jewish. But, so is the name Joseph and that is a popular Italian name. I know many non-Jews named Sarah.

Re: Name question-is this a "religious" name?
It's biblical, and it appears in the Old Testament. Every Jewish family has a Sara/Sarah in there somewhere, but lots of other groups use the name also. FWIW, I've had students that were black, Latino, and Asian also named Sarah.

honestly, in my opinion when I hear it, yes. Its old testiment which to me reminds me of "jewish" names. Adam, Rachel, Sarah, Joshua, Daniel, Eli, Issac, Jacob, Rebecca etc.

Re: Name question-is this a "religious" name?
I do think it's a name that a lot of Jewish people like to use (I have tons of friends with kids named Sara/Sarah)... and it has Jewish/biblical roots...
But I don't think it's a name used exclusively by Jewish people. Think of all the famous Sara/Sarah's out there...
Sarah Ferguson Sarah Jessica Parker Sarah Palin
I think when it's spelled "Sarah" vs "Sara" it's more Jewish and classic. Sara is more modern. To me, it's in the same line as Jacob and Daniel which are one of the most popular names in the U.S.A. now and that polls everyone.

Shannon - typically you think Irish, right?
There are Shannon's of many races/ethnicitys. All names originate somewhere.

Name question-is this a
I think it depends on where you live. I guess on LI, people will think it's a Jewish name. Leave NY and no one thinks twice about it unless you name your kid Israel or something. This is obviously a NY-centric forum, though, so it makes sense to see that some people feel this way. Maybe ask the people close to you how they feel about it if it's something that concerns you.
(Edited to take out the little mini rant about what a judgmental b* my mom is.)

I'm a Sarah and I'm not Jewish. My mom named me Sarah because she liked the name.
She claims she started the trend because Sarah was the most popular name for a few years.

This is a great point that I didn't even consider.. maybe its a NY centric thing. no worries about the rant..
I think it's a beautiful name I just don't want a name associated to a relisgion or group.. of any kind. I just like the name

That's interesting b/c Daniel is my brother's name and we are a redheaded Irish family.
I guess it really doesnt matter.
