This is a first grade lesson i will be teaching in bout 2 weeks It is also a standard for first grade.
Imo this is not developmentally appropriate for 6 yr olds

actually, after seeing it on paper it doesn't bother me as much. it sounds complicated in wording but in reality it's teaching them to simplify their math by breaking it down. Please update us and let us know how your students respond to the lesson plan...I'm curious since eventually my son will be learning this way.

Ok apparently 1st graders are smarter than me because I still don't understand the question!
Me either... Math was not my strong subject in school... I am so screwed when DS starts school... Why not just keep things the way they were. What is wrong with basic math?

Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem
You should see fourth grade math. It's killing me. I kept telling DS to just stack the numbers and multiply them but he said he is supposed to use a "strategy" to solve it, not just figure out the answer. Strategies often involve three or four steps.
DS has trouble with maintaining focus, and often after the second step of the process he will make a careless error and get the answer wrong.
You apparently need to know ten different ways to add, subtract, multiply and divide now. Just knowing how to do it is not enough!

Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem
I'm so glad I posted this! I wasn't going to at first I thought I would get flamed for being a paid tutor and not being able to help my student with this I'm glad the other teachers agree that this is insane lol
Eta I wish he'd remember to bring his math book home so I can see exactly how the teacher teaches him this method so I can teach myself to teach him while he's doing other homework. I should get his code so I can access his textbook online

this book is actually My Math but it really doesnt matter since it is common core aligned so its being taught to all first graders and etc...
I really dont want to send my kid to school and Im a teacher. Its insane to teach this to babies. I have a class of 31 students, 20 are ELLs.

i am a high school math teacher and the way this is displayed and shown to first graders is a crime. they are going to grow up hating math!! (more than some of them already do)
edited to add that this is in fact the way i do the math in my head. however when put down on paper and shown to first graders its downright scary.
ITA (and am also a hs math teacher). They are trying to force young kids to think in a certain way. I think most people would do this in their heads too, not because they were taught to but because they figured it out over time. Let the kids count up or count down and eventually find their own method. I hate that they are forcing every kid to "master" every method and write it out this way. It's horrible. Math is about logic, not memorizing a bunch a steps like this.

Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem
Maybe this is why so many other countries are ahead of us in Math/Science. WTF is this???
Why can't we just teach Math the way it has been taught for years and then when they get that maybe move on to teach kids somepractical math skills that they will use in the real world... compound interest, how down payments impact loans over time and such...
I recently ran into my HS Calc teacher and told him I still don't understand why I had to learn all that as I still have never used it!

Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem
Seriously... I think I need to go back to the 1st grade to learn this math.
My memories of first grade consist of weekly hula hoop contests, putting cloves in oranges, growing a tomato plant & sitting facing the corner because I was a talker.

Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem
It is sad, there is little time for fun (crafts etc) in first grade.
In math students are also responsible for a lot of vocabulary and we use terms like associative and communative Properties their eads are spinning

My son is in 1st grade and they make 10's boxes. So I think he's learning it as:
26+8=
[10][10][6] + 8
then you fill in the rest of the 10 box that has 6 in it already by adding 4 more, then cross off 4 from the 8
[10][10][6+4] + [8-4] [10][10][10] + [4]
30+4=34
yeah that's what I was suggesting.
Make sense to me. Just the terminology lost me at first, but the concept seems simple enough.

I would think
6+8=14 14+20=34
I thought this.
But it says to break apart ones to make a ten so the 8 is a one so that would become a ten...ones to a ten right?
what does this even mean lol Im so confused.

Wait until you get to the "new division". It's ridiculous the way they are teaching these things. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem
I may be the only parent on the planet who doesn't mind this. Teaching a variety of algorithms allows kids with different learning styles to find ones that work best for them. Robbie liked it so much he started creating his own methods for fun. And Noah actually prefers a more non-traditional method for certain math problems.
