I still eat sugar, (mostly in desserts) but what I started doing years ago, is trying to avoid hidden sugars.

Peanut butter was the one that drove me crazy. So much sugar & you don't even get the satisfaction of eating something sweet. We buy the Stop & Shop natural peanut butter--it took a little getting used to, but it is much peanuttier.

I don't buy things that have HFCs but eat sugar in the form of desserts. I just can't give up desserts.

I try not to touch the stuff. I was treated for breast cancer last year and learned that sugar is NOT my friend. I use honey to sweeten my tea as honey is processed by our bodies more slowly and is not bad for us.

The New York Times Sunday Magazine had a long cover story last year about how dangerous sugar is for us and how it literally causes cancer as it causes inflammation in our bodies. It was a very sobering article.

We don't allow HFC's - it was tough at first, checking every label, but now we pretty much know what our go-to's are. We stock up on sauces, etc at Trader Joes so we don't have to worry.

On sugar, for me, it helped to retrain my tastebuds. I was putting a lot of sugar in my coffee every morning so I just started cutting back little by little. Now I drink it black. Other things that contain sugar - even natural sugar - like juice, I started watering down. I know drink juice with an 80% water to juice ratio - it's basically like lightly flavored water. This helped me not crave sweet as much. Look at things that contain a lot of sugar and try to cut back - switch to plain yogurt for example.

Now, when I taste some sweet things, I don't even like them anymore. I never understood "too sweet" before I started doing all this but now I do.

It's exciting to see all the amazing replies!!!! I'm sure 5-10 years ago this thread may have been totally different!

Before reading Skinny B!itch about 5 years ago now, I was eating anything and everything in front of me. I was never obese but i'd say curvy(?). I read the book on a dare from a gf who read it and said you'll never touch meat again. 'Ha!' I said, gimme that book. She was right.

They also discuss artificial sweeteners and refined sugar.

Agree with pp about Trader's, we do our weekly shopping there and I have stopped buying any frozen food. We cook everything (or easily heat up a whole wheat wrap with lentils, onion, jalapeno, hummus). I mean it takes 3 minutes.

For sweets we eat fruit.

Eta: i've lost and kept off 20lbs since reading that book. Losing weight was never my intention but a happy side effect!

We're not big on sugar in our house to begin with (I think salt is a bigger vice for me) but we definitely check our labels more than we did a few years ago, especially with DS. We try to avoid HFCS as much as possible. I would love to get to the point where it's gone altogether, so we're working on that.

I started making little changes to my diet a few years ago-I don't put sugar in my coffee, brown rice instead of white, etc. and that along with exercise helped me to lose 40 lbs. (I gained 50 with my pregnancy and lost all but 15, so I'm still a work in progress). I have been going to Trader Joe's about once a month, but I wish it was closer!

I keep sugar under 35 grams a day and no white sugar. HFCS is pretty much banned in my home, but I allow DS to have an occasional treat with it in it....

I certainly don't have enough willpower for anything like that! If it tastes good, I eat it! Chat Icon

Yeah. Pretty much same here. Also I rarely buy anything that doesn't have a coupon/isn't on sale regardless of the ingredients. Probably not the best thing but it is what it is.

My dr once told me that he believes there is a direct link between obesity and HFCS. He said one tablespoon is like eating 1000 ears of corn.

Been avoiding HFCS for years. That and food coloring. Absolutely terrible for you.

Easiest way for me to avoid hfcs is to buy nothing process. The few items I do buy processed are low processed (less than 5 ingredients) and organic.

I hear ya on the coupons/sales as well
Amazingly my physical and blood work results were so good that they put me into a prefered category on my life insurance- and sent me a refund check for the difference of what I paid vs the new lower rate for being in the super preferred health category.

I don't check labels and eat whatever, but I am in 100% agreement that HFCS is bad for us.

I think that is the main reason why years ago people ate sweets and baked goods without the obesity epidemic we have today.

Ditto

I also think portion control has gotten out of hand at restaurants and stuff.

It's like we have been conditioned to want to eat more, eat worse, and eat more fast and on-the-go.

I always say.. I wish there was a healthy drive thru. I bet it would catch on. Healthy food at a great price and convenient.

Unfortunately, one thing doesn't have
All that much to do
With the other these days. The impact of gmo's and non organic foods on our bodies likely wouldn't show up on a physical until its too late :(

I do my best to avoid these things in my daily life for my family and especially my kids. Sadly, it's really almost impossible these days to completely avoid
Without making your kids feel like the freaks of the week lol. I'm hopeful that as our country becomes more and more aware of the damage we are doing these things will be gone or at least we will have more healthy easy options in our daily lives. I see improvements constantly in the offerings for foods with only organic non-gmo sugars!

I buy a lot of fruit and fruit strips (dried fruit leather)

I keep them all in basket on table and they can snack all they want from that healthy basket.

One child loves ketchup. Goes on everything I buy the one with no HFC

Besides fruits, veggies and cheese etc... All snacks in my house are Annie's brand, earths best or 365 brand... They don't have HFCs, are mostly organic and don't contain gmo's, for drinks I do water or the honest kids juices.
