Do you drink at kid events/parties?

Is it common for adults to drink at kid events or parties? I admit I very rarely drink so maybe that is why I'm surprised by how often I've seen adults drinking in front of their children. I have been to 3 parties in the past few weekends at peoples home where alcohol has been offered for the adults. When we went trick or treating people were walking around with coolers drinking. Ive been invited out with other moms from my daughters school and its always to a bar restaurant where the adults order a drink. Maybe I'm behind the times but I just don't feel like its appropriate. The one thing that bothers me is that these parents have to drive their kids home from these events. I haven't seen anyone drink in excess its usually one drink and I don't think they are drunk driving home but for me I would never even sip alcohol and drive with my kids.

Really? You'd never go out to dinner with your family have a drink and drive home?

I see nothing wrong with demonstrating to children that adults can responsibly consume alcohol. It's not like your talking about brings drinking and shots. I want my son to understand that alcohol is for adults, And should be consumed in moderation. And observing others doing that demonstRates that.

Pounding back tequila shots and rum & cokes? No of course not. But a glass or two of wine or a couple of beers? Absolutely. When I am not PG I always order a glass of wine when we are out to dinner.

I am with my daughter almost all the time. If I didn't drink in front of her I would never drink.
It's not lines of coke...it's a few glasses of wine. I don't see how that could be inappropriate.

I can't imagine being out to dinner and NOT having a glass of wine. For me it's part of the experience.

And as far as drinking at a kid's party, if they are offering it, HELL yeah. It's the only thing that makes a kid's bday party a little more bearable! Unfortunately most kid bday parties are at venues where alcohol is not served. But the best kiddie party was the one where they had it in the clubhouse of their condo complex with entertainment for the kids and wine for the adults. That was MUCH appreciated!

This! I always get a beer or a mixed drink when we are out to dinner. DH usually drives wherever we go and he usually has a beer or 2. Neither of us are even remotely buzzed and our kids know that they are adult drinks.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?

When my kids were younger, I rarely drank. We didn't go out as much with friends and I don't remember ordering that many drinks at restaurants.

I personally don't get the drinking and Toting thing as I saw it a few years ago and couldn't get why these parents couldn't wait until after to have a drink.

My kids are older now and I drink but I know my limits so I don't have a hangover the next day and my dh will rarely drink if we go out and if he does, he never drives home close to when he was drinking.

If you have to drink when your kids are young, watch out as it gets worse as they older Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?

I'm not saying we never drink in front of our kids. We most cerntrainlty have. I'm also not saying that I don't think parents can drink responsibly in front of their kids. But when the event is for kids like a birthday party for kids or trick or treating I don't think it's appropriate or is really needed. I just seems like adults can't or don't want to attend something for the kids without it including alcohol.

ETA: I will say growing up I never remember going to kids birthday party and the adults drinking and never went trick or treating with my parents or any of my friends parents drinking. I also want to add this isn't family events these are invited through school.

Yes Dh and I will have drinks in front of our kids out at dinner. I personally wouldn't drink and than drive but I do think people can drink responsibly in front of their kids. I was referring more to moms setting up an outting during the day with just moms and their kids and ordering drinks.

I agree with this 100%. I'm also with my kids all of the time and I'm still a person too. If I'm spending 3 or 4 hours at a party I don't see anything wrong with having a glass of wine. I think it would be totally inappropriate to drink excessively or get drunk, but a glass or two is fine.

I do.
Not excessively.

And I do get what you are saying... My child should not think of me holding alcohol all the time... So I limit it to parties and special dinners.

We have cut down drinking after kids.

Depends how well I knew the other moms I think. At birthday parties for the other kids in town I've known since dd was a baby and see often, I've definitely had a drink at their backyard birthday parties. We have a party next week for a school friend where I don't know them at all and even though it's a backyard party I probably wouldn't have a drink if offered. During the day taking the kids out to lunch or something I wouldn't be one to order a drink and can't think of a time I've seen another mom do it.

I don't think alcohol is an illicit substance. Honestly when I see what some people eat in front of their children, or with their children, it may inwardly raise my eyebrows but I am far enough into the mom game that I try to never judge another family. Personally, I have a child with special needs, and one drink takes the edge off of social gatherings which can be incredibly difficult for my special guy. If someone wants to judge me for responsibly consuming a legal substance that actually has demonstrated health benefits, they can go ahead. I have better things to do. Like drinking!

Eta- I'm not referring specifically to OP, but I think a lot of this is just the typical judgment that kicks in whenever we see a mom doing something a mom isn't "supposed" to do - drinking, working, having fun, wearing a bikini, leaving her kids with a sitter while she goes to the gym, gets a mani. Etc. there seems to be this persistent idea that being a mom is all self sacrifice.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?

Not at a kids event per se, but at a family event (4th of July BBQ, nice dinner with family, even a first bday that's more of a family event than kiddie party ), yes I will have a hard cider or glass of wine. Usually just one, but yes I will have. As far as drinking at events geared for kids (trick or treating, kiddie party), that's ridiculous.

Yes, I drink whenever there is alcohol at a party. And with our circle of friends, there's pretty much always a cooler of beer at a kids party. And I also drank while TOTing. All of the people I was with had to-go cups and we sa tons of other parents with red solo cups. I honestly don't see the problem.

I don't do it now since I'm pregnant but I will absolutely have a glass of wine or two in front of my kids at dinner or a party. If a kids party was serving wine and I was in the mood, I'd have a glass. I do find the TOT drinking a little weird. I wouldn't do it personally but I don't think it's awful.

Um yes. We always have alcohol available as do all my friends and family unless it's at a kids place of.course, like a chuck e cheese. After 4pm on halloween a the adults were walking around with beers. Didn't think anything of it.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?

I will have a drink in front of my kids but they are young a little of 2 and 6 months. I did not drink while trick or treating because my 2 year old needed me but if they were older and I was there just to supervise not really be as hands on as I am now I would love a to go cup with wine :) Growing up my parents never drank and really still don'the but having a drink here and there even at kids parties where it is offered is not a big deal to me.

Not even kidding, EVERYONE is always having a drink...........even with kids around. Playdates at my friends houses over the summer they were serving margaritas, everyone had a drink in hand as we trick or treated, bday parties at the house........drinking. I don't think it's uncommon at all, adults drink when hanging out in groups. I find nothing inappropriate about it as long as nobody is sloppy drunk and there are designated drivers.

I don't get the TOTing and drinking, honestly. Why can't a bunch of parents with kids go for an hour without hauling around drinks?

Isn't it illegal to walk around with an open alcoholic beverage?
