Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?
I grew up with my parents having a glass or two during dinner each night. They also had it at family/friend's parties and when we went out to dinner. My parents enjoyed it and I loved how they got to enjoy themselves going out some weekends. DH and I are the same way. We will have some drinks during the week. Especially in the summer. At parties at a house alcohol is always served. We had a family/friend party for DS's last bday. I only invited two friends from school, but I know these moms well and we go out together drinking or have done dinners dates with our DH's. I have also done bday parties at a kid place. Of course there's no alcohol served there, but will invite some close friends and family back to the house for some snacks and drinks for the adults and the kids play. My kids are used to it. They know those drinks are for adults. We are always responsible. We don't get wasted, but it's nice to enjoy a drink with friends. I did not drink while ToT, but went back to a friend's after where the kids played and we drank. I see nothing wrong with it. If the adults are responsible why aren't they allowed to have fun. When we became adults and/or had kids doesn't mean you don't get to have fun and do stuff for yourself. My kids see us happy, laughing and having a good time and they do as well.

Yes, I drink whenever there is alcohol at a party. And with our circle of friends, there's pretty much always a cooler of beer at a kids party. And I also drank while TOTing. All of the people I was with had to-go cups and we sa tons of other parents with red solo cups. I honestly don't see the problem.
I don't get the TOTing and drinking, honestly. Why can't a bunch of parents with kids go for an hour without hauling around drinks?
Isn't it illegal to walk around with an open alcoholic beverage?
crashing, I agree, I dont see the need to walk around drinking. I also don't remember my mother and her friends ever drinking when they were spending the afternoon as a group w kids.
I might be living under a rock as one poster stated bc I am not a drinker and would find it odd as well.
Big difference having a drink at a dinner/BBQ then walking around drinking imo
I wanted to add, the size of one glass/cup of wine leads people to believe they are only drinking 1-2, but those drinks usually equal 3-4. Solo cups have lines on them for a reason and each line represents an amount.
realistically, people are drinking a lot more than they think
Because it's not a few moms wandering together for an hour. It mostly comes up when Halloween falls on a weekend like this year. We were out for hours WITH all the men too and everyone was just hanging out and having fun while TOT'ing and some of us had a drink. NOBODY, not even one person, was drunk in the least.
Just to even further show you how it's NOT uncommon, a home in the neighborhood sets up a whole haunted house for the kids and they were serving spiked warmed cider for EVERY adult that came by. EVERYONE was hanging out there having a drink. We're adults, drinking is completely normal in most situations within limits. Getting $hitfaced is one thing, enjoying a drink with friends in a social situation is just no big deal IMO whether that be a party, TOT'ing, etc.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?
I have drank at friends kids parties, but it's rare in our group of friends since it's usually done at bounce places/trampoline places etc. But we drink if we go out to dinner, we will alternate between who drives/who drinks Bc I'll never get behind a wheel or allow my kids in a car with someone who was drinking. We do drink beer/wine at home, but just to relax, not to be drunk. I honestly don't think my almost 7 year old even knows what we are drinking, my kids don't drink soda so they just assume that's what we are drinking. I tend to cringe when I hear 5 year olds telling me there moms love wine and dads love beer, I'm not sure why that's so hilarious to people, and I'm not sure how that comes up in conversation with small kids. But I'm very conservative, so I'm not judging others, I just don't want my own kids speaking like that.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?
I'm not sneaking a cooler to my son's 2 hour Bounce U birthday party (although it would be AWESOME to have an adults only Bounce U party and have the coolers ..... ) But I've never been to a party where the adults were also included and there wasn't alcohol served.
A 2 hour pizza and cake kind of party for the kids - No, I wouldn't expect to be offered a drink ( I wouldn't refuse it, if offered, but I wouldn't expect it)
but for something like a BBQ or Pool Party or, like I just did a Halloween Party ....it's not JUST about the kids, so I'd be surprised if there wasn't alcohol there.
No one (at least noone in my circle) is getting raging drunk with their kids in tow and then hopping in the car to drive them home - I think it's good a good example for kids to see their parents go to a party, to dinner etc and have 1 or 2 drinks and then stop - knwoing they have to drive, or that there's no need to drink to excess etc.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?
I am not a big drinker at all. My tolerance for alcohol has gone way down as I've gotten older so I generally only have a drink when DH and I go out to dinner. With that being said, I don't see a problem with having a drink at a kid's event. I'm not talking about getting sloppy drunk, but a glass or two of wine or beer seems fine to me.

Do you drink at kid events/parties?
At a location party - like a 2 hour bounce party or whatever, no I have never seen anyone drinking. They already charge an arm and leg at those places.
If its a party at a house where there is no rush to leave than yes, I will have a drink or two (I'll only have two if we are planning on staying long, otherwise, I limit myself to one since I have to drive).
I certainly don't think parents should be doing shots or pounding them back like they are out for the night.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?
I have had a glass of sangria or wine when we go to the farm fruit picking. To me one glass is absolutely fine if you are staying there for a few hours and walking it off. It would not be fine if you drink and then two minutes later drive away. It is about context and being responsible. Showing your kids that occasionally having one glass of wine in a social setting, without getting drunk, and driving away is responsible parenting. The problem becomes when you drink and leave a minute later or don't have a designated driver.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?
I'll maybe have a glass of wine at a group dinner or family party but I don't think I would drink while TOTing or at a kid's party. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, it's just not for me.
In general I feel like I am a little hyper sensitive to drinking around my kids. Alcoholism runs rampant in my family so many of my earliest memories involve one family member or the other getting fall down drunk and scaring/embarrassing me. Obviously that's not what we are talking about in this instance but I think those moments make me less inclined to drink in their presence.

I have only been to 1 kids party that had beer served (at a home). I would have had 1 but didn't notice until the party was almost over. I don't see anything wrong with it, I see it as a social thing.

I agree with this. There were 10 adults and 9 kids TOT'ing this year with us and all of the adults with the exception of one had a beer or glass of sangria in their hands while TOT'ing. Nobody was drunk but we were all hanging out having a good time while taking the kids TOT'ing.

I wanted to do it for mine or DH's birthday but all the adults we would use as a babysitter would be at the party, lol! Seriously, that would be so fun!

Yes, I agree, this has become more normal in the last few years, at least IME.
We walked around for many years with other parents and none of them were drinking as they were walking and yes, they ARE drinkers in other social settings.
I enjoy drinking and do, do it around my kids but like I said before, I rarely did it when my kids were younger. I just never found the need and all my friends were parents of young children too. As we have gotten older, and the kids have gotten older, we have done it more often.
If you guys drink BECAUSE of your kids when they are younger, you will probably turn into alcoholics when they are teens.

Re: Do you drink at kid events/parties?
Trick or treating with coolers? Where do you live and are there any houses for sale there? LOL.
All jokes aside...my babies are still young so i have no experience with this but my brother and SIL have been to parties with their kids where alcohol is served. Even at kiddie places. And like someone else said, having a drink at these things makes them tolerable according to my SIL. LOL. Obviously not getting knocked down, black out drunk. A glass of wine or mixed drink or beer is totally fine and I don't find it inappropriate at all if it's being offered.

I am with my daughter almost all the time. If I didn't drink in front of her I would never drink. It's not lines of coke...it's a few glasses of wine. I don't see how that could be inappropriate.
I can't imagine being out to dinner and NOT having a glass of wine. For me it's part of the experience.
And as far as drinking at a kid's party, if they are offering it, HELL yeah. It's the only thing that makes a kid's bday party a little more bearable! Unfortunately most kid bday parties are at venues where alcohol is not served. But the best kiddie party was the one where they had it in the clubhouse of their condo complex with entertainment for the kids and wine for the adults. That was MUCH appreciated!
this
when we had our son's party at our house we had beer and wine.
My friends and I were walking around trick or treating and drinking a beer while doing so. I get that people may find this tacky or whatever and that is fine, those aren't people I would want to hang out with anyway I like to have a good time, I don't drink and drive my kids, I don't get white girl wasted, I have a glass of wine w friends and we enjoy ourselves, if others don't like it don't come over lol

Yeah this is basically where I fall on it also.
I have friends and family who drink a lot and friends and family who barely drink or not at all.
My parents are in the basically NOT at all file.
My brother and sister -- well, my brother not at all, never really did. And my sister socially, very little.
And then extended members who do a lot and then friends that are all over the map. I don't really care what anyone else does as long as they don't endanger the safety of others.
And OP - I did not think you were "under a rock" for posting this or wondering this AT ALL. I too had a raised eyebrow or two when I first saw parents drinking while their kids TOTed -- my first time seeing this was last year. And this is something that is relatively new to the scene. This is not something I saw or friends of mine saw growing up. I'm not saying that it's wrong for them -- whatever they want to do, is fine, but you are not off base for kind of noticing it and going, oh wow. That's all.
Good post and I think it was a good thread and something for people to talk about and give differing opinions on.

The drinking while TOT is odd to me - just because its against the law to have open containers. So I wouldn't do that.
