Trump's performance (or lack thereof) made me immediately think of the quote from Billy Madison. Just sub in the intro with "Mr. Trump"........

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. Chat Icon Chat Icon

One thing that did really irk me was Hillary touting her website and book. The debate isn't an infomercial.

I did find both of those relevant though- she has laid out her ideas and plans in a book. Trump was worse IMO- how many times did he plug his properties? DC, Chicago, Florida? I lost track.

I too am not a huge Hillary supporter, but am going to vote for her. And prior to last night I did not find him at all qualified. If anything, his performance underscored my belief that he could not handle the job.

And he almost admitted he paid no federal tax in the past- and that made him "smart" in his own words. If you support him, I want to know how that makes you feel? He's allegedly a billionaire who didn't pay federal tax while you likely bust your butt and pay your fair share. That pissed me off.

He didn't pay income tax because the current tax codes benefit the wealthy. Unfortunately the way things are $0 is what the irs says is his share. He is not alone. This is one of the biggest thing that needs to change.

But to essentially brag that you're so smart that you don't pay taxes really pi$$es off your average American who busts their a$$ just to get buy, paying taxes through the nose all while some rich d!ck isn't paying a cent. Trump, and wealthy people like him, are a burden to the rest of hard working Americans so regardless of the actual tax codes, it was a completely stupid, smug comment to make. He basically insinuated that the rest of us who are doing the RIGHT thing by paying our taxes are stupid. He's not smart, he's cheating and taking advantage of the system................and he claims he's better than HRC. Oh, ok. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Agreed.

Perhaps he technically followed the rules but what kind of advocate would he be for the middle class and the poor if he is a cheerleader for these loopholes?

And hardworking, honest people think he's their champion?

The point is that he is NOT cheating the system. What he is doing is completely within the confines of a very broken system. He is pointing that out. It does make him smart and it makes the people that designed the system not smart. Perhaps if you were an accountant and more versed in the tax code for the wealthy you would understand how broken the system really is. But to just say he is "cheating" because he isn't paying taxes is entirely inaccurate. He is not doing anything illegal.

The Debate

Something that has been said multiple times on this thread is bothering the heck out of me.

For everyone who is saying that HRC was scripted, rehearsed, robotic...why is that a bad thing?

I'd love for her to be more relaxed, but she has said many times that she is not a good public speaker, so she does the work necessary to make up for it with good answers.

Do you not want a President who studies issues, rehearses what they say and has answers to the questions asked of them? I can't fathom how some people are twisting her preparedness into a negative.

Granted, I think Trump is a human garbage pile, but if he had taken one second to practice for this debate, I might have found a shred of respect for him.

If he doesn't take the debates serious enough to practice and come off like he has half a clue how our government and laws work, what do you think he is going to do as President?

How do you KNOW that he is not doing anything illegal??? If he won't release his tax returns it's only his word, (which IMO is worth nothing), about how much he is worth, his income AND that his returns are done within the confines of the law. Let's be honest, you can't really think if elected he will do ANYTHING to fix these tax codes or loopholes. That will cost him money and GASP!!.............he'll actually have to pay taxes like the rest of us. I don't think he said it to point out a broken system, he said it to be a smug a$$hole and no average American citizen should think for one second that he would "fix the system" because it wouldn't be in HIS best financial interest.

He has been audited every year for the past 13 years. If he was doing something illegal he would have been caught by now. I don't think he isn't releasing his returns because there is something illegal, it's probably just because he doesn't make as much as he claims he makes.

Why do I care about his tax returns? Because that is the only way Trump can support all of his claims of wealth and that he makes good business decisions. Hillary has a public record that goes back for decades - and whether you like her policies or not, they are out there for the world to see. Trump doesn't not have any such record. He argues that because he is such a great business man, he would be good at running this country. What is the most basic proof of how good a business man he really is? His tax returns - which he refuses to let anyone see. So IMO, he is hiding the one thing that could support his claims. Given what I've seen of his personality, if his returns proved how "great" he is, he would have released them without anyone even asking

To be honest, you will not understand almost any of his return at all unless you are a CPA who specializes in taxes. So what you will get is the media interpretation of his tax return. You will get a lot less information than you think. If you want his business record you would be better off seeing audited financial statements of his corporations which would be much easier to understand. But you really are not going to get what you are looking for from his personal tax returns.

Oh right, you mean how he's created thousands of jobs for people he NEVER pays??? That's so helpful to our economy!!! Or how he doesn't settle any of his debts?? She comes off as too fake, fabricated and rehearsed. Every response sounds like it's from a Miss USA pageant interview.

I read somewhere that she was coached

Is this a surprise though? All politicians are.

That being said, and I do NOT love HRC, being rehearsed, answering the questions, and remaining calm plays so much better than a rambling, misinformed hothead.

Exactly. Who gives a $h*t if she was "coached"?

Being President is a big job. Why do we want someone who is not prepared? Oh that's right- he speaks his mind and says what people are thinking. Just the type of person we need for President. Chat Icon

That's how I feel. I 'd rather someone who is coached, trained, and prepared for the job.

We do NOT need a leader who runs off at the mouth, says whatever he wants however he wants, slings insults around, and can't even conduct himself with a modicum of maturity. Truly, he sounded like a little kid constantly butting into an adult conversation so he could just talk about himself and his mindless ramblings. That isn't the type of person who should be leading a country.

Ok then. To be fair, why do we care about his tax returns?

How come we don't care about the 33k emails that were suddenly deleted once asked to turn them over? ?
Among other reasons (too many to list) why I don't trust HRC.

How can you manage being President, since it's a big job, when you can't even manage a computer??

I'm not sure what your statement/question has to do with what I said about him being a bumbling moron.

I'm also not sure why the ONLY thing Trump supporters seem to care about are these emails. It's like they have NOTHING else to comment on. Ever.

I'm also astounded that anyone can sit back after the debate last night and still think this man is fit to be a President.

It's not just the emails. I said there are too many cons of hers to list. Try Google to look it up. I think there are about 36.

I am not a big fan of Trump but definitely dislike her.

It's also very possible that after each ( or at least some) of the audits, he settled with the IRS and made payments that were actually owed - that Trump's use of all of the loopholes wasn't always justified. Not necessarily criminal penalties, but taxes that were found to be owed. Something we'll never know because he won't release the info.

So what did we learn here? The people on LIF who support Clinton say she did great. The people who love Trump say he was amazing. Those of us (like me) who don't like either candidate think neither of them did that well. It's very true that we all see what we want to see...

No. I am absolutely not a supporter of either Trump or HRC. I think she is a fake, lying, corrupt politician. That said, I could have vomited last night watching that immature, incoherent, idiotic, smug, sexist blowhard up there. He's so smart for paying no taxes? I guess I'm a moron because I pay mine. He made her look pretty darn good last night.

I will not vote for either of them, but if it has to be one or the other, I hope she wins. He's just that bad. And I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but I truly can not fathom how anyone can vote for him.

Maybe I can't fully interpret them, (although I do have some knowledge of tax law) but I find it really arrogant that he thinks he can withhold them and just make unsupported statements about his worth and business sense. And I do have several close family members who are CPA's and wouldn't mind interpreting them. The point is not that "most" people can't understand them (although that statement is highly insulting), it's that he thinks he can just make statements about his wealth and business sense without providing the documents that can most clearly support his claims.

Ummmm not true. It's not just the 33,000 emails. Let's talk about Benghazi, the corrupt Clinton foundation , lying to Congress, just a few to name. As I always said I am not a trump fan but I hate HRC with every part of me.

If he didn't do anything illegal then I don't think it's something you should be concerned with. It is clear that you don't have any kind of background in tax accounting especially when it comes to the wealthy. And the average American would have absolutely no idea what they are looking at. I was a CPA and I would have no idea where to even start with his return. I wouldn't even attempt to do my own tax return and it's a hell of a lot less complicated than his! This isn't a 1040EZ we are talking about.

I am not a fan of either as well but those I know who are die hard Trump supporters are pretty hung up on those emails. It's ALL they reference and comment on. Just my experience this election year.

The fact that he OR any corporation can get away with paying ZERO taxes shows just how broken our system is. Period.

I agree - but this is not his fault. If you want to place blame, it belongs with the politicians. He is not a politician but Hilary is. Maybe you don't like the way he brags about it or is smug but he has nothing to do with creating the tax code.

Only because of your condescension, I have to ask -

You were a CPA but you won't attempt to do your own tax return? Huh?
