Re: SAHMs
My dh works in title insurance. We had to make cuts to make it work. We stopped leasing cars which was a huge savings. We buy cars and than keep them for a few years so we don't always have payments. We only took vacation a year, and ate out less. We have been incredibly lucky that my dh has moved a few times in his industry in the past few years and increased his pay as he went. Also if you haven't ever used a deferment you me able to do it for your student loans. I had to do it when I had back surgery and we had insane amounts of medical bills coming in.

My DH a teacher, owns his own dj company, and teaches zumba 3 days a week. We also have an apartment rental. We struggle some months but we make it work. Also we new from the start I was only staying home for 2 years cause then my mom is retiring and she offered to watch my son. I am soaking up the next 10 months and trying not to stress about the money.

I understand why some are judging those who get help from their parents, but IMO if they can afford it then why not? They $$$ isn't going with them when they die, might as well help take care of their loved ones!
I totally understand that they can't take it with them when they die. So they might as well help out. But I wonder then what that teaches the kids. The money can't last for many generations, so the kids will have to support themselves when they grow up. It will be a shock for them because they didn't even see their parents work!
I am sort of on the fence about this.. my parents have enough money from rental properties etc where they could probably support us enough that I could quit my job -- but that would go against their work ethic and mine as I went to school for many years to have a career and be able to stand on my own two feet. That being said-- sometimes I think it would be nice to be a sahm and live off of that money HOWEVER-- at least in the case with rental properties-- managing them can often be at least a part time job (as we discovered after my dad passed away and we took over the management - but not the income =)) SO i guess my point is your not necessarily teaching your kids not to work and teh money wont necessarily run out if you teach your kids how to manage the money and continue to invest smartly to make more money and see it grow (which also can be hard work- just not the traditional kind). My parents did however take care of all of my student loans inc grad school so that I could have a "clean slate" starting out my life.
To the OP- i really think every circumstance is different as others have explained. I work PT now-- I was laid off while on maternity leave with my DD1 -- I stayed home for about a year (i am a saver by nature and can live super frugally if necessary- i spent zero money other than necessities during that time) I eventually went to work PT and my salary goes mostly towards savings- which then goes to house renovations mostly. If we (DH really) didnt spend a ton of money on house renovations I think i could quit my job! We are house poor for sure, but hopefully not for too long.
