Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?
I just came back from a two week trip in India yesterday and let me tell you, they make our security checks look perfunctory. I was pat down, hand and walk through scanned and whatever I was carrying was scanned EVERY TIME I went into my hotel in Mumbai and every time I was in an airport multiple times.
I have no issues with the scanners. The extra security in India made my husband and I feel very safe and I feel it will do the same for us here.

My view is really about all the people screaming their civil liberties are beign violated. It is not a violation of search and siezure because flying on a plane is not a right.....Constutional Law 101. The exact reason that you can be searched on the subway or train. Its a privlegde to ride the subway.
Umm, excuse me, but it is a violation of the 4th amendment. I quoted the amendment in a spinoff post yesterday.
Here it is again:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
IMHO, it is unreasonable to be "strip searched" by a computer, or be felt up by a technician. Even the Supreme Court in Terry vs Ohio (the seminal stop & frisk case for the non-lawyers) ruled that there has to be a reasonable suspicion before a person could be subject to a pat down.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?
I am NOT ok with naked pictures being taken of me or my 3 small children, NOR am I ok with some strenger basically MOLESTING me and my kids to get on a plane. We will not be flying ANYWHERE until this nonsense is over.
"The government" says that the scanners are "safe" and that the agents doing the "pat downs" are "trained"... this is the SAME government who told a bunch of 9-11 first responders that the air they were breathing was "healthy".... I DO not trust it.
I understand "national security", but, I tell my kids all the time "no one except mommy, daddy, or your doctor is allowed to look at or touch your private areas".... am I now supposed to add "and TSA agents"????
Where does it end? I think this country has gone a bit nuts, and I am just waiting for someone to file a class action lawsuit against the TSA. Honestly, if I HAD TO fly right now, I would be that crazy mom being arrested because the second someone went to BREATHE near my kids, I would be all over them.

My feeling is if you don't like the scan or the pat down then don't fly. Flying on an airline is not a right it is a privilege therefore there are no constitutional rights being violated.
I will continue using my privilege and will continue flying.
in a struggling industry...is that the answer though? won't that result in more layoffs?
there has to be a different way to secure flights then this
might hurt the airline industry but would stimulate other areas if more people are driving then flying. and truthfully people will not boycott flying for very long beacuse they will not want to spend 2 days in a car driving to Florida.
My view is really about all the people screaming their civil liberties are beign violated. I don't see the issue as so con law 101 bc while the airlines are privately owned companies the TSA (governmental) is enforcing/implementing the searches.

I'm ok with it. On a somewhat good note one of my gf's went away last week and has two kids and was traveling with in-laws and TSA only made her FIL and DH go through and not her and the kids which is good.

Glad they didn't have to go through but imo what an example of ineffectiveness.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?
I recently flew (in October) and had to do a pat down, it really is not as instrusve as it sounds or how it's made out to sound, it was not a big deal. People hear "pat down" and think they are getting groped, this is not the case, at least for me it wasn't. I went through Islip and Ft Lauderdale airports. The inspectors (women) were very nice and respectful, none of my "private areas" were touched, the inspector used the back of her hand on my back across my bra strap and the back of her hand under the bra, it was really not a big deal. I didn't feel violated or anything like that, I was completely comfortable the entire time.
If anyone on here went to rock concerts in the late 80's or early 90's, it's no different than a pat down you got at Nassau Coliseum or MSG.
It' not like the pat down you get when you are arrested, the instrusive "put my hand up in your junk" pat down. LOL, Not that I've been arrested but DH tells me.

I disagree that flying is a "privilege" so we should get over it. These days, many jobs REQUIRE you travel for work and you don't have a choice - or rather, your choice is to be assaulted, or be unemployed. I find this whole new process disgusting and don't feel "safer" for one second.

This is not what my mother experienced last week. She said they felt her genitals, around her breasts, etc with their palms - not the back of their hands which is part of the new procedures. She was upset, angry (with the policy, not the workers) and humiliated. I felt awful for her. Because she has an artificial hip, it seems she will always be subject to a physical search as they got her both ways. The idea of it is incredibly upsetting to her. She comes up here at least 3 times a year and is now considering the train because she can't stand the thought of going through this again.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?
I'll take a pat down any day from a girl (assuming a guy won't be able to pat down girls) and would never do a body scan. It's 100% insecurity on my behalf. I understnad it's for saftey but I'm not a threat so they don't need to see my nakeness. They'll be patting me down.

Ok that wouldn't bother me either. however, look at my stretched skin on my stomach that hangs down from having 4 kids .... No, you don't wanna look at it. I will be getting felt up. I don't care that they are doing the scan. It makes sense to, but as long as I have another option I'm cool. If I had no choice, well then I'd have to deal with it and get over my insecurity for that brief moment.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?
I don't mind it. I have been on 18 flights since the 1st week of Sept. If it means me being safe go ahead.
I haven't had any issues with TSA workers grabbing or fondling me.
When I was on my way to the UK I had a layover in Amsterdam and they had me go through a scanner and made me throw away my water which I bought in the airport. I was glad to see how tight security is. I was even stopped prior to boarding the plane from the UK for a spot search.

In Tampa & LaGuardia. It stinks because her hip comes up as something in the scanner so they still searched her, even after she explained the artificial hip and presented some card issued by her doctor that she is to present in these situations. I felt horrible for her - she was practially in tears telling me about it when she got home.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?
It's not the extra security that bothers me - It's not even the scan itself - I couldn't care less - You want to full body scan me? Knock yourself out. i'm not easity offended and I choose to believe the person behind the scanner is not a creep - if he is and he's getting off on it, so be it - as long as I don't have to see you, and you can't get near me or my kids - I don't care what you do w/ my scan -
What bothers me is that I feel like our rights are being stripped piece by piece by the gov't and the whole 'safety and security' thing is just a bunch of BS. We all go along w/ it and don't question it b/c we're scared of our plane expolding in mid air .........but is that a real and rational fear? Or is that a gov't/media generated fear - KWIM??
I feel like after 9-11 the government in place seized an opportunity and took advantage of us and preyed on our fears -
Is there a threat? Of course
Is the threat as bad as they make it out to be? I don't think so -

EXACTLY-flying is not a right is a choice if you dont want to fly, drive or take a train or stay at home. I see it the same way if you dont like something about a store you dont go there.

This is my main problem with the enhanced searches. I am upset about what my mother went through but if you get down to it, this is what I have issue with. When something else happens, then what? Will there be actual x-ray machines instead of ones that produce nude images? You can't carry anything on to the plane? Will the airports stop selling anything past security?
