Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
His body was found close to where it was last seen and intact. An autopsy will be performed but they believe he was drowned. May he RIP and his family find strength to go on for their other kids. There are no words.

i saw this on the morning news.
my prayers are that they boy's death was fast and that any pain he suffered was brief.
that poor father. the way that man will torture himself for the rest of his life...
and father's day is this weekend.
i'm crying just thinking about it.
Yes, those were my prayers too. It's so hard to assimilate what that little boy must have gone through without braking into tears! May God help this family because their lives will never be the same

As shocking as this is, and tragic, I'm very surprised at Disney's lack of appropriate signage since their main focus is supposed to be safety and foreseeing possible accidents and scenarios that may happen. Some things you cannot foresee but alligators in the lagoon they know they are there and it is their responsibility to warn their guests.
I don't even think appropriate signage was their biggest problem. If they know alligators are potentially in that water, and alligators are nocturnal, and alligators can come out to the shores of the water...why the hell are you showing a movie there at 9 PM????

I know from vacationing down there that sometimes gators get into pools and stuff, but you would assume they remove them from a resort like this. They have already captured 5 gators and haven't found any sign of the boy. They allow the wild predators to just live there and expect the guests to know better. That is negligence. Put up a f*cking sign with a gator on it and no one would go near the edge of that water.
the problem is you can remove them all you want but they will always be able to get back in. Them come through drainage pipes etc. All they can do is remove them the best they can but this is FL....you can't be gator free.
True but setting up a beach with lounge chairs and bonfires and movie night in their natural habitat is a bad idea all around. It would be like setting up picnic tables in the gorilla habitat at the zoo. Stupidity.
If you think of it that way you would never visit FL again. There are gators at every park, beach area, neighborhood etc.
Do they live in the ocean? Like if I am on the beach in Miami, I doubt I'd see a gator crawling out of the water, right?
They can tolerate salt water and def can be In Brackish water. While you won't see them come out of the ocean then can crawl across land and come from the marshy bay side of any place. So basically anywhere you are in FL they will be.
Ugh great. Something else to worry about in this world. Wonderful.

So horrible. I can't even imagine seeing your child be dragged off by an alligator and not being able to do anything about it.
That water though looks so gross. If I can't see the bottom, I don't care if it is just wading.... I would never put my feet in.

I have no idea so that's why I'm asking, but if his body was found close to where he was last seen, and I'm assuming that's the first place they looked for him, why did it take so long to find him? Could he have been saved if they had found him when the search first started?

As parents...as devasting as this entire event is...I hope they can find SOME solice in the fact that he wasn't (for lack of better description)...ripped to shreds. I feel like finding him that way would just be that much more horrific.

They said the water was SO murky that it was difficult to search. They used sonar to find him.
Poor thing. My heart goes out to the family.

Could he have been saved if they had found him when the search first started? the water there is super dark, almost black green. It would be very difficult to see in that water. I always thought it was filled with bacteria due to the color of the water.

Me too, definitely skeeved the water which is why I told my 3yo do not go near that water. As a kid I used to ride speedboats in the lagoon when i would stay at the Contemporary. One time I hit another boat by accident (came too close to a friend) and almost fell over. OMG. I if knew there could be alligators in there I would have never gone in that water. Never again will I and I won't let my child going forward.
So sad. To die at the happiest place on Earth. OMG. Insanely tragic.

Maybe they should consider putting fencing around the entire lagoon, as a barrier. Can alligators climb fencing you think?

this is beyond horrible!!!!!!!!the poor family!!!! i can't!!!
saw the lake on the news, its gigantic and dark. Knowing that alligators are everywhere in Florida, how on earth is this even a way to setup a place with vacationing children/people?? I don't go to Disney but i'm just really not understanding this.

Me and dh were just talking about a fence. My dh rarely gets upset over news stories. But when they said they found the body in tact he had to leave the room. He didnt want to cry in front of the kids. This is just so heartbreaking I cant imagine. That poor family. May that tiny angel Lane rest in peace.

Re: Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
DH used to live in FLA. He said if an alligator comes after you, they can run REALLY fast for the first minute or so.He said he was taught to run ZIG ZAG if an alligator comes after you because they cannot run that way. Figured I would share.

I forgot that they actually still offer water skiing there. Right in that lake with all those alligators. Disturbing! It's that Sammy Duvall Sports thing

The fact that they offer ANY activity in the lagoon should indicate to anyone that they MUST be on top of alligators on their premises. That doesn't mean that one can't get in (after all, it's FL) but Disney is not in the business of having patrons get attacked by gators so I'm sure they take as many precautions as they possibly can to keep patrons safe. In the wake of this tragedy I would bet changes will be made to further ensure the safety of their guests so something like this can't happen again.
