Re: Amtrak derailment
Absolutely awful and devastating. I actually take this train line fairly often to travel to DC for work. So scary. It's making me think twice although I know bad things can happen anywhere, any time.
From what I've read, the train was going around a steep curve north of Philly and derailed. They don't know cause/reason yet.

Amtrak derailment
The investigation has only just begun as to speed, human error, equipment or infrastructure.

Re: Amtrak derailment
my Dh rides this line every day via SEPTA regional rail as we live in PA. He knows exactly where this turn is and is freaking out a little. the lines are currently shut so he has to work from home.
prayers to all those involved and their families.

I know right. I have a fear of flying, but am coming to see rail travel is probably more dangerous- first that accident a few months back with the woman on the tracks that got hit and derailed the train, now this. Scary

Amtrak derailment
It's heartbreaking. I am hoping they find the reason so that they can correct the issue immediately. This is a very busy line.

I think it is well past due that our nations leaders address all of the transportation issues in our country. we need infrastructure spending to correct the nations bridges, railroads, roads, etc

Yes X1000! With the amount of taxes we pay, it's disgraceful that we have the infrastructure of a 3rd world nation at times

Re: Amtrak derailment
This sounds like the Metro North train derailment in 2013. It also derailed going around a bend. Speed was a factor in that. And I believe fault with the engineer.
Early investigations found that the train had gone into the curve where it derailed at almost three times the posted speed limit. Later it was learned that the engineer, William Rockefeller, admitted that before reaching the curve he had gone into a "daze", a sort of highway hypnosis. He has since been suspended without pay; prosecutors are considering bringing criminal charges and claims have already been filed against him, Metro-North and the MTA.

Amtrak derailment
Many people on the train said it was going too fast around the bend and they had to hold on. I am guessing human error.

Re: Amtrak derailment
Young CEO and mom is missing after derailment...
Young CEO missing
The chief executive of a small tech company in Philadelphia is missing and may have been on the train that crashed on Tuesday, according to her company.
ApprenNet's Rachel Jacobs has not been heard from since she "left a meeting with the intent to board the train" on Tuesday, according to ApprenNet cofounder Karl Okamoto, a friend and colleague.
"Rachel uses a so-called '10 Trip' ticket, so there would be no record of her reservation until the conductor scanned her ticket on board the train," Okamoto said.
Jacobs is married with a two-year-old son. She was recently appointed as CEO and commuted from her home in New York City to her job in Philadelphia.
"At this point we have no news," said Okamoto. "As you can imagine, we are all very frustrated by the lack of information."

I saw that. Doesn't look good. She would have called her family if she could.

I'm confused by this. Either she was on the train, or she wasn't. If she was on, like it says, her ticket would have been scanned. Amtrak cannot verify that?! Their system is seriously screwed up. I had read that they have a manifest, but never know who is ACTUALLY on the train. And please, get some seat belts! I've also learned from this to never sit in the 2nd car (car behind the engine). Inertia makes that car get crushed in the event of derailment (as we see).

And think of the LIRR- they are still in the 1800s with punching tickets. They would NEVER know who was on any given train. So archaic!

Maybe her ticket was not scanned yet, and the conductor had not gotten to her yet? I'm not sure how the 10 trip ticket works, but I know on the LIRR, it takes them a while sometime to get to you. Sometimes they don't punch your ticket at all.

Amtrak derailment
In 1943 there was another derailment that killed 143 people. That was equipment problems though, but still crazy it was in that same area.
