I read a comment someone made on FB yesterday stating if Congress would get their heads out of women's vaginas maybe they could keep the citizens of this country safe and avoid horrific incidents like this. Funny and true
But if the operator was going almost twice the speed limit, how is it the fault of Congress? This is a prime example of the lack of personal accountability.
I think these comments were made before the speed of the train was known. There are a lot of issues with the infrastructure in this country and I think people were speculating that might be a cause in this instance.

I know practically nothing about trains in the US...
But isn't Amtrak considered a high-speed train? A speed of 100 mph doesn't sound excessive to me. Or is the train situation in the US that sucky that there are no high-speed trains? Isn't the point of these intercity trains to go faster than driving?
The LIRR or Metro North I can understand the limit being 60-70 because it's a commuter train.
Maybe I've just been living too long in the land of high speeds to think that the 100 mph on Amtrak doesn't seem that crazy to me.
Not sure of all areas. But in that location the max was 50mph, most likely because of the curve.
I don't think the 100mph through the regular course of travel is the excessive issue, it's the issue of that specific curve at that speed.

the worst part is that Amtrak didn't have that safety device installed that stops or slows a train down at curves and bridges, the same kind that shouldve been at spuyten duyvil in Metro north. How is it that the federal government is not MANDATING that device on all railways? I heard on the news that that device hasn't been installed on MOST of the northeast corridor trains that ARE THE MOST HEAVILY TRAFFICKED IN THE NATION. W t F is wrong with this country?
So to me the feds also bear responsibility for these deaths and injuries. I wonder if a sitting senator or congressman were killed if the mandate for that device would come down from on high.
ps the young man that was killed was from Rockaway Beach and I know his aunt very well. From all accounts he was a superstar. God rest his soul and give his family comfort, along with all the other families.
I disagree with placing blame on the feds. If a city bus driver is driving twice the speed limit and crashes, it's the bus driver's fault. Not the government's. This man likely fell asleep. If he was doing his JOB, this wouldn't have happened.
and I bet he is going to go with the sleep apnea defense like the Bronx driver (who faced NO charges in the end)
The thing is some areas trains and rails are equipped with a system that if the train is going to fast it signals the engineer. If the engineer doesn't respond it automatically slows the train down. He probably did fall asleep. But what if he had an emergency situation and passed out. This is where congress comes in. because they slashed the funding. There needs to be a back up. At the very least 2 engineers in the cab

there are, in general. DH is a civil engineer, he works primarily heavy civil, mean bridges and tunnels.... we don't drive over the Tap, and we don't drive using the Palasky (sp?) highway in Jersey.... He talks about this all the time, because there are so many bridges that need repair/replacing.

Ah, I see now. Reading helps, lol.
Well then, yeah, that's excessive.
But I think it's worth taking a look at the state of the infrastructure in the US.

Yeah the Tappan Zee is a disaster waiting to happen. I try not to think of that when, if ever, I drive across it.

I don't think that's what it is at all.
First of all - and I haven't read it in its entirety, only what was mentioned here - it sounds to me like a political statement against the government's meddling into the private lives of women. (Which I totally agree with.)
Second of all, it's saying that these issues are distracting the government from investing in our infrastructure. I think there are many different reasons why we don't invest in our infrastructure, but I don't doubt this is one of them.
I didn't see anyone say that the engineer is not to blame. I don't think putting the blame where it belongs AND advocating for the technology to protect against humor error are mutually exclusive. It's common sense to improve our systems with the goal of saving lives. What if the man had a heart attack and collapsed through no fault of his own?

There is a law in effect - unfortunately for this incident, it requires that the Postive Train Control (PTC) system be installed by the END of 2015 - so for right now, there was no violation of that law

Amtrak derailment
This thread reminds me of "Your Fault/Last Midnight" from Into The Woods - it's known as "the blame song" where everyone is throwing the blame around. It's a horrific tragedy, one that unfortunately could have been avoided, and hopefully the necessary changes will be made.

wow had no idea.
it absolutely boggles my mind how this government works.
after hurricane sandy, here in Rockaway, in order to open the beaches, Mayor Blunderburg ordered bathrooms be installed practically overnight at a cost of $100 million dollars. just to open beaches, not save lives or anything. I understand the train device is federal not local, but just an example of how when somebody in power wants something done, somehow it gets priority. very sad and no consolation to the families.

I keep seeing this, but it's not Congresses fault (or anyone else's) that this man was operating the train at twice the speed limit.
You are right, but originally everyone was talking about the poor infrastructure. A comment was also made that there is equipment available to stop things like this and that lawmakers should be intent on making changes to the ways railways operate which emergency mechanisms at sharp turns, etc.

just saw on ABC nightly news that the law was created after a crash in 2008, and that the industry says the 2015 deadline is impossible to meet.

Reports now that there was someone who was shooting at the train. Apparently there are 2 gun shot holes near the front of the train.
Where did you read this? I have the news on all day and haven't heard that

Amtrak derailment
The train has a dead man pedal they are reporting. So the train should have not been speeding up if he fell asleep. Starting to think suicide then pulled the brake after second thoughts.
