Amtrak derailment
Train accelerated minutes before crash....
Right before its fatal derailment on Tuesday night, Amtrak Train 188 accelerated significantly as it approached the Frankford Junction curve, the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday.
In barely a minute, its speed jumped from 70 m.p.h. to 102 m.p.h. three seconds before the crash, said NTSB member Robert Sumwalt at a news briefing. The speed limit in that area is 50 m.p.h.

how would it be possible for the train to accelerate from 70 to over 100 in less than 1 minute? I think there are two possibilities 1. Attempted suicide by the engineer, who had second thoughts at the last second, or 2. A severe malfunction. According to an article on yahoo, a person with the same name as the engineer belonged to a train forum like lif but for trains, and that person spoke about train safety and what the train companies should do. His friends are all saying how much he loves trains.
As more info is coming out, I am less inclined to think it was suicide by engineer and more a severe malfunction. I would like to it would take longer than a minute for a train engine to accelerate from 70 to over 100. Frankly, why give trains the option to go that fast in the first place? It is not a maglev or high speed rail.

A sports car can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. No question a train can do the same.

This sounds like the Metro North train derailment in 2013. It also derailed going around a bend. Speed was a factor in that. And I believe fault with the engineer.
Early investigations found that the train had gone into the curve where it derailed at almost three times the posted speed limit. Later it was learned that the engineer, William Rockefeller, admitted that before reaching the curve he had gone into a "daze", a sort of highway hypnosis. He has since been suspended without pay; prosecutors are considering bringing criminal charges and claims have already been filed against him, Metro-North and the MTA.
OMG How awful
Holy shit! Horrible.
And...no charges will be filed against this engineer.

Re: Amtrak derailment
I think it's very suspect that the train went from 70 up to 106 as it was going into a curve when it should have been slowing down. The engineer was also ranting and raving in recent months on forums how it shouldn't take an act of congress to make changes for train safety. I hope this wasn't deliberate and he was trying to make a point at the cost of 8 lives.

But a sports car weighs a lot less than a train. I would imagine that kind of acceleration would be difficult on such a heavy train

I figured.
I believe there's actually a condition known for train operators where they go into a daze. Imagine looking out at long long tunnel vision of train tracks. They have a lot of counter measures put in place to avoid it but still add in sleep apnea and its a dangerous mix. Imagine his guilt? From what I've heard other engineers who've suffered from that condition have said they felt like they could see it and wanted to stop but felt like they were moving in slow-mo and they literally were. horrifying.
Looks like it was the cause back in 2013 too link to 2013 train derailment story on highway hypnosis
