Any advice for "prepping" for glucose test...

I have to go for the 1 hour within the next week or two and of course I am eating the worse things these past few weeks. I know you your not supposed to fast before the test so I was wondering what/if there are some good things to eat/drink before I go. I really, really want to pass this the first time!! Chat Icon

Re: Any advice for "prepping" for glucose test...

My doc said don't fast no matter what the lab tries to tell me.

I am going to eat a high protein breakfast- eggs and cheese maybe.

I am not going to eat any carbs that morning.
I would just rather not....

I'm probably going to have to lie and say that I did, because I took the test very early on (don't know why, I think it was a mistake) and when I went she asked me if I fasted and I said no and she said I had to come back.

Yes my Dr told me I had her permission to lie. Chat Icon
They seem to think they know better than the Docs at that lab for some reason... Chat Icon

I agree that if you have Gestational Diabities you don't want to try to trick the test. Eat as you normally would. I ate almost a whole roll of lifesavers right before the test and I still passed. Good Luck

I don't think there is much you can do for the 1 hr. I ate normally in the week leading up to it, and failed it by 10 pts. Fasted for the 3 hr as required, and passed just fine.

Re: Any advice for "prepping" for glucose test...

Add me to the "don't try to trick the test" list.

I totally get why people are inclined to try to do this - taking the 3 hour doesn't seem like a picnic and I wouldn't want to take it either - but if you have GD you really need to know. It could be serious!

I took my 1 hour the day after my birthday last time. I made SURE I had a piece of cake on my birthday, just in case they told me I couldn't eat it again! Chat Icon

i wouldn't do anything differently.

my dr said avoiding things can sometimes skew the results and actually make u fail the test.

Re: Any advice for "prepping" for glucose test...

yeah see that's what I wanted to avoid, I don't want to eat a chocolate donut the night before and have that throw everything out of wack! I guess it is what it is. I think I'll be ok....and just avoid that donut! Chat Icon

Re: Any advice for "prepping" for glucose test...

You cannot "trick" the glucose test.

If you have Gestational Diabities, you have it. Nothing you eat or don't eat will affect your number.

It is how your body tolerates the glucose drink.

I had GD with my first pregnancy. I had to take the 3 hour test, and I failed 2 out of the 3 hours. It was the 3rd hour that my number was horrific. I took the test first thing in the morning. Had what would be considered a GD dinner the night before (not on purpose, it just happened that way).

I had to take the 1 hour at 10 weeks this pregnancy since I had GD last time. Thankfully, I passed. And this was the morning after DD's 1st birthday party.... carbs and sweets galore! I will have to retake the test at 26 weeks.

Re: Any advice for "prepping" for glucose test...

This is how I understand it to be. I've sparked some argument before, I don't mean to, I'm just expressing what I understand.

I agree, you cannot trick the test. If you have GD the test will pick it up.

The test is designed to guarantee to pick up any indication of GD. So EVEN if you don't have GD its likely the test can fail for you. It is designed that way, therefore MANY people who don't have GD fail the 1 hour. The 3 hour is the more accurate test.

My doctor advised watching my carb intake, eat lots of lean protein and veggies for a few days prior, then just don't eat after dinner the night before. I took the test at 9am on and empty stomach and passed with a score of 110. Which is on the lower spectrum of normal.

So doctor said she can see I probably followed her advice, because healthy people will almost always score low on the test when they watch carbs and come from a 12 hour fast.

She has over 30 years of experience as an OB. Probably less with this specific test.

I agree with most of what you posted, except for your diet the week before. That's what I eat normally -since i don't eat any red meat (only chicken and turkey) and I eat a ton of veggies. The week before the test I barely had any carbs, if any. I failed the 1 hour adn the 3 hour. I have GD. I've been able to control it with Diet only, no meds. I think I am just sensitive to the glucose drink, honestly. I don't eat much differently than I did before an dmy sugar is never high, it actually is pretty low.

Don't try and trick the test. Having GD is not so bad. You test your sugar after every meal. As long as you can control it, you'll be fine. And my baby is not measuring big at all..only in the 45%.

I also was able to control my GD through diet, although I did have to go on a very low dose of meds because my morning fasting numbers were always high.

DD was also measuring in the 45th percentile, she was born a peanut... 6lbs 11oz.

Chat Icon you don't disagree with me though, you say "I failed the 1 hour adn the 3 hour. I have GD.", but a lot of people who don't have GD fail the 1 hour test. Its just advice as to how to avoid the 3 hour test if you don't have GD.
