What is everyone panicking for? The symptoms are that of common cold or other common respiratory viruses. Statistics show that the mortality of anyone affected by it is like 2 percent and some people don’t even know if they have it because there are no symptoms. Just make sure to practice good hygiene and wash your hands.
EXACTLY!
It boggles my mind that the same people who are very concerned about the coronavirus, will not get the flu shot. More people died from the flu this year.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
I just came from the supermarket doing my usual shopping on my lunch hour and the store was insane. I have to think it's a combination of the plastic bag ban starting this weekend and people stocking up for the coronavirus.

The same way I handled Ebola, swine flu, the actual flu which kills people - absolutely nothing!! Live my life per usual.
Also there are a lot of businesses that have offices or conduct business in China, so that “American” you’re next to on the train or bus could’ve have travelled to China within the year. My sisters colleague is actually stuck in China because they had a meeting there. So don’t just be weary of Chinese, I would stay away from anyone who is sick just like you would during this horrible flu and strep season.
That's a nightmare to me. I can't imagine having to be quarantined to a foreign country because I attended a freaking business meeting. Who knows how long they will be stuck there!!

I know it’s terrible, he’s been there for two weeks and he told my sister it looks like he will be there for a while longer.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
I don't have any trips planned
But friends of mine, parents and 2 kids, were going to Italy in about 10 days. They cancelled. But only because a lot of the tourist attractions are being shut down for cleaning. And they were worried that a lot would be closed when they got there. They didn't want to spend all the money going there and not be able to see the things they planned on seeing.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
The virus is coming to NY. There is no way around it. It’s not a possibility, it’s a guarantee. Masks actually make it worse because a. a simple surgical mask is ineffective and b. people wearing masks tend to touch their faces more and touching your face is how the virus is spread.
I have no plans to change my daily life, however, I would likely cancel plans to China, S. Korea, Italy or Iran if I had them. And believe me, I’m the furthest thing from an alarmist.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
I am sure it is on its way to the NY area. But I am not all that worried. I have been doing my research, and the CDC says that the vast majority of people will have symptoms similar to the flu, and fully recover.

And just read that Jet Blue is waiving change/cancellation fees for all flights booked between yesterday and March 11th for travel through June 1. I'm not sure I understand that policy - why not give the same allowances for flights booked prior to yesterday?
This exactly! I booked flights on Monday, before the Italy/Iran numbers were up and prior to the CDC issuing its warning but Jet Blue won't give me the same courtesy of waiving cancellation fees for travel during the same period. But people who book well-knowing that the number of cases and number of countries affected is increasimg, they'll waive their fees. It's all about Jet Blue protecting its bottom line and ensuring that people keep booking flights. I contacted Jet Blue about how unfair their policy is and that it should be amended to include anyone flying now through June. They said they were willing to look at individual cases and asked me if I wanted to cancel. My concern is that my dad is immunocompromised and has a lung disease so him getting something like covid-19 could be very serious and even lead to a fatality.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
Nope. Worrying never stopped anyone from dying, but it will definitely stop you from living. Remember SARS? H1N1? Swine flu? Bird flu? Ebola? Go search old threads on here and see the usual panic ensue. And then.....nothing. Some people aren't happy unless they are panicking and worried though. I'm on a train right now from Penn Station. I'll let you know if I die....
ETA...those masks everyone is wearing aren't effective. The sides aren't sealed.
Wash your hands. Don't touch your face. Watch this. common sense advice Go have a drink or smoke some pot. This too, shall pass. And then I will come here a few months later and bump this thread and the other ones about the end of the world that never came to pass....

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
No, but in typical fashion people already bought up essentials like water and toilet paper because the internet told them to. But that would've happened if there had been reports of an inch of snow too.

How about the drastic increase in sales for cleaning supplies such as hand soap, Clorox wipes etc. To me these are natural things that should be in your house. Do people not have cleaning supplies in the house on the regular?? Why is there a sales spike now?
ETA: No wonder Strep & Flu keep getting passed around like a STD in my sons school.

You would be shocked at how many people don’t clean and horrified to see how some people live...

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
I am not changing my plans just yet. The virus has just started to spread here and I expect in 2 weeks it may be like Italy. They have someone who had it at the Karneval parade here in Cologne. While Cologne is still far from me, a lot of people from all over go.
If it were Oktoberfest time, I would be slightly changing my plans. Every year here they have something called the “Oktoberfest flu”. It’s not a flu exactly, but it’s a strain of cold that isn’t really going around Munich at the moment. It’s brought from all the visitors. I had it one year and it sucked.
I wash my hands and do all they say, but you really never know. For example, at restaurants it is almost guaranteed that someone touched your piece of silverware after it has been cleaned. That goes in your mouth.
I am a bit worried because my mom and sister are coming in 2 weeks and I’m afraid the US will limit their travel back.

This is why I never ate at work Pot Lucks unless I knew the person socially. I don’t understand. I mean, I know I go overboard with cleaning but that’s my own germaphobic ways. But the way some people live (and I’m not talking about depression or hoarding issues, etc) helps me understand why everyone is always sick.

Exactly and people don’t actually read and research. They just listen to what others say and take it and run with it. The CDC doesn’t think it will be as bad in the U.S and the media has nothing else to report. Until the next thing happens, a mass shooting, etc, this will be the story of the day.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
I went to the supermarket today. I thought I would get a few things to stock up on that I thought would be OK to last me for a bit. I have a bunch of food in my freezer, so I didn’t need much. I also don’t eat a ton and I am fine without food for a day or so.
Pasta, shelf stable milk (popular here, but not THAT popular), and canned beans were completely gone. I’ve never seen this here before. I didn’t even check the water aisle because I don’t know why people are stocking up on water.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
The mortality rate for coronavirus is much higher than the flu.
It’s not going to be good. I don’t think people on LI are going to start dropping like flies but from a public health perspective it’s going to be a lot to deal with.
In terms of travel, I’d be more worried about quarantine than getting sick. Can you imagine being separated from your family for 2 weeks and housed with strangers, with a high potential of illness? That’s a really, really crappy situation.

Can someone explain to me why people are stocking up on food? Is it in case they themselves get sick and are quarantined? Or is it in case all businesses are shut down and so they can't buy things at the store? And why would there not be water?

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
The country's been wiped out of hand sanitizer and face masks (like masks are going to prevent you from getting sick), what are people doing with all this hand sanitizer?? Lining the walls of their underground bunker with it??
And the media keeps saying to prepare your family emergency plan like a hurricane's about to hit.

The water thing during any "emergency " always boggles my mind. Will the taps stop running? We just banned plastic bags, I can't get a ******** plastic straw at McDonald's anymore and we are buying bottled water like there is a draught? Buy yourselves a Brita pitcher and stop with the bottled water! I'm pretty sure our water supplies won't be contaminated

I didn't stock anything. Don't have a storeroom, lol. But, I think reasons would be not wanting to go to stores if the virus is spreading here, or being afraid of shortages.
