Are you choosing to have a midwife or Doctor deliver your baby?

Im still debating...what are your reasons for choosing one over the other?

Re: Are you chosing to have a midwife or Doctor delivery your baby?

I went with a doctor. I can really appreciate the approach of a midwife, and can really understand why many people would prefer one. However, there are just certain medical procedures, interventions, etc. that a midwife is not trained/certified to do, and I did not want to add any extra risk to the whole event. I didn't want to take the chance that something may go wrong and then we would have to wait, even if only a short time, for the doctor to get involved.

This are my thoughts exactly. If I had a crystal ball and could *know* that things would turn out ok, I would probably do a midwife. But that teeny tiny chance that something could go wrong gets the worrier in me all anxious. Dr. it is for us.

Agreed... Plus Ive been seeing my Dr throughout my pregnancy and he knows me... He knows my medical history and I know and trust him... He makes me feel comfortable so I know I want a him there for my delivery.

Would prefer a midwife but their are NONE that deliver at the hospital closest to my house (which is still 35 minutes away).

Re: Are you chosing to have a midwife or Doctor delivery your baby?

i have the choice this pregnancy to have a midwife deliver (she's part of my OB's practice) and i'm totally going that way. last time around i had a doula and she was worth her weight in GOLD. this time, there aren't any doulas near where i live, so a midwife it is! i am just an "as little intervention as possible" type of gal. no epidural, natural birth, etc.

Doctor. DH has had several calls at work where they had to follow an ambulance to the hospital due to things gone wrong. Not worth risking IMO.

Re: Are you chosing to have a midwife or Doctor delivery your baby?

I saw both during my pregnancy but ended up with a c-sec so obviously I had my dr deliver but my midwife stayed with me during the c-sec. My midwife was great during my 22 hrs of labor, even when I wanted an epidural she was supportive! She also told me that I should have a csec when it became obvious I wasn't going to dilate past 3cm. I think a midwife is really great if you are able to have a vaginal delivery. I would only use a midwife in a hospital though.

Pretty much what she said. It's just not something that I ever really considered, but I see nothing wrong with it.

Thanks for the input everyone! I would love to go with a midwife but that "what if" factor always scares me. I know that if I needed an emergency c-section or Doctor's care there would be on staff..but Im just so confused, ugh.Chat Icon

I am the same. I had a midwife deliver DS (i had a natural birth, no drugs, etc) and she will also deliver this baby. She works under an OB at the practice and they were in touch several times during my labor, he even has a system on his computer at home where he could see my contractions when I had the fetal monitor on. I felt completely comfortable with a midwife.

Re: Are you chosing to have a midwife or Doctor delivery your baby?

I don't know much about midwifery, I never looked into it but I have a question. If you go with a midwife don't you still deliver in a hospital and if something goes wrong isn't there a resident ob there that can jump in? I am staying with my Dr. only because i'm too chicken s*** to change. So many times though I have thought about switching.

Yes, this is what I was told that if there were any problems they would get a doctor..

Re: Are you chosing to have a midwife or Doctor delivery your baby?

from my understanding, my midwife is able to do everything my ob can do, expect perform a c-section. midwives tend to intervene less medically (if that's my desire) and that's what i want. it's reassuring to know if something did go wrong or needed to be escalated, the OB can jump in and take over.

I almost went with Stony Brook Midwives and they deliver at the hospital. They are part of a big OB practice and work with the doctors if there was to be a problem.

Midwives deliver in hospitals, not just home births.

I had an OB the first time around, will most likely use a midwife for subsequent babies as I want a VBAC.

I use them and they're wonderful. I find them to be a bit more compassionate and understanding than reg obs, but that's jmo. I actually have sch cs this time and they still over see my care. One will be present along with the surgeon.

I agree. It's a doctor for me for both pregnancies.

a midwife. and honestly, it's the best decision I've made for this pregnancy. I'm so much better taken care of at my midwife's practice than I was at my OB. I'm not just another pregnant woman revolving through their door. The personal experience I've had so far has been worth the switch.

She is much easier to get in touch with than my OB was, always calls me back within 10 minutes and has been able to treat me so far for every little thing my body has thrown my way.

If anything goes wrong with the delivery, I'll be in the hospital and ther is a dr right there to perform a csection if necessary.

I am not a midwife type of girl....I am all about dr's in white lab coats so a midwife never even crossed my mind.
My good friend had a midwife - we were expecting our 1st babies just a few weeks apart. It was amazing to me how diff her appts were than mine....I saw my baby at every appt she saw hers maybe twice.
She labored at home for 35 hours!!! Her plan was to deliver at home....that was her dream. Her body was just never ready...she had to go to the hospital and a dr. had to do a c-section. She was devastated...seeked therapy for many months afterwards feeling like her body had failed her. And then a few weeks later when I was induced and delivered vaginally - she was so upset with herself.
Sometimes things just don't go as planned.
She was in AGONY at home for those 35 hours.
I know everyone is different but just wanted to share my friends story.
She is hoping to get pregnant again soon and is interviewing dr's as she's assuming she'll need another c-section.

Oh no, I def. dont want this and maybe I didnt explain myself well. I dont plan on going the natural way...I want to be in labor for as short amount of time as possible. Im fine with epidurals and inductions etc. The only reason why Im considering a midwife is because they seem to take more time with you in the delivery room...they hold your head and wipe the sweat off your forehead if need be. Where as Doctors tend to be more in and out kind of thing (Im not saying all Doctors, please dont get me wrong). This is why Im debating it otherwise I would be fine with a Doctor.

I think finding the right OB you can get the same personal care as you describe with a midwife.

My OB has always been quick on the return calls and even gets to the hospital within minutes of my calls when I had issues.

I don;t think either decision is wrong. It is a personal choice but I think if you want to go with a midwife they should be taking care of you all along. so tot he OP if you decide on a Midwife you should start seeing them asap so they are familiar with your pregnancy.

I'm truly torn because I do like both the Doctor's at my practice too. Here is how the practice runs...there are 3 Doctors and 3 Midwives. They like for me to meet up with all 6 of them because any of them could end up delivering my baby. The day I give birth there will be one dr. and one midwife..I choose who i want. I am not doing an at home birth and do not want a natural, long labor. I will be at the hospital whether I choose a midwife or Dr. I will ask for an epidural. Again, I guess my concern is that the Dr. will just be in and out where as a midwife takes her time with you and is comforting. When I go to my monthly OB appts I notice the midwives do take their time a little bit more than the Doctor. I remember the first time I got to hear Chat Icon heartbeat with the doppler machine I was with the main Dr. of the pratice and it was like 3 seconds and thats it. The next month I meet with one of the midwives and she let me hear it for a good 30 seconds and even explained to me what the other sounds on the machine were. Ugh, this is very frustrating.

I just switched over to the StonyBrook Midwives about a month ago and am loving it! I did love my Dr. also but thought that the midwives would be less pushy about c-sections and other things. Their rates for c-sections and episiotomy rates are soooo much lower than doctors. Anyway, it's def a personal choice and go with your gut!
