Re: Are you choosing to have a midwife or Doctor deliver your baby?

I went with a doctor. I can really appreciate the approach of a midwife, and can really understand why many people would prefer one. However, there are just certain medical procedures, interventions, etc. that a midwife is not trained/certified to do, and I did not want to add any extra risk to the whole event. I didn't want to take the chance that something may go wrong and then we would have to wait, even if only a short time, for the doctor to get involved.
this exactly!

FYI, if you use a midwife and deliver in a hospital, there is always a doctor that can be called into the room if you require interventions that a midwife doesn't perform. It doesn't add extra risk. That's only a concern if you're giving birth at home. In a hospital your doctor isn't in the room most of the time, so there's lag time between an issue arising and a doctor's arrival regardless.
I delivered with a midwife at a hospital and had a wonderful experience. I met the on-call doctor, who would have stepped in had I needed her, but dealt only with the midwife and nurses. I chose a midwife because I wanted a natural, drug-free delivery with minimal interventions and that's exactly what I got.

I am not a midwife type of girl....I am all about dr's in white lab coats so a midwife never even crossed my mind. My good friend had a midwife - we were expecting our 1st babies just a few weeks apart. It was amazing to me how diff her appts were than mine....I saw my baby at every appt she saw hers maybe twice. She labored at home for 35 hours!!! Her plan was to deliver at home....that was her dream. Her body was just never ready...she had to go to the hospital and a dr. had to do a c-section. She was devastated...seeked therapy for many months afterwards feeling like her body had failed her. And then a few weeks later when I was induced and delivered vaginally - she was so upset with herself. Sometimes things just don't go as planned. She was in AGONY at home for those 35 hours. I know everyone is different but just wanted to share my friends story. She is hoping to get pregnant again soon and is interviewing dr's as she's assuming she'll need another c-section.
Oh no, I def. dont want this and maybe I didnt explain myself well. I dont plan on going the natural way...I want to be in labor for as short amount of time as possible. Im fine with epidurals and inductions etc. The only reason why Im considering a midwife is because they seem to take more time with you in the delivery room...they hold your head and wipe the sweat off your forehead if need be. Where as Doctors tend to be more in and out kind of thing (Im not saying all Doctors, please dont get me wrong). This is why Im debating it otherwise I would be fine with a Doctor.
Maybe what your thinking of then would be to have a Doula with you? She will be with you the whole time and do all that you just said and you can still have an OB too if that is what you are debating.

I had 3 with midwives and 1 doc . They were both amazing . I went so fast that noone had to intervene lol. My 1st was the hardest ,and I tried so hard not to get any meds ,but I couldn't do it anymore ,and the midwife totally understood and gave me meds. Do what you feel comfortable with :)

Re: Are you choosing to have a midwife or Doctor deliver your baby?
I used a midwife for the first and am seeing them again for this pregnancy. I ended up with a C-section, but I am still so glad I used them. They were wonderful and although they didn't actually perform the C, my midwife held my hand the entire time and took pictures for us after DS was born. The OB team at the hospital was so on point, it was amazing how fast they got everything together (it was an emergency C).
I am going to go for a VBAC this time if I can, but I am not worried or nervous at all if I end up with another C. I had a great experience and a great recovery. However, in the end you really have to choose whom you will feel most comfortable with.

This are my thoughts exactly. If I had a crystal ball and could *know* that things would turn out ok, I would probably do a midwife. But that teeny tiny chance that something could go wrong gets the worrier in me all anxious. Dr. it is for us.
Crashing. Just an FYI, a midwife doesn't add extra risk. If you're in a hospital, you're as safe as you are with a doctor. I had a midwife when I had my DD. I once asked her what happens in an emergency. She told me that there's a red button on the wall of every room... and if she hits it, 15 people will come running.
I wound up with a csection b/c my daughter's heartrate dropped. Everything happened the way my midwife said it would: she hit a button, people came running, I was in an OR within minutes.
To the OP: what you seem to want (the hand-holding, the sweat-wiping, etc) seems more like the job of your DH and/or a doula.

Exactly this!
Also - and I can be totally wrong about this - aren't midwives more on a "natural" approach - meaning they frown on epi's and such. I'm all for the drugs so I don't want to waste any time convincing a midwife why I'm chosing to use them and then have her make me feel bad about it. Again - I can be totally wrong about this but this is what I was under the impression of.

I had on OB the first time, and I'm looking into midwives now. It doesn't seem like they frown on drugs necessarily. It's more that people like me choose to have drugs w/o knowing what the consequences might be. They seem to be more about reminding women that you were designed, by evolution or God, to give birth.
And if any practitioner, EVER, makes you feel bad for an educated choice you've made... pick a new one.

Re: Are you choosing to have a midwife or Doctor deliver your baby?
I had my first with an OB and am seeing them again this time. My regular OB wasn't on call when I was admitted and one of the other doctors in the practice delivered my baby. He was very premature, but they knew my wishes to not have a c-section and definitly respected that. I did end up with an emergency c-section in the end because my blood pressure was through the roof and they couldn't wait any longer, but by the time they called for it, I knew it was because it was necessary.
My OB is all for VBACs and for as little intervention as possible. So, as long as everything looks good/healthy, I will be able to try for the VBAC. I would love a natural birth, but I am honest with myself and know that I will probably be begging for an epidural
