And to get over the confusion this is not a vaccine. So to say other parents have vaccinated their child in order to go to school is true again vaccines that have been around for a while and given over a period of 12 years. This is a new, unproven shot that apparently you need to keep getting boosters this is NO way a vaccine that provides immunity!
I’m not saying I disagree with you, but I wish people would stop using this argument because it just sounds completely uneducated and stupid.
In the medical community the flu shot is a vaccine. The term vaccine does not mean long term or lifelong immunity.
A shot would be insulin, cortisone, etc.

I agree it's a vaccine. But it's different in like the flu shot it's a vaccine for a mutating respiratory virus.
Well, the far right is saying that in Biden's speech yesterday, that he's hinting at shutting down schools that don't have vaccine mandates... I just have this feeling it will be bigger than just needing it for schools...

But it can also be said that if there is a pandemic and a vaccine is available, it is logical to get the vaccine.

And if this passes, here we are going to have everyone homeschooling their kids and teachers are going to start losing their jobs. I'm not ant-vaxx, but I don't think something this new should be forced...
Do you really think more people will start homeschooling?? Honest question.
I have no plans of homeschooling so if it’s mandated they’re getting it I guess. I don’t have the time to homeschool and I really don’t want be the one teaching my kids.
What I still find ironic parents are now all up in arms about mandates saying how no one‘s going to tell them what to put in there kid etc etc but there are already vaccine mandates required for schools. I get it it’s new and they are only against this one etc etc but I really wonder how many actually realize there are mandates now where they recently changed it with no religious exemption.
The other vaccines that are mandatory are for diseases that are more dangerous to children than Covid. And this vaccine is way too new for me to want to be forced to put it in my daughter. And to can still get and spread Covid with it. So what's the reason to force it on children? The flu shot isn't mandatory. Why would this one be?
I don’t know why people keep saying parents must not realize vaccines are mandated. I’m sure the majority do, we aren’t idiots that don’t know the rules of the school our kids attend. When I got the letter last year that my son needed to show proof of his meningitis vaccine, I understood it was a mandate. We don’t like THIS Covid vaccine, this fairly new vaccine that won’t do much for our kids but has death as a side effect and enlarge hearts, possibly infertility that you won’t know till it’s too late.
Science tells us this vaccine won’t stop the spread or that kids need to be forced to take this vaccine. Wtf is so hard to comprehend.
What I find hard to comprehend is that people don't understand this very simple logic.

But it can also be said that if a population (children) is extremely unaffected by said pandemic and the vaccine doesn't not prevent contraction or transmission of the virus, why would it be FORCED on said population?
That can also be said......

The Childhood Vaccine Debate Ignores a Crucial Point: Kids Aren't Supposed to Die
BY JEFF VERGALES AND DR. MONICA GANDHI NOVEMBER 3, 2021 12:37 PM EDT
Dr. Jeff Vergales, MD, MS is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia Gandhi MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine; Associate Division Chief of the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine; Director of the Ward 86 HIV Clinic at San Francisco General Hospital; and Director of the Center for AIDS Research at UCSF
With emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine newly approved for children 5-11, many parents are asking the question—should we vaccinate our kids? To be fair, many parents may have already made up their mind on this topic with the majority not rushing to get their kids vaccinated.
Much of the argument against vaccinating this younger age group is that COVID-19 just doesn’t seem to cause a high likelihood of significant illness among immunocompetent children. Thankfully, purely as a percentage of total cases, this does hold true. To date, over six million children in the U.S. have contracted this coronavirus which has led to 64,000 hospitalizations and 650 deaths. These numbers pale in comparison to the over 3,00,000 hospitalizations seen during the pandemic in adults that has led to a staggering 718,000 deaths.
The low rates of complications and severe illness from COVID-19 in children is the exact data needed to justify a swift return to normalcy for many kids. It underscores the fact that schools should be open, recreational activities can continue as scheduled, children should be allowed to socialize with each other in a normal fashion, mask-mandates need an end date, and we should minimize learning loss from exposures. Yet, the argument that kids are, for the most part, unaffected medically by COVID-19 ignores a simple, yet essential, premise.
Children are not supposed to die.
The denominator of how many kids have contracted COVID is so vast that it makes it easy to ignore the very small numerator. While the low likelihood of severe illness in children should continue to drive our public policy, the fact that there are children that succumb to this illness, needs to drive our vaccination guidelines. In pediatrics, children recovering from disease is the expectation—the norm—yet we must always remember that it does not always happen.
To put this in perspective, COVID would currently rank 6th in the list of reasons that children die every year in the United States. Trauma (including motor vehicle accidents, drownings, firearm incidents, suffocation and other injuries) dominate the majority of childhood death and drives advancement of seatbelt laws, car seat laws, firearm laws, and swimming pool laws to reduce this number. Cancer, mental health disorders, and heart disease come next which are massive focuses of research spending and medical advances aimed towards improving survival from these conditions. While all of these events are rare, just like deaths of children from COVID, they absolutely do occur and are devastating for the families that go through them.
Yet, none of these conditions have a preventative strategy as profoundly effective as immunity to COVID-19. We vaccinate children to prevent severe illness and death, not to prevent mild disease. It is the same reason that pediatricians emphasize influenza vaccination—not to prevent all kids from getting the flu—but to protect children who should not be hospitalized and die. This remains true for the other 16 pediatric immunizations the CDC recommends and nearly every state requires. The goal is to prevent severe disease in children, keeping children alive and healthy.
If a medication existed today that would prevent children from ever developing and dying of cancer, we would never be discussing whether we should use it—parents would be lined up. If we had a shot that ensured your child would never suffer from mental illness or commit suicide, families would be all in. If a treatment existed to ensure a child would never die from a congenital anomaly or heart disease, it would be criminal to not incorporate it as the standard of care.
Most American parents have never been in a serious car accident, yet they don’t think twice about insisting their children ride in car seats and use seat belts. Why is this? The rate of fatal car crashes as a factor of how often we drive is thankfully low—and similar to fatal rates from COVID. Yet, if a car crash were to occur, the seatbelt may be the only true protection from harm. Simply put, kids buckle up to ensure if on the rare chance a serious car accident occurs, it will have a low likelihood of leading to death.
The COVID vaccination program in children keeps this same premise. Just like in riding in a car, the chance of a fatal or near-fatal event is very low, yet with COVID we use vaccination as our protective tool to prevent severe outcomes. Parents choosing to double down on masking and social distancing maneuvers for the foreseeable future may reduce exposure for a time, but these tools are not sustainable and have no effect on altering the course of the disease in a child.
The vaccine must also be safe to be effective. COVID-19 vaccines have now been given out to more than 6.6 billion people worldwide, with the safety data clear. Furthermore, the vaccine prevented 90.7% of COVID-19 infections in children. The episodes of myocarditis seen more commonly with the mRNA vaccine after the second dose in males are rare, mild and easily treated. We tend to forget that this is the same demographic that has developed myocarditis associated with the actual viral infection, oftentimes developing profound illness requiring intensive care. Yet, minimizing the risk of this rare adverse effect is the exact reason for the lower 10 microgram dose deliberately decided upon by Pfizer in June of 2021.
In pediatrics, we are used to prescribing medications “off label”, meaning not for their initial intended purpose or age range. We do this because we frequently lack clinical trial data in children and have to base medical decision making on assumptions, logic and very small studies. With the conclusion of the current trial, pediatricians will be prescribing this vaccine with more data, knowledge and science behind it than virtually any other medicine we routinely administer. We will base this on billions of real-world examples in adults and thousands of children in a clinical trial. While that might not be enough for many parents, that is vastly more data than other medications we usually give children.
So where did we lose our way? Parents that have fully vaccinated their children up to this point remain hesitant to give this vaccine despite the rationale, safety profile and approval process being identical. We need to return to our usual approach to childhood vaccination by recognizing that a “one size fits all” strategy is impractical and ineffective. Conversations and medical decision-making surrounding childhood vaccine needs to leave the public space and return to the doctor’s office. We should not be discussing the necessity of vaccinating children against COVID; instead we should be determining the best way to do it.
Doing this will allow us to meet the needs of the individual patient in the exact same way we do for all other childhood vaccines. We should be reviewing data that longer intervals (6-8 weeks) between doses increases immune responses, effectiveness and safety and may be a better approach for many children. Providers can discuss with parents how to manage children with natural immunity (none of the cases of COVID in the child trial occurred among those with prior infection) and whether a single dose of the vaccine following natural infection is the best approach in that situation. This is the framework for other immunizations and needs to be for this one as well.
We need ongoing safety monitoring which is exactly what pediatric providers do every day with other vaccines and continues to be the framework for this one. Spending time debating if instead of how children should get the vaccine ignores every parent’s goal: keeping their children alive and healthy.

You have to do what is best, in your eyes, for your child. Period.
In my eyes getting my son vaccinated as soon as he was able to is what I decided was best for him, based on recommendations from his doctor.
The decision to vaccinate or not to vaccinate is not an easy decision and one that is not going to be solved on this message board.

Cut down the quote because it got too long.
However- what you wrote- right here- is EXACTLY what I , and all the others who are against mandates are trying to say. We all as parents need to make this decision this difficult decision, that can't be solved on a message board- for OUR OWN CHILDREN Period, end of story. You hit the nail 100% on the head.

I honestly feel for the parents struggling to decide what to do. For those facing the prospect of having no other choice but to homeschool if the vaccine is mandated. I know I couldn't do it.

“Children aren’t suppose to die” unless it’s from the vaccine then it’s ok. I’m so confused by that statement. The percentage of kids dying from the vaccine is small but the same can be said for kids who died from Covid.
I would never use that line as my argument against the mandate for kids.

Bill to make covid vaccine mandatory in schools
For every 10 people I talk to i would say 1 is definitely vaccinating their kid(s). 2-3 would do it because they can’t homeschool. That leaves about half that would refuse. There is no way (although this past year every time I say there is no way I’m wrong) there wouldn’t be catastrophic consequences if they tried to mandate this. Teachers, a majority of the Long Island population, would lose their jobs due to low enrollment. Parents would leave their jobs to homeschool. People would leave the state (if it’s just a state mandate). I already know the top three out of state towns I would move to in the event we have to pack up and leave quickly. I have knots in my stomach. My kids had Covid and had a sniffle! I wouldn’t even consider this shot for them since all it does is lessen symptoms. Let parents make the choice for THEIR kids.

A sniffle is now apparently unacceptable. We must lessen that to a small itch in the nose.

My group is pretty much the same.
I just feel like they are going to make it so difficult not to vaccinate that people will feel forced to give in. Like in NYC right now.
But then there will be large groups who don’t comply as well and Covid will still mutate and spread.
I feel like we need a clearer plan before moving forward. We don’t know for sure what’s next for the adults to are vaccinated either. Everyone is supposed to need a booster this winter. And immunocompromised may need a 4th. If we vaccinate our kids, how often will this be? I know it’s new but even an idea would be useful.

You really think that many people will pull their kids to homeschool them. I asked someone this before and I am being serious.
I just can’t see it happening. And really it scares me thinking that so many would; I feel like some people should not be homeschooling their kids. Lol
Listen I see both sides of this argument and I definitely lean towards it should be a parents choice but I definitely think people will be giving in so they don’t have to homeschool and I will be one of those people! I rather hold off on vaccinating but if I have no choice I will. I’m already leaning towards doing it only cause I don’t want my kids to have to quarantine when there are positives in the classroom but I won’t do it just for that reason!

It’s not traditional homeschooling. It’s Pods. And I actually would consider it. My kids are still getting socialization which is the biggest negative with homeschooling. They have a real teacher and they just switch houses every day or every week. There are music places that offer lessons and homeschool music classes for groups. There are facilities that offer group homeschool gym classes. Art studios offer classes for groups. Basically any birthday party place now has drop in classes catered to homeschooling. I can’t speak for other districts, but we have parents who are already doing behind the scenes work…..mostly the healthcare workers who were fired and see the writing on the wall.

Not all kids just have a sniffle. I have a long hauler from CoVid and will have to go and see a pulmonologist to check her lung function.
I agree with parents' choice but don't diminish those parents that have reason to have real concern with it's just "sniffles".

Bill to make covid vaccine mandatory in schools
There are parents who want to vaccinate as soon as their kids are eligible. And that's okay. There are parents who don't want to, ever. and that's okay. There are parents who aren't sure. that's okay too.
The real issue: We should all stop arguing with EACH OTHER because that's not productive. If you don't want to vaccinate your kid(s) and want to fight the possible mandate, go for it. Don't waste your time posting on an antiquated message board insulting each other because you have different opinions than others. I'm not even sure I should post my opinion bc it will be attacked or misconstrued. But, here's MY PERSONAL FEELINGS FOR ME AND MY DD: I am vaccinated, DH is vaccinated. I feel most people should be vaccinated, but I understand and respect people's decisions not to be. We will not be getting boosters. My 39 year old husband had a minor stroke about 5 months after his vaccine. Drs do not know why, he's had all the tests done. It was a SMALL stroke, he recovered very quickly and is fine now. Is it possible the vaccine caused it? Yes. Is it possible it happened for another reason? Yes. Do we want to take that chance? Nope. Does that influence my decision to get the 3rd shot or give it to my 11 year old...how can it not? Am I still nervous that she'll get COVID and get really sick- yes. Because it could happen. She could also get it and have little to no symptoms, there is no way to tell. She could get vaccinated and be FINE for the rest of her life with no side effects ever. But, we don't know. So for now, we're not getting it. IF and when it's mandated, we will make our decision. But, I expect everyone to respect that decision, because we made it for our own family based on our experiences and I am not judging anyone who does OR doesn't get it for their kids. Being a parent the last 2 years has been exponentially harder than we ever expected and we all have to do what's right for our families. It's not a black and white issue.

I can only go by numbers right now And the numbers put the chance of serious illness in young children at a very low percentage About the same or less than a side effect of the vaccine I know an 18 year who died FROM THE VACCINE So don't diminish those parents who have reasons to have real concern of a serious issue with the vaccine in their child either
Bottom line - there is no way on earth that this vaccine should be mandate for children None There is no argument for that Get it for your child if you want, that's fine But it should not be forced on a child
This thread was never about if you should or shouldn't vaccinate your child It was about it being forced And I'd love to hear someone come here with a reason why it should be forced I'll wait

What happens after your vaccine "expires" and you are then mandated to get a booster? Have you thought about that as it seems everyone just says well, I am vaccinated. Yes you are BUT for just now and so many say they won't get the booster. How is that going to work when they require it or test weekly?

My kids had Covid and had a sniffle! I wouldn’t even consider this shot for them since all it does is lessen symptoms. Let parents make the choice for THEIR kids.
A sniffle is now apparently unacceptable. We must lessen that to a small itch in the nose.
Not all kids just have a sniffle. I have a long hauler from CoVid and will have to go and see a pulmonologist to check her lung function.
I agree with parents' choice but don't diminish those parents that have reason to have real concern with it's just "sniffles".

Very well said - and nobody is going to change their opinions based on what someone from LIF says.
I do think it's a good place to discuss your feelings but there is no need to attack those with different viewpoints.

What happens after your vaccine "expires" and you are then mandated to get a booster? Have you thought about that as it seems everyone just says well, I am vaccinated. Yes you are BUT for just now and so many say they won't get the booster. How is that going to work when they require it or test weekly?
I literally said "IF and when it's mandated, we will make our decision" I have to ask if you even read and comprehended what I said if that is your only comment? I don't know when or IF anything more will be mandated...and I'm not going to sit here with whatifs ruling my life. You won't want to vaccinate or get your kids vaccinated, cool. Do you. Stop trying to antagonize an argument from people.

I can read and comprehend, thanks but do you honestly think you will have a choice though? How different will it be from what it is now? They are mandating that all companies over 100 be vaccinated or weekly testing. It doesn't look like it is ending anytime soon.
I ask because so many are saying well I won't get the booster not realizing that you will be in the same boat as any unvaccinated person in little to no time.
Both my kids and husband are vaccinated, thanks, and they didn't have any issues when getting vaccinated so probably would continue getting a booster if they truly needed it. I am holding out until I can't possibly hold out anymore.

Agree, very spot on. I don't even think its only for LIF, I think in general you aren't going to convince or change someone's mind on a passionate topic. However, I do like to hear people's perspective and experiences.
I used the link someone shared a few weeks ago to help my sister book appointments for my nieces. I respect her decision and it wasn't one they took likely nor was it an easy one. I actually agree with why she is getting them vaccinated and she agrees with my decision on how we approached the vaccination decision with our boys (SS & DS). It doesn't have to be a mud slinging, nasty debate.
I hope they don't mandate this vaccine for children. Let the parents and kids decide for themselves.

Why does the medical community call is a flu shot and not the flu vaccine? Do you think its because its easier to get people to take if they hear shot versus vaccine. I never hear the doctors call it a vaccine.

That’s interesting.
But to add on, I would be against any sort of mandate for the flu shot/vaccine too. It’s not just Covid.
I have nothing against vaccines that prevent the transmission of the disease, or in the case a man made virus that is constantly mutating. My kids have always gotten their vaccines on schedule. This is the first time this shot is being used in this way…some people are apprehensive and doing things like paying people to get “vaccinated” makes people more hesitant. Put a mandate on congress. Put a mandate on the postal service. Maybe people wouldn’t question it so much.
Furthermore, could be a coincidence, but I know 4 people who have gotten cancer diagnosis since getting their Covid shots. Breast cancer and colon cancer. I’m just not ready.
And I respect anyone who is willing to roll their sleeve up and not judge those that aren’t ready.
