Posted by Colleen9304 Huh? Useless? Are you honestly going to argue that women's breasts were not "made" for feeding?? The extra "benefits" are just that - benefits.
can i ask you an Honest question? You say that breasts are not Sexual in anyway (or are only Such b/c of societies views). Have you NEVER been aroused by any spot on your breasts or nipples Whatsoever?
im just saying that thats not their Sole purpose.
Um, then we're saying the SAME thing. The PRIMARY purpose of a woman's breast is for feeding - it was made with ducts and a nipple so that a baby can feed. Secondary purposes are just that - secondary.
We're going tit for tat (pardon the pun ) and it's moot. I think we both agree on the same things...we're just choosing to put more emphasis on whichever thing works for our "argument".

Re: Breast feading in public. The view protest.
I have no problem with women brestfeeding in public. If I were a mom though, I wouldn't do it b/c of all the pervs who would stare. NOT b/c of anyone's comfort level - but b/c people would be staring at us like we were either freaks or gross old men might try to see some boobs

i appreciate your use of the pun there
i disagree with women whipping out their boobs anywhere. I am not crazy conservative, but i just dont agree with seeing boobs while im trying to eat. Especially when there Are, in many cases, an alternative.

I am around enough women who have had babies who either have or are still b/f'ing who have to deal with these opinions on a daily basis. It's a struggle that they shouldn't have to deal with, IMO.

Re: Breast feading in public. The view protest.
I am a breastfeeding mother. I breastfed Emma till she was 2 1/2 (which some peole view as too old) and now Jeremy. It is IMO what is 100% best for my family. There have been times Ive gone out and forgot to bring something to cover myself with, I use my shirt or my hand to cover any part of my nipple thats exposed. My son gets hungry, no matter where I am, I am going to feed him. Some people dont want to see a womans breast, no matter how small of a part, but would you rather listen to a screaming child while you are enjoying your dinner? You couldnt pay me enough to take my child into a dirty bathroom to feed them, heck you arent supposed to keep your own toothbrush closer than 6' from your toilet... IMO society should get over it, its just a boob, they were put there to feed our children. AGAIN JMO anyone that has a problem with it should REALLY look into what they would do in that situation. As a mother you find yourself doing a lot of things you swore you would never do or found uncomfortable before having a child (ie. wiping someones a$$).
I also wanted to say about "why not give them a bottle" issue - Emma refused a bottle. She has never had one. Giving a bottle is not always the easy way out! PLUS a BF child may reject the bottle is the source is close by.
BTW, Colleen Ive agreed with everything you've said

why dont you think they should have to deal with it? i do. personally. like i have said, if its done discreetly then fine. but when its made into a big production and obvious then its like "c'mon i'm EATING here i dont need to see your nipple!" maybe theyre not doing it discreetly then. if you dont want people to be annoyed by it, dont do it. i will NEVER b/f in public.

I just wanted to add on the MAIN topic of this post the person who was on the plane that was uncomfortable was proabably THIRLLED that the baby wasnt screaming through the entire flight. The baby was probably quiet and content. Would the "complaintant" rather have a screaming baby flight?

I don't understand why you're arguing with me nor why it's such a big deal to you!
No, I don't think women who choose to nurse their baby, should have to deal with people being uncomfortable and annoyed by it. I also have never seen a woman "whip out her breast" - I did, however, see a woman change her baby's dirty diaper AT the dinner table in a restaurant. THAT, I find disgusting and completely inappropriate - but FEEDING a baby at a table, not so disgusting.
Sorry - that's MY opinion...I'm not saying it's LAW or RIGHT. OR that your opinion is wrong.

Uh-oh - you opened a whole other can of worms!! LOL I used to be one of those people who would get so annoyed by babies screaming - and why weren't the parents doing anything about it, etc......UNTIL I spent weeks with my sister and helped her tend to her (now) 13 month old.
It isn't easy and I don't think people should be so quick to pass judgement until they've been in the shoes of those they are judging.
IMO.

Re: Breast feading in public. The view protest.
I dont think anyones OPINIONS means they are passing judgement. I personally DO not want to see a womans breast, brestfeeding or not. If I were breastfeeding my child, I would make sure I never left the house without something, simple as that. I see a breast as a sexual thing, no-one has to agree with me, its only my opinion. I thought we could give opinions.
I think some of us are saying we dont like it and those that do breastfeed in public are the defensive ones that feel they have to defend themselves....WHY?? No-ones saying your wrong, just that us or me personally dont like to see it. But why would anyone care what the heck I thought? No-one on here is going to take my opinion into consideration before breastfeeding.. Just like I wouldnt take someone pro doing it in public opinion into consideration
So lets remember to see if what we are reading is an opinion or an attack. Theres too much defensiveness around here...We all love each other...lets be nice

KP- i agree that i would rather have a child be fed, then Scream during a whole plane ride (when there really is no place to take the screaming baby). BUT i think something thats getting tossed aside here is that most people (myself included) said that their issue was NOT about breast feeding in public, but about NOT being discreet about it or covering it up.
Both of my SILs have twins (5 months and 7 months), so theres ALOT of breast feeding around me. i have Never seen their boobs. and thats all i'm saying (as i think the majority is as well). Do what you have to do for your child- but it shouldnt be flashed in other people's faces (and i agree... i would NEVER breast feed my child on a toilet.... i think the poster who originally said that may have meant a bathroom that has a seating area, but i dont know).

OK, I'm going to agree to disagree with you. I don't have a baby but I'm around a lot of babies and there is just NO WAY to plan your life around a nursing baby.
I just don't think a lot of people are understanding that it's just not as simple to do as it is to say.
I'm a mother of 2...breastfed both my babies..and I do not feel it is appropriate to bf blatantly in public...there are very discreet ways to nurse your child WITHOUT having to expose your entire breast!! I bf my Sofia once so discreetly, my friend thought I was just sitting there holding her. Sometimes, IT IS that simple!

BRAVO to Colleen! Well said in all your posts. I knew I liked you
I am/was a breastfeeding mother. I fed Andrew until he turned 1. And I did it in public!! And on an airplane - 3x!!
I did do it discreetly, as best I could. I would never go into a public restroom to feed if it didn't have a lounge area where I could sit comfortably. I would never feed in a stall. That's just gross. People have to get over it. If it bothers you so much, don't look!!

Re: Breast feading in public. The view protest.
I have no problem with bf in public, but I DO think they should cover up.
I for one have never seen a women bf'ing in public WITHOUT covering up.
And I would cetainly rather have someone bf on a plane rather than hear a screaming baby!
