You can have complications from a cold.
You can have complications from a cut on your finger too...but I am not sure we should compare that to chicken pox or any other disease that we vaccinate against.
Before the vaccination was available there were 145 reported deaths due to chicken pox per year - after the vaccine became available that # is now less than 1/2. While that is a "small" number we shouldn't just discount it as a harmless disease!
And yes when I was a kid and had chicken pox it was the best, I didnt have to go to school, my friends still came to play (to get cp of course) so even though it was uncomfortable it didnt seem so bad as a kid. As a parent I feel differently.
I say to each there own in terms of what you choose to do with your child and in the end you have to do what you are comfortabe with!
Yes the deaths have cut down currently, but the debate against the vaccine is for future projections for breakouts of adult CP and Shingles which will produce a higher amount of deaths and complications.
I am not against vaccines. This happens to be one I am not comfortable with. As you said, to each their own.

Re: Chicken pox vaccine spin off
My 2 siblings and I NEVER had chicken pox. My mom used to throw us in playpens with other kids all through my school years to try to make us get it.... Nothing.
When I started teaching, a student had it. Still, I didn't get it, but other teachers that came in contact with her briefly did. I thought I was immune.
Then, I went for a physical and the doc asked me if I ever had it. I told him no and they tested me. I was NOT immune! So as a 24yr old adult, I got the vaccine. I vaccinated DS for it too!

Re: Chicken pox vaccine spin off
I am pro-CP vaccine. If my child were to get CP before they were old enough to understand it, I feel like it would be impossible for them to bear it without tearing their skin off and screaming for a week straight. Plus, it is not true that if you get it naturally you can only get it once - I think the majority of people only get it once, but I know several people that got it twice and one person who got it 3 times! Both my kids got the vaccine with no side effects, and I don't regret it. If it wears off in the future then I'll deal with it, I don't feel like I am any worse off.

Re: Chicken pox vaccine spin off
I may or may not give my children the vaccine, I'd much rather they get CP although not til around 5 yrs of age can we plan a party for then?
And ITA with Katie Chicken Pox IS a harmless childhood illness under most circumstances, not ALL, but most. 145 deaths out of how many millions of people that get the CP every year? That is a very small number. Yes, it is a horrible tragedy for those 145 people and their families, but those cases are rare.
I had it when I was 12, I was sick for a day and itchy for a week and then it was gone and that was it.
What scares me about the vaccine is how new it is and the what if's for the future.

Posted by katiebug I don't like the vaccine because it is a harmless childhood illness, and when contracted naturally you are protected for life.
I had chicken pox in elementary school (I must have been in kindergarten or first grade) and was told that because I was so young when I had it that I could be at risk for shingles.
Can you share where you got your information because I'd love to read it...and I mean that seriously...not to go against what you are saying.
I had the chicken pox when I was 2.....then I got shingles when I was 10. I still have scars from it. It was HORRIBLE......itchy and painful!!!!!!
My twins got the vaccine.....
Interesting. This is the exact reason why I don't want to vaccinate against chickenpox.
You can still get shingles if you have the vaccination CP vaccine. And many people believe there is going to be a huge outbreak in shingles because of the CP vaccine.
im confused. she didnt say that SHE got the vaccine. she got CP because (im assuming) she never had the vaccine. i do not believe there was a vaccine when we were children. when you get CP, it is possible to get shingles later in life. therefore, if she had gotten the CP vaccine as a child and not gotten CP, it is likely they she would NOT have gotten shingles ... right? or am I missing something?
I did NOT receive the vaccine as a child -- which I believe is why I got shingles as well......
exactly, thats what i thought
Yes you CAN still get shingles. You MAY also be able to contract CP as an adult.
There is a HIGHER risk of getting shingles if you have actually had chicken pox vs. if you only got the vaccine. Hence why so many people here, including myself, have indicated that we have gotten the shingles (fairly young too) after actually having had the chicken pox when we were younger.
I had chicken pox when I was little...no vaccine. I had shingles last year. The doctor was alarmed because it's usually an "older person" issue she said. I'm otherwise healthy (no compromised immune system). My grandma said they have a Shingles vaccine for senior citizens.

just FYI: there is a vaccine for shingles link to CDC
I only know this b/c my dad was part of the test study group. But you have to be 60 to get it.
This really good to know. Thanks for the info. One interesting fact that i read on this CDC link is, "Studies show that more than 99% of Americans ages 40 and older have had chickenpox, even if they don’t remember getting the disease". So whether you choose to vaccinate or choose to let your child get it naturally most of the population has the chicken pox virus dormant in their body so they could get shingles later on. So those who choose to try to get their children to get it naturally how is that better than the vaccine. Even if your child gets it naturally they can get shingles. Now that there is this known vaccine I ma sure soon they will test its affect on the younger population especially if their is a worry of a shingles outbreak int he future.
We have so many difficult decisions as parents. I like these threads because they give me good info and keep me thinking.

Re: Chicken pox vaccine spin off
I may have missed a post so I apologize if this was covered. I think some of you are mixing up a "first time" chicken pox infection as an adult with shingles which is reactivation chicken pox.
Here are the facts:
1. Unless you have had a prior chicken pox infection you cannot get shingles which is typically a "band" of painful blisters on the skin. So folks with natural immunity from having had chicken pox can get shingles. It is in theory possible to get shingles from the vaccine since it's live, but that is rare.
2. "first time" chicken pox infection is worse in adults than in kids. The antivax folks are concerned I guess that if the immunity wears off and you get chicken pox as an adult you can get really sick.
3. The vaccine is effective in most but some 10-20 percent the immunity wears off. If the vaccine immunity wears off you can get a primary chicken pox infection all over your body (not shingles although some people mix the 2 up).
I guess parents are taking one of 3 options:
1. Not giving: Here you have a risk of getting chicken pox now (or later) and while may get the disease you could have a severe case.
2. Not giving and going to the pox party: Here you are more likely to get the disease and more likely to get a milder case (if younger), but there's a chance you may not and then later on get a severe case.
3. Giving the vaccine (my opinion, and that of the CDC, AAP, etc, etc, the BEST and really ONLY choice): You have a good shot at lifelong immunity and low risk of singles. If your immunity does wane off by the time it does assuming vaccination rates are high the risk of getting the disease is extremely low since we've killed the reservoir by vaccinating everyone. Also, the risks from the vaccine are less than the risks of getting the disease.

Re: Chicken pox vaccine spin off
I got chicken pox at 15, and as others have said, I was miserable. My sister was 6 at the time, and while she was sick, it was much milder. I was covered head to toe, even had pox in my ears. And my mother had pushed me to play with kids/relatives when they were sick when I was young, hoping I would get it as a young child. Yet time after time, I did not get sick when young.
We gave DS this shot, but delayed it for a number of reasons. He got it a little before his 3rd birthday.
I think now that he has had the vaccine, we have to make sure he stays current with boosters moving forward so he doesn't contract it as a teen or adult, like I did.

Re: Chicken pox vaccine spin off
Having the chicken pox at 16 was one of the worst experiences of my life...I was covered head to toe and inside certain places...I was home from school for 3 weeks. If they had the vaccine back then I am sure my parents would have given it to me. My DS had it at 12 months. I had no qualms about giving it to him.
