So my question to you is this: are there any working moms on this board who would continue working even if they didn't have to financially?

I did for 7 months and then I quit! most moms working work FT because they have to or they would be working PT / not at all/ volunteer .

Not true at all. Even if I didn't have to work, I would. I have a career that I worked hard for- and that didn't end just because I gave birth.
Nobody expects a man to end his career when he becomes a dad- why does everyone feel a woman should want to?
Very 1950s if you ask me....

I know a lot of women who work full time because they want to - they worked very hard to get to the place they are in their career and continue to do so (even though financially they don't have to work).

I would still work f/t. My dh makes enough for me to stay home but I really love my job. I went to school for a long time and worked hard to get to my position. I love my dcs more than life, but I don't think my family would be a happy family if I stayed home.

Re: Crashing this board...a question for working moms

Me! I had 6 months maternity leave and it was amazing. I was a wreck deciding to come back to work. DH's answer..."So don't go". I had to do it FOR ME. I had recently gotten a promotion that I worked very hard for. DD is and will always be my number one priority, but I find going to work fulfills me in a different way. I decided to go back "part time", and I have Fridays off. It's been working out GREAT.

Now after we have number 2, I can't say I won't stay home for a few years. Chat Icon

No, that's not really true. My husband makes plenty of $$, more than enough for me to become a SAHM, but I choose to work because I find it makes me a better person, a better wife and a better mommy. Most of my friends at work feel the same way...

I am a civil rights attorney - I find my job incredibly intellectually stimulating, and incredibly rewarding. I also work for the government, so I also have the benefit of an incredible work/life balance. I never miss a single event for either of my daughters, I'm always home by 5pm, and I'm always there for my kids if they are sick. The work/life balance is SO good that I was even promoted to a managerial position, only 2 weeks after coming back from a 6 month maternity leave!

Personally, for me, I need to work, for my own sanity. I need a piece of my life that is all my own, that I can pour my brain into. Having that outlet helps me be better focused for my kids and husband when I DO spend time with them. At the same time, I have two girls, and it's very important to me that I model for them that they CAN have it all - a great, rewarding career, AND a family.

I recognize that not everyone operates this way and that's the beauty of life - that we are all different, we all tick in different ways, and all contribute to our environment in different ways

I would work no matter what.

Ideally I would like to work part time but being that I am the "bread winner" there is no way I could do that. I enjoy the weeks where I am home with them, but it is becuase we are all on vacation. I find that becuase of our arangement we focus more on quality time then quantity. For us this would not be the case if I was a sahm, where I am sure other's can make that happen.

I would be able to afford to stay home but I CHOOSE to work.

i cant afford to stay home, but i wouldn't even if i could. i like talking to adults during the day and its rewarding to bring home my own paycheck. plus i went to school for 7 years so there was no way i was giving that up! plus...i really believe DS learns more at daycare than he would with me. they have so much more patience. and it makes me value the time i have with him on the weekends.

I don't work because we need the $$, I work because I like what I do and the level I've climbed to within my company.

I don't want to work forever but right now I wouldn't change a thing.
