I am the only one who first thought depression and suicide?

That's what I keep thinking based on the amount of alcohol that wasn't digested/metabolized. It just sounds like she was drinking out of anger and with intentions. Even her erratic driving behavior sounds like she was angry.

If she had a drinking problem, especially to this extent, how would it go unnoticed??? And why would family members allows their kids to be in the same car with her if they knew she had a problem. BUT she clearly used marijuana since it's not something you can just pick up at any store, which also makes me wonder how much her husband knew. Usually when someone uses, their SO uses too. I find it hard to believe that she was leading a double life where she smokes pot and drank and her husband knew nothing about it.

I'm also wondering if the family isn't cooperating based on the press conference. When the lead investigator (I think that's what his title was who gave the press conference) was asked about the family cooperating, he paused for a bit and then stated that they have spoken with them, but because of the circumstances it's been difficult to speak with them at length and that they do intend to speak with family & friends further. If they were cooperating, I think he would have stated that and then proceeded to say that they need to speak at further length.

I also thought suicide and you always hear about women trying to kill themselves and take their kids too BUT where would the brothers kids come into play? She needed them too in her sorrows?

The post article made me sick to my stomach.

Smoking and drinking while taking care of / in the presence of 5 children is ....I can't even think of a word harsh enough.

How does one drink and smoke pot while taking care of kids and then drive no less? Or drink and smoke WHILE she was driving?!
A monster that's who.
NO "good" person would do this to 5 innocent children!

Because she was drunk/high, her life insurance plan is no longer valid. Her DH is not entitled to the money.

Just like if someone was in a car accident and they were drunk/high, I am 99% sure the insurance company does not cover the medical expenses.

Does anyone else think that July 26, 2009 wasn't the first time Diane drove drunk or high? So much of the truth is not being said and the only way the truth will come out is if the DH and BIL speak.

The fact that she still had alcohol in her stomach - not yet digested - infuriates me. She was literally drinking and driving those kids on a friggin busy parkway! This was not the first time she has done this!

No it doesn't add up this is what I get from it:

9:30 they leave together (they are normal, campsite lady spoke to her and husband says she is in good health) he follows her on the road

10-10:30 - Mcdonalds (at this point she was normal according to employees)
Husband doesn't stop and continues. (time is approx because it is atthe beginning of the trip)

10:30- approx 1 - She was seen driving erratic on 17 and 87. Cutting people off and flashing headlights, driving in the grass.

1:00 - She pulls off after the Tappan Zee, calls her brother, Emma speaks to him (on the phone about 10 mintues). She is supposed to stay there but she leaves and leaves her phone.

1:15 - No incoming calls recieved from her cell phone

1:35 - Accident

1:42 - Brother is driving to Tarrytown and calls police (probably because she has answered her phone in 30 mintues).

- When contacted her husband was already home, trip takes approx 3 hours.

What doesn't add up is how the heck her blood level got to .19?

Was she REALLY drunk before Mcdonalds and no one noticed?

How many drinks does it take for that level?

I was going to say my family goes to Villa Roma every year which is in callacoon the town next to Liberty and it takes us 2.5 hours to get home...What was this woman doing for it to take her 4 hours especially if she was driving erratically. Something with this story doesnt add up. Wouldnt her husband be worried that it was taking her so long to get home...

This story just makes me sick and I could not even imagine what these families are going through. Knowing my sister in law killed my children would make me lose it...ughh

Don't know what she said other than she didn't feel well and she couldn't see and then the daughter got on the phone.
What happened to the phone also? How did it end up on the ground?

I said that to someone yesterday - how strange that was. They said maybe it was in her lap and she got out of the car for something and it dropped. Although knowing what we know now, doesn't appear to be too hard to lose track of it in that state.

i almost think the BIL is lying about talking to her, maybe he was trying to cover up for her for some reason.
I think that the oldest daughter could see what was going on and was scared and used her aunts cell phone to call her dad. diane got mad at her for calling ( being impaired and all) and threw the phone out of the car. that probably why BIL called the police, too because he knew she was drunk/high, and not just sick.

I think the same thing.

I also question, if so many people saw a van driving erratically on the highway,k honking the horn, driving in the shoulder, with kids in the car, why didn;t anyone call 911 then? I don;t get it. We have a police scanner and at least 2-3 times a day, there is a call in for an erratic driver....

I have called before on erratic drivers myself-better to be safe than sorry.

Either way, this is such a tragedy, that could have been avoided. I am sick over it.Chat Icon

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in

This is the ONLY instance that I wish the drunk driver didn't die - I personally would try to spit in her face. I hope to God and all that is holy that she is suffering and being tortured in the worst imaginable way possible. I can't believe how much hatred and anger I have for this woman that I do not know from a hole in the wall. Those poor beautiful angels and their families. Especially after reading the statement from Katie Flynn's mother I can't even imagine what they must be feeling. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

I hope this pig is rotting in Hell and if it comes out that someone KNEW - her husband, her brother, whomever - what she was capable of -I hope that they suffer immensely. I'm shocked at myself and the hatred that is filling me up. She's disgusting.

eta: My thoughts and prayers are also with the Yonkers men. Although they didn't receive as much coverage here on Long Island news I have kept them and their families in my prayers.

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in

I heard the news today when I was out and was so upset, I sat in my car stunned. I don't find the idea that she could have a giant cup filled with vodka in it unconceivable and was drinking it like a soft drink. One could easily drink a big Gulp, why would it be hard to believe someone could drink that much alcohol. Straight alcohol, not mixed into drinks, so the "10 drinks" it would take her to get to .19 in not hard for me to understand. And smoking a joint, with 5 kids under 8, not hard to picture either. There are so many ways she could do it, including smoking and driving. Clearly discretion would be the least of the offenses committed. So I can understand the how. I can't understand the why. Even taking into account if she was an alcoholic/addict, the need to drink that much and get high and drive, drive 5 small kids a long distance, surely there were other signs... I don't buy the idea of it being depression/suicide - someone in that state would hardly be going camping for the weekend and taking her 3 nieces along as well... maybe I just can't wrap my mind around it. I can't believe this woman was a monster in her life but whatever her state of mind, she made a horrible horrible decision that killed so many innocent people, not just the children but those poor men, doing the right thing, minding their own business (who got 1/25th of the press coverage). Honestly, I think she is better off dead, I don't know how someone would be able to live with themselves after this. I know that sounds terrible but maybe not, there are many visceral reactions to her out there today (not just here, everywhere). I can't help but feel anger at her. So tragic. I can't imagine what her family is going through. I can't believe that any of them would knowingly let her drive all those kids if they knew she was capable of this. I guess more will come out...my kids are camping with my DH and I miss them so much right now.

Her husband I feel nothing for. I highly doubt she was smoking and boozing on her own.

I just hope losing one of his children and almost another b/c of it is enough for him to NEVER EVER do it again.

I am truly shocked by this sentiment. I think it's absolutely disgusting and deplorable. How in the world would you know that she was doing this with her husband? According to all the previous reports, her husband left the campground separately and earlier than her. The following I cut and pasted from today's Newsday article about the findings:

Schuler, 36, ingested the alcohol and marijuana sometime after she left an upstate campground about 9:30 a.m. on July 26 with her two children and three nieces, New York State Police Maj. William Carey said Tuesday. A woman fitting her description was later seen driving aggressively on the New York State Thruway and Route 17, police said.

At 1:35 p.m., she entered the Taconic driving south on a northbound exit ramp, going into oncoming traffic for 1.7 miles before crashing head-on into an SUV, police said.

OK - so, her husband left before her - she left at 9:30 - FOUR HOURS later, she has the accident and police say it was after she left. In an earlier portion of the article, the police say the tox report on the marijuana show it was injested 15 minutes to 1 hour before the accident. She hadn't been with her husband for HOURS.

first of all, I explained why I think the way I do in other posts on the thread.

second of all, why do you even care about what I "presume". she had ALREADY METABOLIZED alcohol and had some ON HOLD in her stomach. that says, TO ME, IMHO that there was something more going on here.

I guess to you I am a disgusting person. since I know who and what I am...I am totally fine with you thinking that about me.

what makes you say that?

just b/c 2 people are married doesn't mean that are both addicts.....trust me

I agree with Ophelia. They were there together. Even if he wasn't doing the drugs/drinking WITH her, he HAD to know as they were there together. So he had to either be participating or simply KNOW and STILL allow her to drive. Bottom line.Chat Icon

From what I read, they were not there together. The Father was on a Fishing Trip and did not go that weekend.

They said from the beginning that the husband was home hours before she was expected to arrive. Why is it that he "had to know" she was drinking and using drugs?.

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in

I just heard on CBS that the husband stated that she drank socially and smoked marijuana occasionally. Also, the investigator stated during the news conference that the family has only permitted limited interviews and that police wished they could interview family members more, but were "limited". The other families are starting a civil suit so hopefully everything will be discovered. It is just unimaginable that noone close to her would not have any clue about a problem. It is not like she had a glass of wine. There was a 1/4 bottle of vodka in her stomach alone.

I would still like to know what his daughter told him that he would decide to call the police. He must have known she would not pull over.

If she was having trouble seeing, and couldn't tell him where she was, and handed the phone to his daughter, I would be alarmed too. I don't think it's suspicious that he would call state troopers to look for her - she said she didn't know where she was, right? I'd be worried for her and my children.

I agree!

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in

I can guarantee that more info will come out and the missing pieces of the puzzle will answer a lot of questions.

IF she decided to drink, smoke pot and drive with kids in the car whether with intent to commit suicide or not, it is disgusting. The utter selfishness of this act renders me speechless if in fact this is truly that case here.

IF there was foul play by her husband or someone else, it will come out the truth always does.

Right now, the toxicology report has me unnerved, angered, sad and most of all heartbroken for that little boy in the hospital fighting for his life. What the sheer terror of that car ride must have been for him, seeing his mom like that, strapped in a car seat, not able to do anything. Wanting to protect his sister and cousins, knowing his mom was driving the wrong way. The terror of the 10, 8 and 6yr old nieces right before they died. This is what makes my heart ache.

My three yr old knows something is up if I have a headache, or if we take a different way home from her day care, she questions it. Imagine the last moments of these children...I am getting choked up thinking about it. Chat Icon
