I can guarantee that more info will come out and the missing pieces of the puzzle will answer a lot of questions.
IF she decided to drink, smoke pot and drive with kids in the car whether with intent to commit suicide or not, it is disgusting. The utter selfishness of this act renders me speechless if in fact this is truly that case here.
IF there was foul play by her husband or someone else, it will come out the truth always does.
Right now, the toxicology report has me unnerved, angered, sad and most of all heartbroken for that little boy in the hospital fighting for his life. What the sheer terror of that car ride must have been for him, seeing his mom like that, strapped in a car seat, not able to do anything. Wanting to protect his sister and cousins, knowing his mom was driving the wrong way. The terror of the 10, 8 and 6yr old nieces right before they died. This is what makes my heart ache.
My three yr old knows something is up if I have a headache, or if we take a different way home from her day care, she questions it. Imagine the last moments of these children...I am getting choked up thinking about it.
I cant even stomach this. Never before has a news story affected me like this. I'm constantly thinking about this tragedy, replaying this event over & over in my head.
I'm absolutely heartbroken- my heart bleeds for this little boy and the familes of all involved. And the poor family of those gentlemen. God. I cant even write this without getting choked up

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in
I really doubt this is a one-time thing- she had to be a regular drinker to be able to have that much alcohol and not be on the floor. If I had less than half that amount, I would not be able to move, let alone get into a car.

The fact that she still had alcohol in her stomach - not yet digested - infuriates me. She was literally drinking and driving those kids on a friggin busy parkway! This was not the first time she has done this!
They found an open Vodka bottle in the car

I'm Irish and a drinker and I doubt I could do 10 vodka drinks over a night of drinking.
That is no small amount of vodka in her body

Her husband I feel nothing for. I highly doubt she was smoking and boozing on her own.
what makes you say that?
just b/c 2 people are married doesn't mean that are both addicts.....trust me
I agree with Ophelia. They were there together. Even if he wasn't doing the drugs/drinking WITH her, he HAD to know as they were there together. So he had to either be participating or simply KNOW and STILL allow her to drive. Bottom line.
From what I read, they were not there together. The Father was on a Fishing Trip and did not go that weekend.
They said from the beginning that the husband was home hours before she was expected to arrive. Why is it that he "had to know" she was drinking and using drugs?.
She didn't pick up the pot and vodka at the rest stop.

I agree
I grew up with an alcoholic. Someone who drank vodka because it didn't smell. This person could drink a whole bottle and you would not even know. Everyone has there limits but her limits were very high. I doubt she was a closet drinker if she had no problem drinking in front of her nieces. Of course they knew what she was doing.

Sounds to me like this woman was on a suicide mission. To have that amount of alcohol in your system and then drive (let alone with those poor children) in the car . Unexcusable!
Who knows what additional details will come out in the upcoming days and weeks. Her husband said she was a social drinker and smoked pot ocassionally. This does not seem like the behavior of someone who is a social drinker. My heart goes out to all the families involved. This news must be devastating for them. It's like adding salt to the wounds.

I agree. Social drinker my assss. I'm a social drinker..I drink for a party or special occasion. Driving home from camping is not a social occasion..
This woman had to be an alcoholic. She purposely got in a car chugged vodka like it was water and smoked pot with 5 Kids while driving a car...a weapon in her condition...she's a murderer. She took innocent lives...7 of them!! She destroyed families.
I hope to God her husband and brother had no clue about her problem but somehow I doubt it. With these new facts out and the fact that her family has been less than cooperative with the police makes me think that they knew something was wrong. Also the fact that her brother was quick to callt he police makes me scratch my head...if she was sick call an ambulance but he called the police...I think he knew she was a danger to herself and his kids. If they did know they are just as much to blame as she is and I hope they live with that guilt for the rest of their lives.

ITA with EVERYONE you have just said. I was JUST saying this to my dh that WE are social drinkers. We rarely drink and when we do we NEVER have 10 drinks :0 We just went out this weekend and I think he had 2 beers (maybe 3) and I had 4 drinks (in a 4 hour period).

I think they will live with more than just guilt. Her brother will be living without his 3 beautiful little girls. Her husband will be living without his daughter and a son who will be scarred for life.
Somehow I believe that if they knew about her problems, they are going to live their lives with horendous guilt and the knowledge that they may have been able to prevent the destruction of their families and other innocent families.
This story makes me so sick to my stomach.

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in
I one of the papers it said that the brother and husband seemed "surprised" when informed about the toxicology results. I also find in interesting that the police have been really laxed in interviewing the family. The officer commented that his conversations with the family have been "liimited" and they are trying to give them space to grieve.

The term social drinker disturbs me because it's so vague. She certainly doesn't seem like one, whatever that means. I know a few people who claim to be social drinkers, but their habits don't fit with my understanding of what that iis.

I haven't heard... but I think they said he was expected to live.
He is going to have more than just the physical scars, he is going to be emotionally scarred from growing up without a mother, hearing stories of what his mother did, and from being in the car and experiencing that horrible wreck.

I really hope that he has amnesia to what happened... and that he doesn't remember the horror leading up to the crash...

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in
I just read that the husband, Daniel, has retained Dominic Barbara as his criminal defense attorney, who will be giving a press conference tomorrow at 1 pm.
just to be clear, the police and Westchester DA haven't said anything about prosecuting anyone.
ETA: I posted this not so anyone would infer any sense of guilt or attribute that to Mr. Shuler. I posted this to let you know that he has a lawyer, who will be giving a press conference, and who will hopefully shed some light onto any one of the hidden aspects of this story.

Wow! Criminal defense attorney? My quesiton is - why does he feel he needs that- if they haven't even mentioned prosecuting anyone.
This story just gets more and more messed up every day...

I heard on news 12 this morning the 3 men's families are asking to have charges pressed
I would assume against the husband or brother
in nice in theroy - but I am not sure it's really possible
ETA- I don't think it's so far fetched to retain a lawyer at this point

I heard that too. The brother has releases his first statement:
"In all the uncertainly and speculation as to how this accident occurred, this is the absolute last thing that we ever would've expected," said the statement, read in Floral Park today by Stephen Spagnuolo, Jackie Hance's brother.
"We would never knowingly allow our daughters to travel with someone who might jeopardize their safety," the statement said. "Because we have never known Diane to be anything but a responsible and caring mother and aunt, this toxicology report raises more questions than it provides answers for our family."

I don't think so either. things are just TOO FUNKY in this case.
there really is no way to prove what he knew of his wife. a piss test for pot probably wouldn't render anything at this point. they could take and test a strand of his hair, which tests positive for pot long after a piss test does...but not sure how conclusively they could say he smoked with her THAT day, vs. he is an occassional pot smoker.
either which way, I can't say that I blame the families of the 3 male drivers.
