Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
stealing. wrong.
but, i have opened a small box of animal crackers or goldfish for my 2 year old. of course I pay for whatever I give him at check out.
i figure a snack in the supermarket is worth my own sanity as well as the rest of the shoppers/employees. Yes, shame on me for not coming prepared

It's not. It's stealing if the person does not pay for it. The OP was clear that she didn't know in this instance whether the person paid for it.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
The hilarious thing about this post is that the hypothetical banana-taker would not be able to win no matter what she did--
If she gives the banana (or some other food from the store) to her kid, she's looked on as a thief, regardless of whether she paid for it.
If she brings her own snack for the kid, you'll still hear from the contigent who feel that it's rude and gross to eat in a store, period. Someone would inevitably create a post about it.
If she doesn't give her kid any food, and just lets him scream, then you hear that she's rude and selfish for being disruptive to other shoppers, and a bad mom as well for teaching her child to expect a snack while shopping. This would be a popular topic on the childfree board.
So what does the mom do? As much as we'd like to, we can't leave the kid home alone (UNLIKE DOGS, but that was thoroughly covered already in the other post )

And if she leaves her DC home with a sitter, then she isn't spending enough time with DC, and the sitter is raising her kids....

i think this is wrong. there are other things you can give your child in a supermarket that you don't pay for based on weight.

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
I may get yelled at but I have so many thoughts on this since I worked for a supermarket for years. The problem is you may pay for the merchandise but MANY don't. I can't tell you how many people steal from supermarkets and to them its not a big deal since its a banana or a bunch of grapes but it adds up. People see people open up boxes, eat produce and don't know your paying for it so they think its okay to do it as well. It also makes it hard for security to pin point who is stealing and not stealing.
As a bakery worker: Parents would open up boxes of cookies in the bakery to eat out of and close them up like nothing happened. Not buying the package mind you! I have seen parents open up stuff and put it on the shelf when the kid is done because they didn't want to pay for it. Or people biting down on chestnuts to test them before buying (gross.) It happens! They see others do it and think "oh not a big deal" and so forth. I just feel its best to just feed your child before - plus trust me the supermarket is not a sanitary place, especially produce since it sits near the garbage compactor (every store i worked in produce depo is right next to the garbage) so your just better of waiting until your home.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
That is technically stealing if she didnt pay for it. I am guilty of "stealing" olives from the olive bar but only if I am buying them. I put some extra in the container and eat them as I shop but I am only eating maybe 5 and paying for the rest.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
The guy in front of me online at target this weekend was actually going to town on a bag of chips. He was literally shoving handfuls into his mouth, dropping some on the ground in the process & yes, I judged him & gave him a disgusted look. Yeah, he would have paid for the food but he was still a freaking pig.
Generally, I am not a fan. I've never grabbed anything from a store & eaten it myself or have given DC to eat but I wouldn't say I would never do it. But, we would have to be not feeling well in order to pick something up & eat a store & I would make sure not to leave a mess. Otherwise, we can wait til we get home.

What I don't understand is outside of the taster displays in Costco, etc....why it's so necessary to eat it right then? I'm sure I'm not the only one who can wait to leave a supermarket or store before peeling my banana or opening a snickers bar.

I think its wrong - eat before you go shopping and bring snacks from home for your hungry toddler.
I'm not a fan of super market eating in any form - i don't care if you're going to pay for it. You're there to shop not snack, its not your home.
How hungry can you be that you can't wait until you at least get in the car??

I know I can wait, but apparently my 2 year old has other ideas. So it's either- feed her then and there or listen to blood curdling screams and watch her throw herself on the ground while I try to buy meat and produce. I chose the former.
ETA- I also did have a period in my life where I had low blood sugar and would get to the point of almost passing out if I didn't eat right then and there. I would try to keep my sugar levels steady by eating throughout the day, but sometimes the day would get away from me, etc and I'd end up in a supermarket feel shaky. In that case I'd eat the granola bar or whatever I had in my purse- rather than pass out in the frozen food aisle.

My kids eat grapes from that bag that I am going to buy when I am in the store. Honestly I never have given it a second thought, nor have I ever asked the cashier to add additional weight for the 10 grapes that were eaten by a hungry toddler so I guess I am that person.... o well.

Sorry, but I wash ALLLLLL of my fruit. Sorry if everyone does not believe in doing that.
You wash banannas after you peel them or before? If after, dont they get mushy? I always assumed it wasnt necessary since I was removing the skin.

I agree Some people really need to get a life. Seriously it's sad.
I would not even notice someone eating in a store or giving their baby a banana
I have a 2 yo and he will get whatever he wants to keep him happy As for being prepared, you are in a grocery store! No need to be prepared ! The OP among other people must be plain bored silly

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
meh Bigger things to worry about in life as far as I'm concerned. Who cares what this lady is doing or not doing or could be doing or is thinking of doing? She gave her kid a banana. End of the world? Meh. Wrong or Right? WHO KNOWS? Its not like we could see the contents of her basket at check out.
Now what worries me are the people who stalk another. haha I gave AJ a cherry from a free tasting bin. She got messy so I turned around to get some napkins and found another woman following us. I ignored her at first, then got AJ cleaned up. Of course she loudly declared she wanted another cherry. Odd that woman was still around. So we walked back up front to the taste tester. Get another cherry, turn around and don't ya know who I see? Ok now I'm tickled. So I stand perfectly still and straight and stare her down. She has the decency to look down. I walked over with my daughter in tow "Do I know you?" .. ummm no "Oh did you think we were someone you knew?" ... (my way of letting her out of it)... umm no "Oh, well I'm sorry, for a moment I swore you were stalking us - can't ever be too careful these days" then walked away. Ugh
Its a cherry, its free, buzz off.
I pay for the stuff my kid eats. I pay for the water I open up. I am very capable of telling my child no if I feel the need to. If I don't its because I don't want to. Personally a banana is a mess, sticky gotta help with the peel, at 2 no way - choking hazard, etc, so it wouldn't happen for me. But this mom did what she did. I am SURE I've broken PLENTY mama golden rules.
So as I stand in my glass home I'm not willing to toss a stone over a banana.
But that's me.
On a side note, I think self scan aisles should have a discount. No need for overhead if I'm doing all the work. LOL

I taste the grapes before buying them. If they suck, I keep trying other bunches until i find a good one.
No one has come after me yet. Perhaps I should turn myself in?

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
I am usually the first to see a gray area but in this case, I'm not understanding what is debatable here.
Eating a banana and not paying = stealing Eating a banana and paying = FINE, especially if it's a toddler we're talking about.
Posted by Nifheim
It also makes it hard for security to pin point who is stealing and not stealing.
I used to work undercover loss prevention so this point I can understand. I can see how it would be difficult to keep track of who ate a banana and who didn't. However, I think it's part of the nature of working loss prevention in a grocery store or any other store where the merchandise tends to be smaller.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
I always packed fruit snacks, cheerios or goldfish in my bag along with a juice box whenever i'm taking my kids to the grocery store with me..it's just easier that way. i did give ryan some grapes once because i forgot to bring food and he was literally sobbing that he was hungry, lol...i told the cashier that he had about 10 grapes and could add extra to the weight but she shook her head and said "nah, you're fine but thanks for telling me, most people don't!"

Was it me you saw in the Stop N Shop? Bc I do this ALL the time, But i also get a bigger banana and bring it to the register and YES I DO HAVE THEM WEIGH THE SINGLE BANANA TWICE! I would rather ppl judge me for having my kid eat a banana in the store(without knowing if im paying or not) if its going to avoid a meltdown!

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
My kids sit in the car part of the shopping cart and "help" me by holding some of the groceries. Over the weekend, G. husked a corn and started eating it. Don't worry....I paid for it.
They always eat something when we're shopping and I always pay. Unless you know for certain that someone isn't paying, I'd assume they plan to pay.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-
Its too funny that you posted this bc my DD loves bananas and hungry or not she sees them in the store and screams for them. Unfortunately for me, my Stop & shop has them in more than one location so multiple times throughout the store I need to prevent a banana tantrum. So far I have not given her a banana bc I was always concerned about the weight and not being able to figure out the price of what she ate, so I try to find some other boxed or bagged snack nearby that will keep her quiet. She eats that and then i pay for it at the end.
