Over the weekend, G. husked a corn and started eating it.

OMG this cracked me up! Chat Icon

But I mean, really, you didn't WASH the corn after he husked it? SHAME ON YOU! Chat Icon

I think what people don't realize is- when it comes to toddlers, you will do ANYTHING as a parent to keep them from having a meltdown in a store.
Anything. I'd give my daughter a steak if it would keep her quiet! Chat Icon

I taste the grapes before buying them. If they suck, I keep trying other bunches until i find a good one.

No one has come after me yet. Perhaps I should turn myself in?

I'm sorry, but that's gross. I wash my fruit before consuming it, but the thought of someone else eating from the bag before I buy it skeeves me. Even if it's just one grape.

agreed. i DO NOT want a bunch that someone's hand had been in. feel them through the bag, if they are firm, they are good. no need to taste them Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have done this, but I will bring 1 extra banana with me and have her at that weight to my bill and then have her put it back.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

Truthfully I do the same thing.

Everytime we go to Stop and Shop DD MUST have a banana..its her thing when we food shop. I take a single banana weigh it, print the sticker and scan it, then she eats it. I pay for it bc it is scanned and I dont think that is any different that the mom that opens a bag of goldfish and scans it at the end.
IMO

In Trader Joes we put the peel to the side and I tell the cashier to charge me for an extra banana. I have even gone so sar as to ask the stck people if it was ok that we she eat the banana ahead of time and they 1000% of the time say of courseChat Icon

The only time I wont let DD do it is in the Cross Island Store in Lynbrook where the bananas are bagged ahead of time and then I feel like it is wrong to open the bag and take a banana out of it. (even if I am buying the bag).

But in the other instances I ALWAYS pay for it. We dont steal a banana.

The scanner eliminates that problem.

What I don't understand is outside of the taster displays in Costco, etc....why it's so necessary to eat it right then? I'm sure I'm not the only one who can wait to leave a supermarket or store before peeling my banana or opening a snickers bar.

This is exactly my issue too. I mean, aren't there always times when we (including kids) are hungry but have to wait a little while to eat? I can't really think of a good example - maybe in church or something? Grocery shopping generally doesn't take hours on end, so I just can't imagine it being necessary to eat right then and there. Excluding cases of medical necessity, of course.

Ding ding ding!
Tell a 2 year old that they have to wait to eat.
See how far that gets you when you need to get your grocery shopping done.

I see ntohing wrong with this cause you are paying for it.

It is when people don't pay that I think it is wrong.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

I don't do it, I bring my own snacks when I have to take the kids to the store with me.

I don't have and issue with it, I wouldn't think anything of it if I saw someone do it in the store, however I just don't understand eating something you haven't paid yet. I know everyone is saying they have the clerk ring up another one, etc etc. But at a grocery store you usually pay before you eat. It's not a restaurant. But again, I don't really care. It's not my grocery store.

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

I would stay away from a banana because DS would make a mess but if he did want one, I would pay for it.

He does usually get a free piece of cheese from the deli counter if we stop there.

I feel weird bringing snacks into a store that sells food so I usually open something if he's with me. It allows me to get my shopping done quickly and easily.

I do have to say though I was taken aback one day at the deli counter when this man was sending his kids around to different areas for free samples (that had to be asked for, it wasn't set up like the free samples at Costco) and had to taste each type of deli meat/cheese he bought. He practically got a free sandwich and cookies from the bakery for dessert. I was especially annoyed because he was taking forever while my toddler was with me - luckily he was in a patient mood that day.

I eat in the supermarket. Not weighable items, but sometimes I will open up a drink or a bag of chips. Honestly, sometimes my blood sugar gets low and I just can't wait.

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

I was in stop and shop yesterday with DS. We were almost finished and he spots cookies in the bakery area (the ones made by them, packaged and priced already in their plastic containers) I take a container off the shelf with FULL intentions of buying it and start to walk away. DS wants a cookie so I stop, maybe 2-3 aisles away open the container and give him a cookie. As I am closing it some random woman goes "I hope you plan in paying for that cookie!" I said "did you not see me put the package back into my cart to buy it" and she says "but its missing a cookie, make sure you tell them so they charge you for it" I told her to MYOB and walked away.

I felt like saying.....Ummmmm, hello dumb ass, they're prepackaged and pre priced. I could eat all of them and it is still going to be the same price!!

I do it at the time at Trader Joe's. Every time my kids see those bananas they MUST have one. Chat Icon

I let them have one each, keep the peels and have the casher charge me for 2 extra bananas. NO big deal!

Same here! My kids love bananas and when they see them they want to eat them. I don't see the big deal with it. Those of us who do it, are usually honest enough to pay for it. I don't see where the judgement comes in if you don't know if they paid for it or not!

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

I just saw this the other day. A mom was at the bakery area where the bagels, muffins, rolls, donuts, and cookies are. It's where you place them in your own bag or box. Anyway, she bought something from that area, and I see her with a young son and as I approach the area, her son is calm, and she has a cookie (pay by the lb) just loose giving it to her son to eat.

I have also witnessed many people with grapes doing this. They take a bag of grapes then continue their shopping throughout the store eating as they go along. Again, pay by the lb.

I have no problem with people wanting to eat a bag of something if they bring it to the register and pay for it. What bothers me are the people I mentioned above. This was not Stop and Shop so no scanners, so they clearly do not plan on paying for what they eat while they shop. It is STEALING.

What an asshole she was.

This is why I do almost all my shopping at trader joes.

Everyone who shops and works there is so nice
Mine has a little cafe you can sample items, they give the kids stickers at the register, always offer to help carry out my bags, ask how my day is going. The customers are just as nice. I've had nice conversations with people where either Im reccomending something or they are.

It's just such a nice atmosphere and I always leave in a great mood. I think it attracts nicer, non judgemental peaceful people, both as customers and employees.

Also no one texts at the register. Or complains about their job.

eta: my baby threw boxed pineapple that was cut up to be eaten, and it opened and spilled onto the floor. I brought it to register intending to pay for it, as he damaged it and it couldn't be resold, and the nice cashier said not to worry about it.
