Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!
I just got the guide from the camp. It adds up to almost $300 for the minimum suggested (8 week program, 6 hours a day). This is my first time through. Is that typical?

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!
I worked as a camp counselour about 15 years ago or so and thinking it was so expensive. Then again, I was the counselor so I didn't mind. LOL!
Yes... I know it's crazy how many tips... the kids counselor, art pple, sport pple, swim instructors, etc. Although you tip how you want. Ask your DC what their fav activities were and who they really liked.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!
yes. I was shocked last year at the amount of tips they 'suggested' but as I've learned, it's fairly typical...
This year I think I gave about 150 in tips b/c my son only had ONE counselor as opposed to like 3, last year.

Which campdoyou go to?
We got to Camp Kenwal in Melville and it will cost us $210... I thought that is very reasonable.. That is for 5 days a week 9-4..
My friendsat other camps are getting suggested tips of up to $500

This is for DAY camp not OVERNIGHT camp? I have never gotten a "suggestion" for a tip and have never seen anyone give tips or gifts.

Sorry but that's ridiculous!! It's a camp. The counselors get paid an hourly wage which I am sure is more than that of a waitress. For the camp to suggest tips is so unprofessional IMO. If the parents feel they got great service then it should be their prerogative. I would not appreciate getting a recommend tip schedule.

Well three of the counselors for her group are 14 year old "counselors in training" who I'm sure got paid next to nothing for running around in the 90 degree heat all day. They clearly earned something from me... Its the swim ones that kill me, who I agree are probably paid hourly and then every kid at the camp is supposed to tip them. They must make five times what the regular counselors do.

I pay so little for camp that you would think they WOULD suggest a tip. It is ridiculous that these camps (these are ones that charge like $5,000/child, right?) are asking for MORE money :0

This is very typical for Long Island camps. Trust me for everyone that I know who lives out of state says the same thing that you do.
to tell you the truth-- it is worth every penny to me because my son had the summer of his life.He had a fantastic summer and is a completely different child for the better...

But they are 14, not 24 or 34 who are living on their own and are paying rent or mortgage. I am sure the paycheck is sufficient for a 14 yr. old.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!
I'm not against tipping or gifts I'm just appalled that the camp gives you a tipping guide. I think families should 1) Give what they are inclined to give based on the service they felt they got from various individuals and 2) what they can afford. Families shouldn't be made to feel bad if they can't shell out another $300 for tips.

From being an ex CIT and counselor back in the day... it was the best job ever. Seriously!! Your outside all day, get to play, go on trips, etc. Oh, and the CIT's do get paid nothing, but they get breaks and they go on CIT trips so it's not so bad. Like you said... the "specialty" counselors gets ridiculous, but I loved them b/c when I was a counselor you take the kids to arts n crafts and they would teach then to sports and the sports counselors would take over, swim and so on. I had lots of lanyard bracelets and a great tan. LOL Boy, I wish I could still do it.

I was a camp counselor for 7 or 8 years at a day camp on LI. When I was a CIT, I did not get paid at all. I worked for the tips.
Once I got a paycheck, it was very little, way below minimum wage. I think I maybe got $100 per week. The camps are able to get away with this b/c the tips supposedly make up for the paycheck.

I asked the camp before I signed up if counselors receive tips. They informed me that tips are suggested but it is up to the parent..
This question was asked to every camp I looked at and I looked at all of the camps mentioned above posts.. You have to do your homework...

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!
I too have had at least one child at camp for the last 7 years (for the last 3 years its been 2) and have always received a tip chart. But, as Hill and Ron said, I knew what I was getting into before hand.
I believe all Long Island day camps, at least the ones I'm familiar with, do this. I also know that this is a local phenomenon and my friends and relatives outside of the northeast are horrified by the idea of a tip chart.
My kids have had an unbelievable summer and in two years my oldest will be a CIT and eventually a counselor, so I'm hoping to get some of my money back

I do not agree. I was a counselor for a number of years at a couple of the camps mentioned in this thread. I was in my 20's when I worked there. The first summer I worked, I got paid $1000. $1000 for 8 weeks, 8-4, no breaks. If you do the math, that works out to about $3/hr. THese counselors spend the entire day with your children it is NONSTOP. A waitress takes your order and serves you food for maybe an hour or two tops, and gets a 15-20% tip. A hairdresser works on you for an hour and gets a 20% tip. But the people responsible for taking care of your children all day do not deserve a tip? I do not understand the logic in this.
If I did not get tips then the summer would not have been worth working.
ETA: yes the camps are expensive, but they are not asking you to pay THEM more money, they are suggesting an amount to give the counselors. Also keep in mind it is a SUGGESTION. And really, if you have $5000 to spend on sending your kid to one of these camps, you don't have an extra $100 to give to the counselor? Sorry, I don't get it.
