Just read this: Nurse asked CDC before she took commercial flight
I was concerned about Ebola earlier this month, but now I'm really worried that our fed g'ment has no clue how to protect us from this.
Should also add my mom is a nurse and usually the voice of reason during many health worries I've been through - and she is genuinely concerned about how this is being handled. Chat Icon

This is what I just heard. She called and they had no concerns about her flying.

I cannot believe they are this stupid! How was there any questions? They couldn't try harder to purposely infect us if they tried.

I don't really understand how people are NOT concerned about this. Do you trust this ass-clown of a president to protect us from this? I think you'll be changing your tune in a few weeks...

Look.. I can't STAND obamass. I think he's a blithering idiot and worthless. I feel he has caused more pain and misery in this country than the brainwashed country wants to believe. I feel like his terms as president have made our country weaker, less respected and an overall mess

that said..
Its a virus.

Unless you want to blame Obama for not locking down our country ahead of time and Duncan then could never come to the US (which time and time again I said would be impossible, never mind hindsight is impossible to at on).

The government (BOTH SIDES) had very little to do with bringing a deadly virus to the US other than transporting two sick individuals back to America who are now CURED and because they are cured they were able to HELP the first nurse by offering a blood transfusion, not otherwise possible if we'd left them in Africa.

I disagree with mocking those who are sincerely panicked and mostly keep my mouth shut other than to offer reassurances or information to counter. But as an Obama-hater I think his opponents can do better than blaming Ebola fear on him.

I am not concerned .. not because I think the government has ANYTHING to do with it one way or another, but because its the MEDIA who's feeding the panic. The family he was visiting here hasn't been admitted. Nurses broke protocol because they didn't know the protocol and more importantly they are extraordinarily brave individuals who are generally used to handling bodily fluids without thought.

I am not handling or exposed to the bodily fluids of anyone showing signs of Ebola. These two nurses were not only around him but HANDLING him in very close proximity. That is not likely to happen to anyone else in the general public.

Hospitals are understaffed because medical fraud is rampant. Medical Mal is ridiculously expensive. Because medical field is reeling from ACA because the costs to be a doctor well out weights the salary. Nurses are hard to come by trained for trauma for the same reasons.

I am not concerned because there's nothing to be concerned about yet.

Food for thought... none of the nurses handling the other two cured Americans have been diagnosed... and I think its because they knew they were coming and were properly prepared. These two nurses were thrust into this.

Thank you Xelindrya...you brought up some valid points and you did not mock me/roll your eyes at me Chat Icon , so I will respond to you and clarify my earlier post.

Do I think we should be in a state of panic, building bomb shelters and cancelling Christmas? No. Do I think we should be concerned about this very serious, deadly disease, and educating ourselves about it? Yes.

And I do not blame Obama for Ebola coming to the U.S. (Enterovirus 68, maybe, but that's another topic for another day), but I do not agree with you that air restrictions should not be made. Eff being politically correct...he should be putting our citizens first for once.

Sorry to anyone I offended by calling Obama an ass-clown, but I have no faith in the man who, only a month ago, assured us that Ebola coming to the U.S. would be very unlikely. Well, it's here now.

I do remember seeing it on the news in the 90's. I was a kid and my dad assured me it was in a very remote area of the world. Then, right, it died out in that small village. ..because it was CONTAINED in that village.

And what is wrong with that guy? People like that are why I'm not confident this won't spread Chat Icon

Well, if he gets Ebola and didn't put a single hand on her, then there is something bigger going on. Especially considering that is her covered in yellow plastic.

Ebola and the news

I have been in the dental field since 1987( height of the aids epidemic), back then we treated patients with active tuberculosis in dental offices and some dentists were still not wearing gloves regularly. Many older dentists, particularly oral surgeons are hepatitis positive from working without gloves for many years.
What concerns me about Ebola is the WHO is recommending double gloving which is a contradiction of the universal standard of infection control. For almost 20 years in dentistry double gloving( with the exception of cotton liners for people with skin problems) has been prohibited during direct patient care because it's discriminatory. The WHO, OSHA and the decided back then that dental professionals are safe from any communicable disease using one pair of gloves that are changed at approximate intervals and discarded of properly. Face shields are an acceptable but not required piece of equipment, we can choose to wear goggles. Masks and appropriate garments are always required.
This new safety protocol for this disease and the fact that your own skin offers you no natural protection is alarming to me.
I have been googling for days and calling manufacturers, I have not been able to get a concrete answer on whether or not our common dental disinfection solutions kill the Ebola virus. Most of what I have read though not from completely credible sources says no. I have read a lot about using bleach, however our dental equipment cannot be regularly cleaned with bleach, it will become damaged.
I'm not panicking because I feel I have already survived several major health epidemics in my profession. however I'm positive that the people that are supposed to be in the know don't really know and that is what is scary to me.

Silly question
May have been asked already in this thread
Is it a HIPPA violation that the nurse's name is out there in the press?

This article definitely makes me very concerned that other patients were put at risk, especially if there was chaos. I am sure the nurses had some virus particles on them somewhere, while caring for other patients in the ER.

I am not so much scared of getting Ebola exactly but what's going to happen to our country/government. Obama already signed off giving himself the privledge to declare Martial law. So he proactively ALREADY signed off anticipating a serious issue. Yet did NOTHING to protect us from this issue.

If you are unclear Martial law revokes all of our rights. Our right to bear arms, we can be forced into mandatory quarantines, forced vaccines, our homes can be taken away from us.

I agree. I'm less scared of actually contracting Ebola as I am of the nightmare that will ensue should Ebola cases start popping up all over the country.

I'm not exactly worried that we will be put under martial law, but this is already having an effect on the stock market and it's only a few cases in TX.

ETa: for example there is currently an air France plane in Madrid that's being held in quarantine bc a passenger is showing symptoms. I couldn't imagine being stuck on that plane indefinitely while they try to figure out if the person actually has Ebola. Total nightmare!!

Ebola and the news

The fact that there may be more cases in Dallas does not scare me or surprise me. Those two nurses were not the only ones seeing him. So, I would say this. The only ones infected are those who were with him during his most contagious state.

NO one in the ER both times has come back infected.
None of the family he was visiting

Just the medical care workers and yes, that does make sense. If one got infected, more probably will.

I heard this morning Frontier gave all of that plane's staff a paid 21 days off for isolation. Wanna bet they won't stay home.

It is only infectious when the symptoms are showing.

I so want this over already. I understand the panic but I don't buy into it.

Some guy was a teacher was on the plane AFTER that nurse and he's school is shut down and he's staying home for 21 days.

Dr. Gupta himself says banning flights won't stop it

Its only contagious when you are showing signs. Duncan was asymptomatic.. showing NO signs until he was finally admitted. No one else got sick while he wasn't.

Why the hell are ppl "self-monitoring" ?? If I thought I might have ebola I'd strap myself to a hospital bed and ask them to pump me full of every medication possible.

Anyone else find it weird that Duncans family so far is fine? Leads me to believe the disease becomes a lot more transmittable after the patient is really sick almost dying. Maybe it's not as contagious during the first few days of symptoms?

That's what they're saying. It becomes most contagious at the end of life bc it's transmitted through bodily fluids and more bodily fluids are secreted towards the end. Vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding.

Which would explain why even though he was showing some symptoms when he went to the ER the FIRST time, none of the staff from that visit got sick with it.

Yup and NO ONE in that ER is sick. How many people sat next to him near him or heaven forbid breathed the same air? How about THOSE nurses why aren't they sick yet, they were first exposed right? Maybe its because they weren't up in his face digging into his bodily fluids.

Then two days later.. TWO DAYS LATER he went in again.

And during those two days...
Imagine how many people may have sat in his chair that he sat in while he waited to be turned away that day, touched the same door handle he did... yet NONE are sick.

You need to be in direct physical contact. These nurses were not only in contact they were in contact during his most violent symptoms.

How many people who were in that ER those 3 days at any one given point then went home to see others. Yet none of them are sick. The family he was with those 3 days of being sick yet not violent ill have yet to show up positive. And we all know they stayed DAYS locked up in that apt with his sweat soaked bedding in the other room.
