I'm would not be comfortable with watering down formula or putting a newborn on a diet. That is just crazy! Babies need to eat. Just because your DS eats a lot now, doesn't mean he will continue when he gets older. My DS was always hungry. Now at 9 months, he doesn't really eat that much.

ALso, my niece was the fattest baby you have ever seen. She was short and chubby. (Very cute)! Now she is 5 and is so skinny.

my son is 6 weeks old. we just bumped him up to 4oz of breast milk/formula every 3 hours and sometimes when he asks for a bit more, we give it to him.

after that, we give him the pacifier. especially if he's tired. He just really likes to suck, and before we introduced the pacifier, he'd get more milk, either from bottle or breast, than maybe he really wanted or needed.

if you haven't introduced a pacifier yet, that could be an option for you. he may just have a very strong sucking reflex. I'll give Luce the pacifier until he makes it clear he wants the REAL deal.

This is what we did with both our DCs they were def needing to suck more than actually have the "food!" If they still screamed with the pacifier I knew it was hunger..but often it soothed them so I began to learn the diff in hunger/sucking cues!

I wouldn't worry. It's not like you are feeding him transfats. He's getting formula/breastmilk which is the most nutritional thing you can give your baby. He's just a hungry baby.

I agree. You can't overfeed a newborn. Chat Icon

Exactly! And I agree with the other girls--never ever water down formula. The water:formula ratio is set for a reason. Keep up the good work--he is growing nicely Chat Icon Many chubby babies turn out to be very thin adults. No worries Chat Icon
