As a graduate of the Syosset School District, DITTO!

As a graduate of the "prestigious" Commack school district, I also wholeheartedly agree!

Re: For anyone who can't find a decent-priced house in Suffolk....
I agree that it is the taxes that are making home ownership on LI elusive to us.
I am originally from Mass but I went to 2 very different school districts in high school
The first I went to was considered a "troubled" district, was quite large and comprised mostly of middle class and poverty level families (like if you mixed Bayshore and Brentwood together and made all the immigrants Asian instead of Hispanic, but the same problems with language barriers and no money). The second was a good district, but small, consisting of mostly middle and upper middle class families (think like West Islip)
I learned more in the "bad" district. I had less exposure to drugs in the "bad" district. When I transferred schools I was ahead of the students in the "good" district.I had less choices in courses to take at the "good" school. I slept through Honors level courses because I had already done the material 2 years prior. I saw all the "rich" kids using daddy's money to buy coke and rent motel rooms for huge drinking/drug parties. BTW, the kids doing the drinking/drugging were your "good" kids. The popular kids. The jocks. Not the "stoners" or the goth kids.
My brother graduated from the same "good" school and my cousin from the "bad" school 10 years after I did and nothing had really changed in either system. The drugs and partying were still rampant in the good school and nearly impossible to ignore. The "bad" school still offered more diverse classes and more opportunity for those who wanted to learn (this comes down to parenting).
I dunno, I don't know what my point is except that you can't really judge a book by it's cover. There are plenty of decent areas I see get bashed on all the time. You'd think people were suggesting folks buy in Wyandanch or CI. What is wrong with living in a DECENT working class neighborhood?
And let's not forget, today's "good" area can always become tomorrow's "bad" area and vice versa ;)

We find affordable houses all the time.... It's the taxes that are rough :/
I disagree with your view on school districts & could type a novel about it. But to keep it short, there types of friends/ people that I do not want my child exposed to. I know I can greatly minimize that exposure based on the school district I place my child in. I want to live in an area with educated professional families like my husband & myself. This way my child had a much higher likelihood to befriend children from similar upbringing to them. Your children's peers have a huge impact on them growing up.
High taxes are nothing when it comes to a school district for my child.
I live in Centereach. I have a masters degree and my husband is an engineer. What are you saying? You don't want your children exposed to people like us?
I live in Centereach also. I have my master's degree and I am a TEACHER. My DH makes double my salary. I have no problem sending my children to Middle Country.
I grew up in Kings Park and I had many friends that did not have a similar upbringing as me.
How offensive. I don't think I would want my children exposed to people as narrow minded as YOU.

that house looks great. I don't know the area but if I was frustrated by not finding a house over a certain period of time I would consider other areas. In fact, I did. I was keeping my search to the south shore in Bellmore, Merrick, Massapequa and Wantagh/Seaford.
I wouldn't look anywhere else until a realtor in Wantagh showed me Bethpage.
Lots of listings in our range and lots of choice..well we fell in love with our 80 year old tudor/farm/capeish house. Checked out the schools and found them to be very similar to the area we were originally looking in. Had a new kitchen and low taxes..done.
On another note, my nephew just moved into his dorm at Cornell. BIL is very well off and this kid wants for nothing but is very smart. He moved in with the best that money could buy. His roommate is from the Bronx, took the subway to his school everyday, raised by his dad I believe and moved with the bare minimums..
This has been a wake up call for our nephew, seeing that there are folks out there from other economic backgrounds but that doesn't make them bad people or dumb. He was totally humbled meeting this sick smart kid who has nothing.
To sum up, I think diversity is a good thing..Diversity meaning from different backgrounds generally, whether they are ethnic, economic or religious..etc.
Buy your house based on what you can afford in the best environment you can but that doesn't mean diverse neighborhoods lend themselves to bad outcomes for our kids.
ITA IMO diversity is what creates open minded people many times, its a great thing!

Re: For anyone who can't find a decent-priced house in Suffolk....
I went to school in a wealthy district......... and appreciated the experience in college getting to meet a more diverse crowd. You tend to forget when you're in that HS or small town zone, that there is a whole world out there! It was refreshing to meet "regular" people who weren't so vain and self-centered When I was in HS, the student parking lot was nicer than the teachers. It was SO sickening! I aspired to be the total opposite from most people I went to school with and I think that has served me well!!

Re: For anyone who can't find a decent-priced house in Suffolk....
School district issues aside, I think broadening your search to find more overall "affordable" towns is smart in many ways. If the prices in an area are pretty much out of your league, or kind of a reach for you budget-wise... that's going to be just the tip of the iceberg. You have to ask yourself, can I afford the whole lifestyle that's going to come with living in this area? Will my kids be the "have nots" in terms of having the same material things as their peers, going to the same $$$ camps and activities, etc. It might be better to live in a more economically middle-of-the-road area where you might fit in better and not feel poor by comparison.

I never figured this would cause an issue. I posted a beautiful house I saw myself , and the sellers have about 12 years of schooling each - they are both much "higher" than a nurse,
I dont understand what that means "higher than a nurse"
Please explain...

That house is very nice.
I work in one of the poorest parts of NYC and while I am grateful to be able to live in a good school district myself, I can tell you that many of my former students have gone on to excellent colleges and are successful and hard-working. It's not an area or even a school that determines a child's life.

I saw the point of your post and it's unfortunate that it took the turn that it did...I don't know where some people get their gall....I think your suggestion was a fair and realistic answer to the high taxes issues we have on LI..let's face it, it's not an easy place to live!

Re: For anyone who can't find a decent-priced house in Suffolk....
The truth is I read your OP and did UNDERSTAND what you meant and thought you were providing some good points....BUt the HIGHER THAN A NURSE comment i am sorry...got me....I still am confused as to what that means.
BTW. I am a nurse with 4 years of college, 3 years of graduate school (masters)...I have worked for a very prestigious institution in NYC with HIGH REGARDS to nurses. I consider myself a PROFESSIONAL...Before my DD was born I made the same or more money than some of my friends for worked for some very large corporations that some might think are "higher than a nurse".
The point..i think it is unfair and rude to label someone's profession less than someone else when you dont know all the facts.....that is IGNORANCE to me! and I am sorry...I am not a sensitive person...but I am highly offended to read a comment like that.

No offense to you but what you are saying is pretty much the same thing you feel the poster wrote as possibly insulting--just a different example. Money doesnt make the person.

Re: For anyone who can't find a decent-priced house in Suffolk....
It has always been amazing to me how many newlyweds/first time home buyers without large incomes expect to live in prestigious areas and even more perplexing is when people that do live in "better" towns expect that everyone can afford to as well.
I have said this before & I will say it again-Everyone has to start out somewhere. There are truly only a handful of places on LI that are actually dangerous or unsafe for families to live. There are plenty of areas that aren't as pretty, homes aren't as manicured & people sometimes are less educated or earn less money and lots of areas are FINALLY becoming more diverse. The "Location" thing drives me NUTS on this board. The last five years has proven that there are no guarantees in real estate and we have LIFers living in great towns in "upside down/under water" homes.
We currently live in Ridge. I'm proud to live in a school district that's not 98% white and has low income families. I'm even more proud of the teachers and administrators here that are able to graduate almost 90% of the students even though so many of them face challenges in their home lives that seem insurmountable. In my mind that is a far greater accomplishment than graduating 99% of students that have two parent families that speak English as their first language, have a mother & a nanny at home to care for them, a supportive environment at home with parents that are focused on the child's success, access to tutors & endless resources.
Interestingly our school budget never fails, even though we have the highest population of seniors in Suffolk county & plenty of people do struggle to make ends meet-somehow they all agree to do what's right for the kids. I regret not moving to this town sooner, because I raised my son in a much more affluent area-one that is considered very desirable around LIF and Newsday. Along with the education he got in school he also got hooked on drugs & he's now a 23 year recovering drug addict. I was class mother, involved in SEPTA & PTA for years, my son was involved in lots of school clubs sports & activities AND we lived in a "good town". Go figure. 4 kids from his graduating class have since died from drug related causes, more than I can count have been to rehab and at least 15 that I personally know of including my son have been convicted of drug related crimes. We moved in my son's senior year-2005 but he was allowed to continue there, and I've been told numerous times it is ten times worse now. I'm not blaming the town or school, I'm just reflecting on that fact that I could have lived in place that would have been much less of a struggle for me financially and although my son may have gone down the same road, perhaps he would not. Having a student parking lot filled with Escalades & BMWs was a big indicator of how wrong our idea of right is. The town is Oakdale in case you're wondering. So I consider myself to be someone that has a fair amount of first hand experience with raising children and how society & lifestyles play a role in it. I find the level of naivete to be alarming amongst LIers.
And in reponse to the home the OP listed, its really nice! Here are a few in my neighborhood that are very affordable.
Low taxes, full size house, needs a little TLC 2313021
Ready for a family 2293242
If you want to live on the water with no flooding issues, a private crystal clear lake 2293010
There ARE affordable places to live on LI if people are willing to accept realistic compromises based on what they can truly afford, and do what's right for YOUR family...not what people say to do!!!
