EBF for 1 year. My 1st Chat Icon I did, and I am currently close to 10 months with Chat Icon #2. I wanted to same for my Chat Icon , but I got very sick after having her and couldn't BF because of all the meds I had to take for months.

With Ds I had a very low milk supply so I lasted until 3 months. This time well see.... I hope my supply is better.

Re: For how long do you plan to/did you breastfeed?

I actually breastfed for 3 days and then pumped. When the milk came in I got engorged and pumping relieved that. I kept that up for 3 weeks until I had no more milk. I wanted to nurse for 1 year. Next child I don't plan to breastfeed at all. PPD was really bad, BFing stress didn't help and my medication isn't recommended for BFing.

Going on 21 +months for DS but planning to wean at least three months before DD comes bc I NEED by body to myself for a hot minute, or as to myself as I can be with one growing inside. Planned on at least a year but somehow just kept going, did not think I would go this long. We are down to twice a day now, sometimes once.

Re: For how long do you plan to/did you breastfeed?

I've read a year is great for baby and that was my goal for my first. However, the beginning was so rough with her and I revised my goal to a month, then two months, then three, then 6. It got easier after that first month but it was so much harder than anticipated! She weaned at 6.5 months.

My second nursed nearly the second after he came out. He had no issues at all. My goal was 6 months again and we made it to seven before he weaned. I was a SAHM with him and thought it would be no problem making it a year, but I think my milk production isn't fast enough for their taste at that age. They want instant gratification!

Whatever you can do is great for baby!

My "goal" was to just be successful at it and then I would take it from there...

Once I got past the first 8 weeks of LC's, home care nurse visits, etc. and my DS became a "pro" at it (and the pain went away and it became so easy!!!) My goal was 1 year...but it was soooo convenient, so healthy for him (he was a premie 36w 6lbs.) and he doubled is weight by 2 months old and I was saving a TON of money ($4-5,000)

After all was said and done, I stopped nursing at 20 months only because I started another IVF cycle and wasnt really comfortable taking those meds and nursing...

This baby#2 my plan is for at least 2 years, maybe 3...we will see how it goes :)

Good Luck, dont give up!!!!!!

As a BTDT, I can tell you what you "plan" and what happens can be very different. I think it is best to go into the desire to breastfeed with an open mind and see how you and your baby do with it. For me, DD was an awesome latcher, lousy sucker and I had a supply issue. My "plan" to EBF was out the window the minute they took her away from me (post c0section) to the nursery and gave her formula due to low blood sugar. No one asked me, just DH who didn't know any better. After all that I intended to do a combo of formula and breast milk until I wne back to work at 12 weeks pp, we made it 8 weeks. I did what I could and we're both just great!

I don't really have a plan. I am going to try BFing and if the baby takes then I will continue until I just don't anymore. Currently I'm not working so it's hard to plan around that. I also will be working in the construction field and don't feel comfortable pumping if/when I am working. So right now it's just, try and see what happens.

I just want to add...that BF is WORK, a LOT of work... it takes time and if you educate yourself on it first, talk to your dr. about it, ask questions, learn techniques, etc. it will make it easier on you, less stressful and your chances of being successful at it are greater...

Being a BTDT EBF for almost 2 years these are the best tips I got/learned that I will pass on that I know work...

***Its QUALITY of BM not the quantity (dont get caught up in the amt. of oz you pump- some people react to the pump much better than others, what you pump is NOT a good indication of how much your baby is getting, babies are more efficient feeders and your body knows the difference!!!
***SKIN TO SKIN helps you produce Prolactin
***YOUR BODY WILL MAKE EXACTLY WHAT YOUR BABY NEEDS (its natural for our bodies to do this...
***you Cannot compare oz. of BM to oz. of formula
***8oz of water before you nurse, while nursing and after nursing keeps your supply consistant and baby less gassy
***eating 16 almonds/walnuts a day will increase the Omega 3s in your BM thus making your hind milk a lot fattier
***Nipple to chin at least 3 times before latching the baby to ensure a wide mouth latch
***Baby ONTO the boob (treat your boob like its a hamburger for the best latch)
***If mommy isnt comfortable, neither is baby
***water, water, water, water, water, water, water, water :)
***DONT GIVE UP
***try not to introduce a pacifier/bottle for the first 40 days if possible but if you have to its not a big deal it wont change much
***I always suggest nursing on ONE SIDE per feeding especially if you need to build a supply up for going back to work...
ex. Nurse right side (pump remainder of right and pump left side 8min.)
Nurse left side (pump remainder of left and pump right side)
If you start this around 4-5 weeks you will most likely have a freezer full by the time you go back to work at 10-12 weeks.
***Keep a log...I have a log that I created that I give to everyone I know as a gift if they "plan" on nursing...it takes a lot of the guess work out of it...Id be happy to email it to you (or anyone else who wants to see it)
***EBF babies "typically" eat every 2-2.5 hours in the first few weeks and then cluster feed (every hour) during growth spurts (those times really suck) count your time from when you STARTED feeding
ex. 2pm start...next feeding you should start latching the baby on around 4:15-4:20 --- a hungry baby is harder to latch on bc they are starving and get frustrated--- nursing for them is hard work, it takes effort on their part...bottles for them are easy so if you give a bottle more often then not, they will not nurse as well...

Hope this info helps and if you have any questions Id be more than happy to help! FM me...(Im not a certified LC but have helped many of my GF with it :)

I am sorry to say that this isn't true for everyone. No matter what I did, I NEVER had enough to properly nourish my baby with breastmilk alone. It was mostly due to PCOS and an a-hole of an OB who won't entertain my questions about PCOS and breast milk supply. I found out too little too late what I could have done differently. I just really have an issue with such blanket statements. I didn't not work at it, it just never happened.

...I apologize if I offended, that statement was based on what I was told by professionals which I failed to add they said that 3% of women either due to medical or physical reasons cannot BF... Yes, PCOS can have an adverse effect on your prolactin levels hence creating a supply issue...

For the most part, any statement I made above is not for "all the women in the world" but just tips I found helpful and learned through my journey...

I bf DD until 15 months - that was when I got pregnant with #2. Hoping to go until at least 12 months with this one.

I agree, my sister tried to BF for months, when that didn't work she tried to exclusively pump. She never made any milk. So this certainly isn't true for everyone.

I busted my butt trying to BF for 3 weeks but my milk never came in. I did have an emergency C section and DD was in the Nicu for the entire stay at the hospital but other than that I had no physical/medical reason for my milk not coming in. I worked with a few Nurses, a LC and my OB but nothing worked. I was extremely upset about it. There are always exceptions to the rules and gross generalizations like this added a lot of stress during an already stressful time and made me feel much worse.

I posted after this post stating " this is what I was told" and there are certainly exceptions to the statement....circumstantial, medical and physical...

DD is 13 months.. and she still gets BM mixed with whole milk. I have a stash that should last about a month after I completely stop expressing milk Chat Icon
