Freddy update

Not good. Northshore didn't take him. It's the memory issues. I hear they are one of the hardest places to get into. So now we are sending his info out to other sub acute facilities in hopes that they will take him. He's making good progress and the insurance company is reviewing him week to week now which means they are keeping a close eye on him and when they want to discharge him. He's not ready to go home yet but maybe one of the subacutes can help. We are sending his file out to a bunch of them. If he gets accepted then I will go check it out.

Empire does have the right to stop paying if they feel he's gone as far as he can go. It may come down to a fight.

Mom and dad's stuff won't get here until first week of Oct. We are not even ready for him until then. 3 weeks. I hope we can get him somewhere or I hope that Empire still pays to keep him at Jamaica until then.

On a good note, we found a cary carrier and we rented the condo!

Gotta go to work now, but I will be on later.

I'm sorry for the mixed news. At least there is some progress but I do know the most draining part is getting the care for Freddy and fighting the insurance company... UGH... I've BTDT and still have nightmares over it... it's not easy.



If you need to consider another place I can give you the name of my father's acute rehab place. It's on LI, Northshore, Western Suffolk. At the time, they were far and away the best place. They had some very severely brain damaged and physically handicapped people there. FM if you want the name. I swear, they taught my father to walk again and I don't think every place would have been able to.

I admire your patience and dedication. You brother and parents are really lucky to have a loving sister/daughter like you.

I hope Empire gives Freddy the time he deserves and it doesn't come to a battle. But he certainly does have the best coach one could hope for.

Keep fighting Susan - I know it's hard - you must feel completely drained, and angry that this is all on your shoulders, but you are doing a tremendous mitzvah. Think of all the Freddy's in the world who have no one fighting for them

I am so sorry you are going thru this. Keep up the faith and try to stay strong even though it is hard right now.
Freddy has rights if they try to not pay for him to stay in, you can fight them , that may buy some time until you get him into where he needs to be.

Susan I am so sorry NorthShore didn't work out for Fred.
Hang in there. You will find another facility for him! You are a wonderful sister to be fighting as hard as you are for your brother. He's lucky to have you.

On to the good news in this post. That's great that your parents were able to rent the condo. I'm sure that's a huge relief for everyone!
I'm also happy to hear you found a carrier for the car. Sounds like 2 less things off your "to do list"

I'm sorry to hear that he didn't get into North Shore.

hopefully he'll get accepted somewhere comparable so that he can get the help and therapy that he needs.

thank you all for the kudos. I can't see any other way to be with this situation. I don't know who could give up and let him become the government's problem. Our attorney says that people do that. Horrendous.

We have had incredibly good luck so far and things have worked out to this point. I'm hoping it continues.

One of these subacutes will take him. They have to. I just hope it's a decent one that's not too geriatric.

There's a place in Rego Park that Jamaica refers a lot of people to. Hopefully, they will accept him.

This is just nuts!

eta: it's a 3-9 month program which really could be great for him. It would also give us time to prepare for him coming home and not rush Mom and Dad.

I also found out that the TBI beds at both Northshore and St. Johnsland are in short supply and they take people within their own system first. That could be a big reason they turned him down. They don't need a challenging case when they can easily fill the beds with others.
