I never do.. and that's probably because I never go in just to buy one thing so I would need to schelp 15 bags with me every time to the store.. ugh lol

the only time I've EVER seen anyone with a bag is at any food store in NYC.. but in LI? never

I would need at least 20 of those bags for all the groceries I buy in one trip.
No way is it practical for me...

same here - too many groceries

Never seen ANYONE do it.

But I've considered getting the S&S ones. I would need a bunch though.

Right now, I reuse all the plastic bags I get from the store for disposing of dirty diapers (even worse for the environment Chat Icon ) so I don't really want to switch yet.

The other concern I have is cleanliness. Can the bags be washed? What if my chicken package (despite the fact that I put it in 2 plastic bags) leaks or something?

Yes- I was mine. The bottom is removable and you can wash it in the sink, and the bag goes in the washing machine (delicate cycle- or at least that's what I do).
Chicken goes ina regular plastic bag for me. I don't put the plastic bag in the green bag.

I do! Chat Icon I use the Stop and Shop green bags that were posted above. I have 3 regular and 3 insulated. They work great, you can fit much more into it than a plastic bag! I keep them in the back of my truck, and I always have them with me. They have definitely paid for themselves.

Last time I was in the store, loading groceries into my car, an older gentleman came over to me as he was headed into the store, and thanked me for "doing my part for the environment". It made me smile Chat Icon

What I fit in 10 plastic bags I can get in about 5 or 6 green bags.

Re: honestly - who brings their own bags to the grocery store?

I do!!!

I have the bags from Walbaums, they are big and easy to clean.

I have 4 of them and for me and my DH that's plenty. They hold more and are really easy to use, I leave them in my trunk so I have them whenever I shop and sometimes I forget to take them into the store, halfway through shopping I'll realize and get mad because those little plastic bags are such a pain to me now!!!

They were $1.00 each and I have even bought some for my 90 year old grandmother because she said it makes her shopping easier too.

wow, so I guess if you usually carry about 10 bags from the supermarket, do you buy say 5 or 6 of the green bags?

Probably more like 4. You really can fit so much- and you can overstuff bc you can carry them over your shoulder- they don't cut into your palms.

I do approximately $200 worth of grocery shopping every other week. I have 6 bags and only once did I need an extra plastic bag to fit all my stuff...

The green canvas bags hold so much MORE than the plastic bags. So you won't need as many as you think.

This is what I do too. I have about 5 green bags and can fit so much into them!

You're welcome Chat Icon . This is a big issue with me- I think everyone should give it a try.
Plus if I am going in for just a few things, I use the bag to carry my groceries while I shop. Though as I type, I realize that it may look like I am shoplifting. Chat Icon
I hate those baskets though.

Suggestion- why not have 4 or 5 green bags, and any abundance is plastic? It's not an all or nothing effort- every little bit helps.

I bought two of these bags Chat Icon I only use them when I am doing a small shop for essentials or if I need to pick up a few items for dinner.

When it comes to the bi-weekly big shopping I can't. There is no way I am taking a dozen of those bags with me.

Re: honestly - who brings their own bags to the grocery store?

I think this is a GREAT POST.

I bought a reusable canvas tote at Whole Foods many months ago. It was $1 and it has a picture of a bee on it.

I keep it in my trunk, and always bring it into the store. I need a few more, maybe I will go to stop and shop and buy those.

I usually use paper bags when my order is large, so I can recycle them. I always feel very very guilty about using the plastic bags. I do return them to Stop and Shop in their recycle bin, but I still hate using them regardless. And I always reuse any that I have at home for whatever (small garbage pail liner, dog waste, etc).

I have been reading that reusable bags are becoming more popular these days. And that Whole Foods is selling a bag that people are going nuts for. Costs $15 and it has been sold on ebay for a lot higher. It says "I am not a Plastic bag" on it. I have yet to see this one. While that seems very expensive (and trendy) if ANYTHING helps people recycle, if they think it is fashionable to use this bag, that is good for the environment.

I think we should all try to become more environmentally conscious and hopefully the movement has been sparked.

Great thread!

Re: honestly - who brings their own bags to the grocery store?

I do!! We have about 7 or 8 of them, I think. We have a few of the stop and shop ones and also some of the waldbaums ones. I think the ones from waldbaums hold more than the S&S ones. We just put them on the bottom of the shopping cart while we are shopping.
Waldbaums gives you a credit of 5 cents for every reusable bag you use. Not much, but its a nice effort on their part to provide an incentive.

I also try to bring one in with me when I go to Target or other stores but I forget a lot. I really need to be better about that!

I don't really understand the people who say they have too many groceries or it is too much of a pain to bring the bags in with you... They hold more than a plastic bag, you can keep them in your trunk and then throw them in the cart. Whats the big deal?

i do every single time. I keep them in my car & try to use them at all stores. They are a little larger than some of the canvas type, I got them @ waldbaums for 99cents each

Also the insulated ones (which is where I pack the meat) have the shiny plasticy inside so it can easily be wiped with a Clorox wipe or something.

I also NEVER let them put milk or detergent (any big things with a handle) or soda in a bag.

I don't use the green bags (I am seriously considering it though) but I return all plastic bags that we get to the recycling bin at stop and shop. My hopes is that I'm just replenishing whatever I take out.

I wonder what happens with the bags that go into the recycling bin though.

Here is an article about the "trendy" resuable bag called "I am not a plastic bag" being sold at Whole Foods. I haven't seen it there but supposedly it is being sold there.

I am not a plastic bag

Trendy yes, but helping the environment hopefully!
