I wonder what happens with the bags that go into the recycling bin though.

The bags aren't recycleable, so I wonder too- I have been told that those are for reuse.

Oh dear... please tell me they sterilize them. This alone is reason enough for me to start using the reusable ones. Chat Icon

I'm not sure- but I was just thinking about that too- eww.
They are definitely not recyclable though- and putting them in the bin isn't reducing anything, so the only one left is reuse...
I wonder if they ship them back, sterilize them and then pack them up like new bags?
Or if it's just a bin that sits there, and you can reach in and grab some?
BC if they are shipping them, sterilizing them, and putting them through a process to fold them all neat and reattach the tabs, then that's kind of an energy waste, and therefore stil better to use the green bags.

I think people tend to forget that it's not just about the waste of throwing these bags in the trash- it's more about the energy and resources needed to create them in the first place.

eta- it's all about reducing the demand for plastic. Reusing is better than not, but it still requires getting them in the first place.

But I thought RI has a statewide plastic bag recycling program?

I'm confused now as to whether they are or aren't recycle-able.

(Then I will want stats on whether it's more harmful to the environment to recycle them or to toss them....)

I do Chat Icon

At first, my DH thought I was insane and it was just one of my "phases" Chat Icon But then he quickly realized that they are much easier to carry up the stairs than the plastic crap and you can fit much more into the bags.

I'm interested to know this as well.
Re: your second point- I am confused- I know if takes energy to recycle, but you are saving the material, and reducing waste. Even if it takes as much energy to recycle as it does to make from new- you are at the very least preventing new material use and reducing the landfill waste.
Recycling is always better.
But not using in the first place is better than that.

I never do.. and that's probably because I never go in just to buy one thing so I would need to schelp 15 bags with me every time to the store.. ugh lol

the only time I've EVER seen anyone with a bag is at any food store in NYC.. but in LI? never

I would need at least 20 of those bags for all the groceries I buy in one trip.
No way is it practical for me...

same here - too many groceries

Believe it or not, this isn't necessarily true. We buy a lot and always had like 15 or 20 plastic bags (not including the ones that were "double bagged"). I bought 6 bags and one hot/cold bag and all my groceries always fit! They are so much bigger. And, at a dollar a piece, if you use them 10 times you are already getting your money worth.

ETS: I have the Stop and SHop ones and I got them for .99 each. Then the hot/cold one was 3.99

I've seen quite a few people bring their own bags, usually canvas, to Whole Foods. I haven't seen this anywhere else though.

I do! I bought the charity ones at Waldbaums-some type of foundation(I forget what) They were .99. I think it is one of the simpler things we can do why not do it.

I have a few, I should really start. We just have too many groceries most of the time to fit everything in. I guess using a few is better than using many!

Sweet- I think I am wrong- it looks like they do recycle them from those bins.
Awesome.
Still better to not use them at all though.

I think the point was the RI is the only state with a statewide plastic bag recycling program -- not the only place in the US where you can recycle them.

From that link: "Rhode Island is the only state in the country that has a unified, free recycling program for plastic bags and plastic film." (emphasis added)... They're not saying they're the only place you can recycle them.

I know, I HATE using those bags. I've stopped using them for some things, if I'm going to be peeling the skin off anyway. You can also reuse them instead of using new ones each time you go shopping. Keep them inside your grocery bags and you'll never forget them!

agreed- I don't use bags, unless it's for something like green beans. But for 4 apples, no baggie. Another reason the cloth bags come in handy- bc they keep my pears and peaches from rolling around in the cart- I just put them right in the bag.. Chat Icon

I do, I leave them in the car so I don't forget (well ok, sometimes I do forget) but most of the time I have them.

Most of the stores around here give you 2-5 cents back per bag for using them too.

I think the stores need to educate their cashiers a little more with the use of these bags. I can't tell you how many times they have packed my friggin' canvas bags into a plastic bag Chat Icon
I try to be there to pack my own but between loading the belt, making sure my son is still next to me, getting the stupid keychain card out, etc etc they start bagging into plastic before I can even get up front!

maybe this means that in RI, you can put the bags in your red recycling pail at your home?
I guess S&S and Waldbaums are paying for those bins- good for them!

our Walmart had a plastic bag recycling bin in their store, and its a good thing because they are the worst offenders!

They love to pack every single item in its own bag! Chat Icon
