Re: honestly - who brings their own bags to the grocery store?

I am so glad to see that I am not the only one who cares about these things!

Hopefully more LIFers will consider it after this thread!

Here is another article about stop and shop's plastic recycling program. It sounds like they get recycled into plastic decking materials.

Results
Combined, Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover recycled more than 2,000 tons of plastics in 2004 and over 2,100 tons in 2005. Not only are Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover diverting thousands of recyclable waste from the landfills annually, but they are also saving on the spiral costs of trash removal.

This press release discusses the recycling at a local stop and shop in West Babylon.

I do I bought both Stop and Shop and also the Waldbaums ones which are more durable than S & S. I havent used a plastic bag in about a year or so.

I bought 5 from S&S and leave them in the car. You can fit SO much in them. I haven't yet used all 5 in one trip.

Thanks for the kick in the butt ladies - I've been meaning to do this and definitely will the next time I'm in S&S. Every little bit helps!

We use them. I love them. They go right into my trunk and are SO much stronger than the plastic bags. I open them up in the cart and use the personal scanner that S&S has now and load up the bags as I go through the store.

The S&S bags look so small. Do you really hold anything in them like a carton of eggs?

I got these too but have only remembered to use them once since i got them Chat Icon ! I agree that you can definitely fit a lot in them and they are sturdy which does make it easier to carry them from the car to the house.

I have a couple that I got free at a street fair, but I have yet to use them. I really should throw them in my trunk. I use the plastic grocery bags for garbage bags in my kitchen, so they get recycled before being thrown out.

I got mine at Hannaford, they EASILY hold twice as much as a regular plastic baggie and are much stronger, plus they fold down and snap closed to approx 5x7

I think they were $2.50 a pc

I almost always bring my own bags! I hate plastic bags, what a waste! I carry around a burlap bag with me most of the time. If I only buy a few things, I don't take a bag at all. My town is going to go plastic bag free, I can't wait!

Our local butcher gives out 85,000 bags a year. Thats a lot of bags.

Re: honestly - who brings their own bags to the grocery store?

I take the "reuse" approach to this.

You know those paper bags with the nice handles you get from stores? I never throw them away. I have them from all sorts of clothing stores, shoe stores, etc. I even keep all the gift bags I receive.

I also have two beach bags that do double duty in the off season. That's where the heavy things like the milk goes.

And I've gone so far to choose my bags in accordance with the length and width of the shopping cart. Chat Icon I can fit five bags in which is more than enough for once a week shopping for 2 of us.

I've gotten some looks from people and always make sure to make a friendly comment. Maybe that will remind them there's no reason they can't do it too. Chat Icon

It really is a pleasant surprise to see so many of you doing this too. Maybe there's hope for us yet. Chat Icon

I do- my grocery store (Hannaford- not on LI) gives you a .10 credit per bag every time you use them. They have already paid for themselves and if something makes a mess in one I'll just replace it. (Though they have held up really well.)

We had SO many of those plastic bags- it was annoying. Though I used many of them to wrap breakable stuff I was putting in storage.

I never have, but after reading that you can carry much more in them, I think I may have to pick some up! It sounds like they would make my life easier.

Re: honestly - who brings their own bags to the grocery store?

I have a stupid question!! When you get up to the cash register, do you tell the cashier that you have your own bags? Do you give him/her one of your bags, while you are both packing up the groceries?
I have never seen anyone use them, other then when I go to Wild by Nature.

that's a good deal for those bags. would be handy for BJ's or Costco too!

I used mine at BJs the other day and I felt like the smartest person alive while everyone struggled with those stupid boxes!

I didnt know that insulated ones were made - I will have to get some. I def use them for dry groceries but not for perishables because I didnt want to ruin my bags. I live in Queens and I get a lot of double takes when I use the bags but I dont care.

I also go to other stores and if I buy something small enough like a greeting card or some lotion and I tell the cashier NO BAG like 100 times - they just dont get it! I can fit plenty of things in my purse.
