House style question(Colonial, victorian etc.)update
My husband and I are going to look at house tonight. My mom drove past it and basically told me its "the ugly" house on the block. Its described as an award winning contemporary style home. My husband and I (from pictures) think its quite cute, however my mom says all the surrounding houses ate cute colonials and victorians, and that I wont like being it the "weird house" . Oh BTW great block and wonderful neignborhood.
So my question, is anyone in the "wierd house" on their block?
oh another BTW price just dropped 40k .

my house was so scary looking when we saw it i wanted to turn around and literally laughed through the entire showing. my husband saw the potential. the outside is still kinda scary but we are working on it! so yes, i live in the house that people used to cross the street to avoid!!! ha.

While we are not the "weird house" (we live in a very traditional looking ranch...our house was a spot build (back in the 60s) so we are the only one with our model on the block. However we dont look out of place by any means.

Re: House style question(Colonial, victorian etc.)
I sort of agree with your Mom in that you don't want to be the odd house but at the same time it's nice to have a house that stands out...I'm in a townhome and our house is the same as our neighbors and that can get pretty boring...
Do you see potential in it? Do you think there is anything you can do to make it blend in more with the other houses?
I think if you love it and it doesn't bother you, you shouldn't let it stop you - but it could be a reason why the house has not sold yet.

I think that house is cute AND I think you can change the exterior of it pretty easily-it's not so contemporary.

Location is the most important part of the buying process. Everything else you can change. A homes look is a personal preference. Your Mom my not like flat roof homes, you might. Just remember if you are ever thinking of selling and not changing the roof design flat roof homes are harder to sell on Long island.

I mean, I do like the flat roof, but I could see it becoming peak and bringing value to it.
Ok guys just wish me luck, seeing we already lost 2 houses in bidding wars.

My mom lives in a huge victorian, so yea she has different taste, I'd have her house if I had her pocket book. A lot of it has to do with her wanting me in "what I grew up in"

Re: House style question(Colonial, victorian etc.)
first off, I know your mom probably means well, but she needs to let you make your own opinion about stuff like this- you are an adult now, lol!!
then I would say, your better off being the worst house in the neighborhood because you can always improve it and make it EXACTLY the way you always wanted a house. Buying a house that is completly re-done but maybe not how you wanted it, is a waste IMO because you paid for the newer stuff when you purchase the house, and its not even what you wanted. If that makes any sense.
But going in to look at it with not a lot of hope might set you up to be even more excited about it, because from the picture it looks a lot nicer then your mom described!!
good luck!!

Thank you! I agree, the neighborhood is amazing. The property is beautiful from the pictures, and I think the house is a good structure. Thank you for the advise, I'll update tonight when I get home from seeing it!

Re: House style question(Colonial, victorian etc.)
wow I think its so nice- not ugly at all- and the landscaping looks like its really nice too!
I agree with what a pp said about buying the worst house on the block- definitely could make a lot of $$ as you fix it up

Re: House style question(Colonial, victorian etc.)
wow, i think it's really charming actually.
i think it has a cute, almost east hampton-ish cottage look to it.
it's kept very well. the landscaping is beautiful.
i usually think houses are cute unless ULTRA modern - b/c, for re-sale, those are tough to sell because they are SO unique and so distinct.

update*
WOOF
It was at the bottom of a hilled road, and it was on the top of its own hill... no back yard it just dropped and had waterfall pond things everywhere.
The house was cute and charming, however not practical at all to raise a family in, the search continues!
