How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
Just out of curiosity, how do you think this situation should play out? What would be the 'fairest' resolution?
Young woman is sitting on the subway. She is in her seat (a two seater) for about 8 stops. She has about 10 to go. At this point a man gets on and takes the seat next to her. A minute later he pulls out a baggie of nuts and starts eating. The woman has a nut allergy.
What should happen here? Does she speak up and ask him to put them away? Does she move to another seat?
Important info: the allergy is not deadly but is severe, and her reactions have in the past started by smelling nuts.
Go!

hmm, if it was me with the nut allergy- I would move
but if I was the other person, I would definitely put them away if someone asked me

How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
I'm not one for confrontation but in a situation like that I would think she would have to speak up. It is essentially dangerous to her health/well-being.

She should get up and move. It's not like the guy was being rude or insensitive. How is he supposed to know she has a nut allergy? Maybe he's diabetic... or on his way to feed the starving children of Calcutta.

How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
I would get up and move. It's my allergy so I would be proactive in moving not asking someone else to get up. If I were disabled, injured or elderly I would say something to them

If I had the nut allergy, I would get up and move. It's my responsibility in a public place to make sure my health is safe, not a stranger's.

This. if it was MY allergy then *I* would move. I dont see why others shouldn't be able to enjoy their snack.
If I was asked to put my peanuts away because that person had an allergy.. I won't lie I would have a flash of "Wha?" then think Ok fine, no biggie. then again I sometimes would eat something on the train because i was literally starving and had somewhere to go or do and had just that small trip to get something in my tummy so I may have not been so willing. I dont know. I'm just being honest. When I was preggo I am pretty sure I ate something on the subway and if you were sitting next to me and told me to put away I might have given you an ugly look.

Re: How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
My ideal situation: Girl stands up to move/leave, says, "Sorry, I need to get up because I'm allergic to nuts." and the guy would be considerate and put away his snack.
Reality: Girl should move and let the guy eat his snack. It's not a nut-free train and there's no way he could know.

Agreed, she is the one with the allergy, she should move, unless maybe she's in a handicapped seat. I'm not a fan of confrontation in a situation like this, even if it would be polite.

The girl with the allergy should move. It's her health and her responsibility. A subway is not a nut-free zone.

I'd kind of treat it like when someone eating a damn gyro platter or someone that smells like BO sits near me...just get up and move.
I know that a seat during rush hour is prime real estate in NYC...it sucks...but such is life on public transportation.

i would assume you would inform the airplane of this before hand, and perhaps they would have you switch seats with someone?
that being said, allergies stink, but you can't honestly expect everywhere in the world to be nut free or take your allergy into consideration..
i'd be annoyed if i had a pb sandwich on an airplane and i was told i couldn't eat it bc the person next to me had a nut allergy

On the subway where there are no assigned seats I would get up and move. On a plane I would ask the person to put it away as you have assigned seats.
With that said if it was a crowded train car I would say something but if it was not crowded I would just get up and move elsewhere. - Signed a girl with allergies.

Re: How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
I have been on a plane where they said no nuts will be served due to another passengers allergy. Due to the recirculated air it becomes a problem if someone 10 seats away is eating nuts

I was on a plane on New Year's Day and they made an announcements that they wouldn't be serving peanuts due to a but allergy.

ITA.
I have a severe nut allergy. I would never even consider asking someone else to move.
If you were allergic to perfume and someone with a ton of perfume came on, would you also ask them to move?
I don't expect the world to change to accomodate my specific needs.
As for the plane, I would simply notify them in advance or when I was onboard and I'm sure they would accomodate.
Difference being that the plane is a guarenteed, assigned seat.

Yes, I've been on flights and have heard that too.
It's fine by me. A minor inconvenience = no nuts for a few hours in flight. A major inconvenience = some poor soul going into shock and having a plane diverted for medical care.

Re: How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
I actually agree with the majority here BUT, to play devil's advocate....
I get the assigned seat difference on a plane BUT what about the enclosed space/recirculated air thing? I totally understand that the world doesn't stop for someone with allergies but what about that person's right to use public transport without risking their own health?
Just thoughts that are coming up as I read responses. Thanks for all of the replies so far!
