She should get up and move. It's not like the guy was being rude or insensitive. How is he supposed to know she has a nut allergy? Maybe he's diabetic... or on his way to feed the starving children of Calcutta.
I agree

Does the situation change if it's an airplane? How do airplanes handle this, does anyone know?
They announce it's a nut free flight and don't hand out peanuts, I know that. I think the flight attendant would tell the patron to put their nuts away if someone was allergic. Especially since the air is recirculating on an airplane, and you are on there for hours.

Person with allergy should move. On a plane, I dont even remember the last time I saw a bag of nuts being handed out.

If my allergies were so severe that I could go into shock by just smelling nuts then I would not take public transportation because I would be afraid someone who ate nuts did not wash their hands and I could inadvertently touch something they touched.

There were nuts handed out on both my flights over the Christmas vacation.

Delta hands them out...the bags are about the size of an iPod shuffle, it's pathetic!
But they definitely still hand them out; had one on a flight just a couple weeks back.

Ok, while I find eating on the subway absolutely vile and sometimes rude...I would have to say woman should just get up and move to another seat or area of the train.

If I had an allergy, I would move. If it was on a airplane, I would explain the situation to the person and ask them to put the nuts away.
I never eat or drink on the subway though, the environment just seems germy to me.

100% I would get up and move. Even if he was happy to put the nuts away I would never ask. It's not his problem and this isn't a nut-free world.
eta I think airplanes should be nut free.

I have been on a plane where they said no nuts will be served due to another passengers allergy. Due to the recirculated air it becomes a problem if someone 10 seats away is eating nuts
That's what I was thinking. You could sit in the cockpit and still get a reaction since the air is all recycled. I'd imagine the airline would need to be informed beforehand.

I have been on 15 flights in the last 3 months- they served nuts on all but 1 b/c of an allergy
I am diabetic and the only snack I can eat with out taking insulin is nuts....and I would rather not shot up on a plane- that freaks me out for some reason

Re: How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
As someone who has a lot of allergies both food and envirnmental (can't handle things like perfumes, scented candles as well). You know it is a hard thing. I say she should move.
Look there are all sorts of allergies out there. Someone's perfume might send one person into an asthma attack, I know several people who have life threatening milk allergies. One whose throat starts to tighten if she goes to starbucks. But with that and other allergies she eats a lot of nuts. So she had a hard time when on a flight someone didn't want her to eat a pb&j sandwich she had but she could eat nothing they could provide due to her life threatening allergies. She ended up moving to a different part of the plane but she said she was told they can stop serving nuts but can't ask passengers to not eat ones they brought. They try to move people around if it is an issue.
So as someone with allergies (luckily not life threatening) and who knows many people with life threatening allergies, I understand there is no perfect solution. I feel bad for those with them but it IS a difficult situation.
I think it is up to you to watch out for your or your childrens interests. It stinks but there are a lot of places that do not accommodate nut allergies. You can eat on a subway..I wouldn't want to, but it isn't against the law. I would say in a public place. I would just quietly get up and move if I had an allergy. If they exclude nuts for safety, do you exclude shellfish, milk, perfume, or whatever it is bc someone might have a life threatening allergy to it? As great as that sounds unfortunately it isn't feasible. This is why I carry benedryl and an epi pen for my DD bc you never know what you will be exposed to or their reaction.
I actually know one family who won't fly bc while they accommodate nut allergies that is one of the few things their child is not allergc to. It is too risky for this child to fly so they drive when they want to go away.

She should move. She's ultimately responsible for her own health.
I also wouldn't hesitate to put them away if I was asked.

Re: How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
I'd move. It is the allergy suffer's responsibility to be proactive in regard to his or her own health.
As far as peanuts on a plane - I've been on flights where they've announced no peanuts will be served due to an allergy, but they cannot stop someone who brought peanuts on as a snack from eating them.
I have cousins who won't fly because their child has a severe peanut allergy and while the airlines won't serve peanuts on that particular flight, they cannot guarantee that the child won't come in contact with "peanut dust" from a previous flight or touch something that someone who ate peanuts touched.

How do YOU think this situation should be handled?
On the train she should move. No question.
On a plane, I would request a seat change for myself, and if that was impossible, then I would request that they not eat it. I don't think everyone should conform to the person with the allergy unless it is very severe.

If the allergy on the plane is that severe, I would think either call the airline or tell the stewardess before you are boarding. Jet blue hands a lot of snack choices so there are more than just peanuts on the flights.

I actually agree with the majority here BUT, to play devil's advocate....
I get the assigned seat difference on a plane BUT what about the enclosed space/recirculated air thing? I totally understand that the world doesn't stop for someone with allergies but what about that person's right to use public transport without risking their own health?
Just thoughts that are coming up as I read responses. Thanks for all of the replies so far!
Maybe if it was that bad I would explain the situation to the person next to me and ask if they can not eat the snack until the next stop so I could switch cars. That' can't be more than a few minutes of "inconvenience" to the other person. No matter how hungry I was I woul dbe able to hold off so another person is safe.
