Maybe at the HS level, but not for pre school or elementary. I know this is premised on whether we could afford to do it, but even if I could I think would put that $ away for college, which the projected cost of is CRAZY for when dc go.

Maybe I don't get it or just can't fathom it because I'm not that wealthy, but it seems like a waste to me. I mean maybe if I was so filthy rich I didn't know what to do with my $Chat Icon

I would absolutely make that investment if the school was a good one. I work in an independent school, and I whole-heartedly believe in what we do and think it's worth every penny it costs, and then some. Are all schools that cost a ton worth it? No. But I know there are many, many schools that ARE worth it. With the way the cuts are going to be handed out to the public schools, I think it's a wise investment in your child and their education.

Look at all the IVY leaguers out there that are being hit so hard by this recession. All because they overspent. JMHO

That's just kind of strange to say--of course ivy leaguers are getting hit--everyone is--but to assume that they overspent when MANY private colleges cost just as much if not more as ivy league schools is just wrong.

An ivy league degree is not a guarantee of success--I feel that self motivation is more of a key--but it does open some doors that may not be opened without it. And I don't need to hear the story of the people who didn't go to college and make 6 figures, because it's not about money.

I wouldnt need to know how the "public schools" were. Bottom line is with the info given I would make sure my dd got the best education. To me it seems like a no brainer.

If we could afford it and it had everything I wanted for DD and it was well rated then I would.

I went to private school for half of my education. My friends in public school had so much more available to them. I think it really depends on the school. We have relatives with kids at a prestigious Long Island School and you'd think this would be top notch but they are very disappointed in several aspects of the school.

I'd find parents and ask around. It sounds like it could be a great school and if it is I'd send DD if we could afford it.

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$

I just have to say, reading the responses on this thread are incredibly eye-opening to me. Like I said, I work in an independent school, and I see some really assanine comments about private school teachers being thrown around. It's highly offensive to me. If you don't believe in a private school education, that's absolutely FINE, but don't belittle those of us who DO think it's worth it and who work in those schools. We do not just hire "anyone" and we do not just hire people without backgrounds in education. No, we're not required to hire teachers with certification, but there are not many teachers I know of in independent schools that aren't certified.
Plus, each and every independent school is different. We look at education A LOT differently than public schools. We have missions that drive our curriculum and how we steer our students. Every school has a different mission statement and different portrait of a graduate that it aims to instill in its students. Many parents do not know that you need to look for the school that best suits your philosophy on education, as well as looking for a school that is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools.
So before you start judging those of us who work in private schools and send our children to private schools, it's important to know the facts.
No, a private school does not guarantee an excellent education, but I firmly believe that many children can benefit from being in the RIGHT school for them. Not all private schools are right for all children and not all private schools are right for kids at all. Some kids SHOULD be in public schools, but many times, finding a school that really works well for your child that is independent is a good way to ensure a fulfilling, meaningful, purposeful education.

ita.

The school I love has a huge music program, art program, science labs, phys ed, spanish from day 1.
whatever the later outcome is, it sounds like a really great way to spend his days now.

Not all phenomenal private schools are top dollar and I don't think that's what Paulette was saying. I think it happens to be that the school the OP was talking about happens to be top dollar.

I disagree that IVY LEAGUE opens door. I have seen first hand people walk in with an IVY league degree and someone who graduated from Nassau Community College get hired for the job. ITA about self motivation. In our home everyday we got home from school and a snack was laid out and we sat there until our homework was done, and we had studied. This set our study skills into motion when we hit college. It worked well for both of us!!

In this case scenario it does. She said it was a much better school then the local public schools. Yes, I agree that if the question was "which are better for children public or private"...then my answer would be do the research.

I don't know because we can't afford it! Chat Icon
But I'm a public school teacher and I truly believe a great education can be had at any schoo, private, public, independant, etc....
I think it's more about the value of education that you instill in your child, rather than the school they go to.

However, if I were in the position to send Lily, I might.

But I don't see where the OP is saying that it is that much better than the public or other private schools in the area?

I just re-read the OP and she said it was very well rated, but not that it was the BEST or gave any info about other schools in the area....

Assuming I did have the money and the school was REALLY good (not just a rich people school with no back bone in education!).... ABSOLUTELY!

I went to both public then private school. In my case, the private school was several levels ahead about our local public schools. I was a B+ student in public school. I could barely manage a C the first year I entered private school. I ended up catching up but it took a lot of work.

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$

I guess I took the well-rated comment to mean that to her, it was worth the money. KWIM? I mean, trust me, there are PLENTY of schools that are expensive that are not worth a single penny you pay to them, but there are plenty of private schools that are. If the OP deems this one worth the money because in her mind it's top rated, then it's worth it. I mean, there's also many cases where you might think a school is top notch, you get there, have your kid there for a while and then realize it's NOT worth the money, but clearly, she felt the ratings of the school, whatever that means to her, were compelling enough to consider the school.

I would probably only send them for high school and not for nursery or elementary, especially if you are in a good public school district.

I think if I really had that type if money, I wouldn't be so Chat Icon by it.

this is what i believe as well.

if i hung with that type of crowd, of course i would because it is expected. not hanging with that crowd, no way...

i went to a public school that was "private" in a way because they churned out ivy kids. i actually spent my last few years in a private catholic school because the values of the community/parents of the elite public school didn't gel with those of my parents...

Not unless I was super rich. I think that education is more what you make of it. I have plenty of friends from low income families who attended NYC public schools and went on to Ivy league colleges.

I probably wouldnt.

While some public school districts may not be as good as others, I think if the child fully applies themselves and the parents play an active role in their education, they will be successful. And I think that even in a private school, a kid can still be a slacker and get into trouble or not do so well.

I'm not sure I wrote exactly what I wanted to say. Chat Icon

And who knows - I might feel differently if I had the $$ Chat Icon

I am assuming you are referring to my post earlier. If you were to re-read it you would see that I did not say ALL private schools. But I have found that many do not require their teachers to be certified, perhaps yours does, but I can name you at least 5 that I know of that don't. In my opinion if I am paying that much money I want teachers that are certified. Anyway, the point of my post was that not all private schools are what they are chalked up to be. I am not belittling them or judging, just giving my opinion, which is what I thought this thread was asking for.

Yes, if I could afford it like it was just another little bill, but not if it would make us struggle.

Besides the education, I like the idea that disruptive kids or bad seeds can get kicked out of a private school, whereas public school has to be open to all. That's assuming my kids aren't the troublemakers.Chat Icon

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$

I was a private school kid my entire life. Even if I could afford it, I would still send my child to public school. My school was well known, and celebrities and celeb kids went there.

When I compare what I learned to what someone in a public school learned, I feel like I have been jipped. And our athletc department was a joke.

Of course, all schools are different, but I don't think paying extra for an education promises an Ivy League future, or an athletic one. Or hell, even a wealthy one!

I would also be concerned in this economy. Just because I could afford it this year - what if I lost all of my money and income and blew my child's college education when he or she was 4?
