Yes, if I could afford it like it was just another little bill, but not if it would make us struggle.
Besides the education, I like the idea that disruptive kids or bad seeds can get kicked out of a private school, whereas public school has to be open to all. That's assuming my kids aren't the troublemakers.
Kids got kicked out of my public school all the time. It might have taken a little longer than if we were in private school, but it did happen.

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$
I think I'm kind of turned off by elite schools because my friend went to one and had the worst experience. He was wealthy - but the kind of people who went to his school were in a whole other stratosphere of rich and he felt like the 'poor kid' every day of his life there - plus he was artsy so that didn't help! I think you'd need a really good sense of self confidence to survive in that kind of competitive (academic and social) environment.
Take this story, give him a vagina, name him Liza, and voila - my story!

If I were rich and it wouldn't effect my life (ie putting me in debt), then yes.

I think that's just over the top price wise and I would say that a school like that is going to be filled with very weathy people. So unless I was equally wealthy, I would not want my child to be the one there with the least, and have to scrape by to afford that. But thats JMO.
If the public schools are fine, or even other private schools cost a lot less, I would go with those options.
I agree.

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$
I would save the money for a great college later on or sending DC to summer programs/camps rather than spend it on a private education earlier in life. I'm a college administrator and have read quite a bit that it's actually HARDER to get into a good college if you go to private school because colleges like diversity (economic, social, ethnic, etc.) and if everyone looks the same on paper (good grades, private school, wealthy or well-off family etc.) it makes the competition that much stiffer.
A friend of mine went to private school in NYC all through school. I went to a so so public school. We wound up at the same top-tiered university.

i wouldnt. i want our kids to go to a great school but not a $30,000 a year school. we are looking to buy a house early 2011 and one of the most important "amenities" to me is to live in a great school district. i want my child to be thrive in a school that is diverse.

If I could absolutely afford it, then yes I would send her.
Same here! Also, I went to private school and my brother is attending a private school so I know my DD will be attending a private school. It will not cost us $30k but that is where she will be going.

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$
I'd have to say no. I think its more about the teachers and the student themselves that determines the education they get. You could pay 30,000 and end up with the meanest, worthless teachers or you could pay 30,000 and get the worlds greatest teachers. Plus like you said colleges don't really care where you go to school...just what grades you get. I worked in admissions for a local college and they only looked at transcripts and sats not really where the kid went. Maybe if it was to decide between 2 students that were even......tough call, but I'm leaning towards no. I'd put the money towards college.

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$
We would have to have so much $ that we did not know what to do with it when I would be comfortable to send both DCs to private school. I feel like you have to be able to afford way more than just the tuition to be able to go to a school like that. It is having a vacation house in Vail or Aspen, X-mas vacation in Europe. Summers doing some adventure kind of vacation. An expensive car for the 16th birthday. The clothing when you are out of school. The house. The lifestyle. It is an entire package and with that for most kids comes an attitude about life. While these schools most certainly open up many doors. I think a good work ethic, public schools and parents taking an active role in their children's education can make up for not going to an elite grammar/high school. DH went to an Ivy. I went to a top 25 college. I think you can do very well without private elementary schools. I was actively recruited to go to them. I looked it over, but in the end decided to stay in public school. It might be different for another child. I would go look. There is no harm in looking.

Plenty of kids get kicked out of public school...and in my town then ended up at the stony brook school...the very elite local private school
I can name a few
It worked both ways...a very cute boy showed up senior year...after being kicked out of 4 private schools on long island

No...........never! What a crazy waste of $$$. For all the money I spend every year in taxes there is no way I would ever consider paying for a private school even if I had the money. We bought a house in a good school district for a reason. That is good enough for me.

I would have to be super wealthy. Remember, your kid will be with kids whose parents are super wealthy and that could be tough. These kids are going to have things that you can't give your own kids.
DH and I are both Catholic School Kids (he was grade school through high school and I went just in high school).
We firmly believe in a good education, but education is also what you as parents and your kids make of it.
The best school in the world can't turn your kid into an Einstein if your kid isn't meant to be one.

Ok, so there is a really great school near us here in NJ. It is really well-rated....it is coed for nursery school, and then becomes all-girls through 12 grade. We have friends with 5 girls in their family who attended and they all went to Ivy League schools. Well, I am going tomorrow morning to check it out.
I told DH the price and he was actually angry...which I don't blame him for....but I asked him, "what is more important than education?" and he really didn't have an answer.
Anyway...let's say you could afford it...would you send your child to an incredibly outstanding, yet incredibly expensive school? At a glance it's $12,000/year for nursery and $30,000 for middle school/high school.....huge investment....thoughts??
I would have to be UBER rich to pay this for elementary school.
I am talking RIIIICCCCHHHHHHHH!!! not well off.
no, I would not pay that much. there is too much that goes into what a child gets out of its education...and $30k isn't one of them...or going to change that.
I agree with Jess on this one. I rather save the money to send my DS to a great outstanding college. No nursery / elementary school is worth that much - JMHO.
Just to add to this, and I'm speaking solely from a financial standpoint, you never know if there can be a life change of events in the future. You may be able to afford the 30,000 school now, but, who knows what will happen down the road? What will happen if the money is no longer available and you are forced to send your child to public school after attending a private/elite school for so many years? You kind of have to think about that too, kwim? It will be a major culture shock.

If I could afford it with no problems, I probably would send her if it was as well-rated as you say.
Same for me. The afford "with no problems" is key for me. If I could barely afford it or it would affect my lifestyle in any way (change vacations we like to take, etc), I probably would not spend so much money on it and would find a middle ground

No. I pay enough in taxes to send DS to public school here in NJ.
Exactly!
We live in an affluent area in NJ, great school district, I'm not 100% thrilled with the high school, but that's another story I won't get into here.
I had thought about sending DD when she was old enough to Solomon Schecter (Jewish Day School) instead of public school, but DH is adament about public school because of what we pay in taxes. (which I'm okay with). Our taxes are INSANE ($20k+ per year).

Re: If you could afford it...would you send your DC to a top school that costs $$$$
I really don't know if I believe in that for a preschool level - I'm sure if I had that kind of money, the price would seem like a drop in the bucket, and then it really wouldn't be a question b/c who cares what it costs? KIWM? ..........
At a Jr. High or HS level - I'd absolutely pay IF my child was equipped to handle that kind of atmosphere and the academic standards - I'm not about to torture my child if he''s not Ivy league material - (not to imply anyone IS doing that - I'm just making a point) For as much as we all want to think our kids are brilliant, not every child is going to be Ivy League material, regardless of the education they receive -
I WILL say, as far as the 'keeping up w/ the Jones(s)" comments, my DH came from a a family that struggled to send him to Chaminade - Now, I realize that there are MANY schools MUCH more prestigious and 'wealthy' than Chaminade, but he will tell you a million times over, going there, and seeing those kids, and what they came from and how they lived - it just made him want to work that much harder to someday get to that level .........and it still drives him, to this day ........
But that is his personality - he's driven and ambitious and an over achiever - and happens to be ridiculously smart - so for him, that was the best investment his parents could make -
If my kid were there, absoluetly I'd do it. -

I wouldn't do it for a K-12 education, especially if there are decent public schools around. Both DH and I are products of public schools, and we both turned out fine! I went to an Ivy League for undergrad and am at one now doing my doctorate. DH ended up becoming a physician.
That being said, if you can afford it and really want to do it, go for it. Personally, I'd rather save the money for undergrad/grad school or bank it into savings. Also, I'm not a fan of all boys/girls schools.

I would even if I wasn't rich! We're paying a small fortune now in daycare expenses (appx. $12K a year) so to add a bit more wouldn't be a big deal. To me, not only is it important that my son gets a great education, but that he has all types of resources to excel and be in an environment where kids and parents want the same...I'm actually starting to scout out some schools now...although the public schools in my neighborhood are excellent. I'll make the decision when the time comes.

Only if the public schools in my area were not good.
I student taught at a top private school in the city and while the education was great there were many things that I was not a fan of.
I guess alot of it also depends on the kid..

Well we pay nearly $36,000 now for daycare/preschool and I can't lie I pretty much work to pay for it and I'm looking foward to when I don't have to pay that much.
If money weren't an issue and the reputation was as outstanding as you say then absolutely.
