I think AT LEAST 80...it takes a lot of continuing education to be a teacher and for those that ask what a kindergarten teacher needs, I will tell you..kindergarten is NOT what it used to be!
Kids are expected to be reading by the end of K and that takes extensive knowledge on the part of the teacher on strategies to teach reading to varied levels of exposure and experience...same with math..we are not just cutting, pasting and singing all day! Add on top of that trying to be developmentally appropriate in an age where no one knows what that means anymore plus taking care of K students emotional well being (it is true what they say..your K teacher can make or break your attitude towards school) and K teachers need just as much schooling as any other teacher!
I am so glad you posted this!! I am a Kindergarten teacher. I have also taught first grade. Kindergarten and first grade are two very critical grades in my opinion. I think people make comments because they really have absolutely no idea what a teacher does all day long-just because you once were in Kindergarten, you don't know what a Kindergarten teacher has to deal with on a daily basis. Not only are my students expected to learn to read, i am also required to teach self help skills that should be taught at home, because it is not happening in certain homes. So I am trying to potty train a child and get him to read at the same time!! I love my job and I feel I am compensated fairly for the work I do-but I definitely earn it.

I'm a NYC teacher and I think 70-80 is fair.
Same- FYI, a teacher in NYC with 15 years, Masters plus 30, will make about $80k.
I agree with this
in addition there should be no pension and no "banking" sick time. most ppl I know in private sector are making around this amount (after 10 years of working)
I would say get rid of tenure but this seems like it's already happening
That banked sick time is how we get maternity leave in NYC. We get 10 days per year. It takes three years of perfect attendance to accrue enough time to be paid for 6 weeks of leave. I don't think that is out of line at all.
And for the millionth time, tenure is not complete protection against an ineffective teacher losing his or her job. It just prevents teachers from losing their jobs indiscriminately or because they cost too much, which is exactly what will happen if this mayor gets his way. When ineffective teachers are left in the classroom, that is because administrators are not doing their jobs. They are the ones who are responsible for evaluating the staff and recommending them for tenure. If a someone earns tenure and then stops doing their job effectively, then the principal needs to do what is necessary to remove that teacher. No one dislikes bad teachers more than other teachers.

This is a little off topic but for those of you that are teachers, do you really think that having so much schooling make you a better teacher? My thought is really that masters plus 90 credits is very excessive. I think that the OOP money teachers are expected to spend on education and supplies is ridiculous. Districts or counties or the state should provide continuing Ed to teachers and teachers should be given a reasonable budget for supplies. I feel like teachers wouldn't mind making a little less if they weren't so bogged down with all of the extra time and money they need to spend on their own education, and i feel like the quality Of the teaching would remain the same.
I don't think the higher education makes a better teacher per se; my student teaching and countless observation hours taught me the most about my profession. However, the bottom line is we are required to get the education at our expense. A Master's Degree is very expensive. I would venture to guess that other professions that require that level of education are paid accordingly.

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...
Posted by nel But it's not just about the planning. It's about all of the other things we do that no one who isn't teaching would even think of. It's about the student who asked me yesterday if she could talk to me because her friends are excluding her. It's about the student three periods later who wasn't looking at me until I finally asked why, and then she burst into tears while telling me about how mean her boyfriend is (miss high school yet? )
I value teachers that help students with their outside of the classroom issues, but I know that every job has situations like this. Last week my secretary came to me crying that she was going to kill herself because her husband who has a manual labor job cut off a finger while on the job, and they are going bankrupt and losing their home. There are sob stories in every profession, and I then gave her a shoulder to cry on, and convinced her to let me take her to the Employee Assistance Program so that she could speak to a counselor. Bosses deal with suicidal employees, alcoholic employees, drug addict employees, employees with excessive lateness and tardiness, etc. Are these the same as student issues? In many ways, yes. And bosses act as counselor the same way that teachers do (if it is a good boss).
I just feel like when teachers defend the salary, it's like we take work home (everyone I know does), we stay after or work weekend events (everyone I know does), we deal with personal issues of students (everyone I know does), we had to go to grad school (everyone I work with has a doctorate). I'm not jealous, though I believe I'd be making more as a teacher, but I just wish that teachers would recognize that these are things expected of every profession. I bring in clothes for my secretary because she can't afford them on a CSEA salary and her DH can't work since he cut off his finger. I bring in food. It's just something I would hope anyone would do if you are in a position to help.

Seriously????
We need a "teaching martyr board".
Why is every topic on taxes turned into a vision of bashing teachers? Then the 50 billions spinoffs on why they are underpaid, under appreciated, etc... you name it!
For God sake...... if everyone had to keep justifying why they make or not make the income they should have, we would have a complete non sense.
People are paying taxes. They don't like feeling like a cash cow. Period!
I wish people stop looking like they are martyrs.
People got laid off on this board. We don't see a "poor me" thread every time the World does not go the way they want it to.
Just because people complain that they don't like taxes going up does not mean they bash teachers. Please!!!! Let's not turn this into martyrs.

I didn't say other jobs don't deal with issues. I said that I don't think many people realize that plenty of teachers -- who are often bashed for their short work days and long vacations -- aren't given credit for doing them, too. Your post just confirmed that we all have jobs to do, and they all require going that extra mile, and teachers are no exception -- despite how easy some seem to think we have it. That was my point. That is why I believe we don't deserve the lesser salary that some seem to think we do.

DiamondGirl..aren't you from Whitestone also?
I'm zoned for Flushing HS. Enough said.
I didn't mean to describe my childs education as "Subpar" just felt that it has proven to be repetitive throughout the years. Still I CHOSE that because I like the whole package/the bigger picture.
Yes but I am zoned for Bayside which one of the top performing schools in the city. Also the elementary schools in Whitestone are wonderful. There scores beat every catholic school in the area, almost double in fact, with the exception of St. Andrew in Flushing which has good scores.
ETA: I DO agree with what you say about the community of Catholic elem school. My friends all went to school together and have been friends since Pre K. I joined the crew in HS. Catholic elem schools DO provide a "family" and "community" I think that that is a wonderful thing.

You want teacher to pay for BA plus 2 master's and then make less than $60,000????
I have to say, I think the arguments of what the salary is should be based on the quality/quantity of work, not the required education. I teach college classes, and Assistant Professors (which all require doctorates) start at $45,000. In 10 years it's up to about $65-70. And they're all living on LI/in NYC and making it work and not living in a box (granted, most are two-income families). Pretty much every administrative position in a college requires a doctorate. It's a given these days that every professional position pretty much requires a bachelor's degree, and most a master's. It's just not that unusual, so I don't see that it should be held up as an argument.
I also teach college courses....
BTW - I'm an AMAZING teacher !

Just want to add... I have a friend who makes 80 k a year after working 8 years, punching tickets for the LIRR. Im not judging, just saying. He has an associates degree. No loans. No mandatory classes. I'm pretty sure a lot less stress.

I don't know--it's just different kind of stress. My uncle was an LIRR conductor for 40 years and broke up fights (got his nose broken), had to kick off drunks, had to stop the train for passengers who are ill/had heart attacks, etc. At face value I guess most jobs look much easier than they are.

Sorry but, I actually do not think teachers should make as much as bankers etc. Take the salaries and divide them by the hours worked and I think you will see that the teachers on the average are making out better than the bankers sometimes Also, teachers have a lot of perks - tenure, pensions and, the situation is amazing for new moms - jobs held for them to return even for a 2 year period! Who else gets that! i am not a teacher but, my family is loaded with them and they all agree that they have it pretty good!

This thread is so demeaning. Asking people what they think WE should make? Come on!
The comments and generalizations about teachers as well as all the misinformation taken as fact as fact around here is sickening. You'd think we're all standing here in a line with our hands out!
I'm not trying to be a martyr as another poster suggested- it just gets very old having to constantly defend your profession around here. No wonder kids these days don't respect teachers- their parents don't have any respect for us either!
If you think teachers are getting away with soooo much and have it soooo easy, WHY DIDN'T YOU BECOME ONE???

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...
Sorry but this thread is just ludicrous............speaking as a teacher and a person. What's the point of this thread? The general consensus on this board is that teachers are overpaid and useless and to start a thread asking anyone on here what we should make is so beyond pointless and unproductive.
I could careless what anyone thinks I should make as a teacher the same way I'm sure everyone else could careless what I think of their salaries in other professions. How about we start a thread for every profession and job out here and then we can get everyone riled up and have everyone go back and forth for 40 pages justifying how hard they work, how much education they have had, and how deserving they are of the salary they get.
It's not for anyone to say how deserving someone is of the salary they make and to comment on a system or a job you're not even a part of it just idiotic. I'm not going to try and claim to know how hard a lawyer works and how much he should be paid based on the cases he takes and the hours he works. How can I? I know nothing about it. To comment on a teachers salary, education, or job function when you're not even a teacher yourself is so beyond useless. I don't care what anyone thinks of my profession. You do your job, I'll do mine and everyone can just worry about themselves.
Enough already. This argument is just so tired.
