I'm buying a new bicycle and Im wondering if I should buy a helmet too. I've never worn one before, but it's been quite a while since I've ridden a bike.Chat Icon

Do you wear one? If so, any recommendation on a comfortable one?

Yes I wear one. I just tried on various ones until I found one I liked.

I wouldn't be caught dead in a helmet as a teen but, now... the thought of what could happen makes me shiver. I have a kid to worry about.

I would wear one...especially if you'll be sharing the road with all the idiots distracted by their cellphones. A bike shop can help you find one that works for you.

If I were to ride a bike, I think I would wear one. There's just too many crazies out there on the road.

Until our cruise, nether DH nor I had ridden a bike in 15 years, but we rented them. he MADE me wear a helmet.

My inclination is not to (pretty much no other adults were) but truly better safe than sorry. We're thinking of getting bikes and I would get a helmet. Things do happen.

Re: If you ride a bike, do you wear a helmet?

If I'm ever on my bike off my front yard, I always wear a helmet. Without fail. It's not worth the risk. My BIL fell off a bike when he was a teenager, and was unconscious for a while because he wasn't wearing a helmet.

Most new helmets have a lot of adjustments, so you can find one to fit very nicely. Bell and Giro have a large selection of helmets. Get one with a lot of vents, so your head won't overheat. The lighter the better, but they're all very light, so you won't really notice much difference.

I would go with a middle-of-the-road helmet. The ones that are really cheap aren't going to feel comfortable, and that might make you not want to wear it. The ones that are $$$ have features that most people won't notice, mainly that they are 2 grams lighter than the competitors, which amateurs will never notice.

The most important thing to look for is a helmet that you want to wear every time.

Of course. Head injuries are no joke.

Just try on a bunch until you find one that fits you right and is comfortable. If you wear sunglasses and put your hair in a ponytail a lot, try on helmets while wearing sunglasses and with your hair pulled back.

Re: If you ride a bike, do you wear a helmet?

I don't ride often but when I was into it a few years ago I didn't. I knew I should but just didn't. I rode on the path that goes from Massapequa up to Bethpage Park (I'm sure it has a name) and always felt like it was safe since there are no cars around. One day though as I came around a bend there was a man who had somehow crashed his bike and was on the ground with his head bleeding with paramedics around him. I didn't stop but he seemed like he may have been unconscious. That really scared me and makes me want to get a helmet if I should ride again. Chat Icon

Yes. Absolutely.

We had a father in our town take a spill on a local road. The traumatic brain injury he sustained in front of his elementary school kid was enough to persuade me.Chat Icon

In the past week, 2 people I know were hit by cars while riding their bikes.

I always wear a helmet when riding a bike, and emplore you to do the same.

Every time.

Re: If you ride a bike, do you wear a helmet?

The important thing to take from this thread is that it's not just cars that you have to worry about. Even if you only ride on bike trails, where no car can ever possibly go (I love going on off-road trails through the woods), hitting an obstacle (tree root, rock, drain grate[which is what my BIL hit], etc) will fling you head-first off the bike at 15+ mph. That impact will cause major damage without a helmet.

I thought it was the law?? If you trail ride without it they fine you??

I was hit by a car on Rt 347 in Port Jeff like 10 years ago, they closed the whole road just for me at rush hour, I'm sure everyone wanted to kill me. No permanent damage – I was wearing a helmet.

ITA. I broke my shoulder when I fell off my bike. I was barely moving (just came out of an elevator with the bike and just got on it when my handlebar caught on the side of a bridge). I'm lucky that I didn't hurt my head. I also agree there are so many things that can throw you off your bike. For example, I need to watch out for cobblestones and tram tracks every day when I ride.

This thread has made me get my helmet fixed this weekend. I ride my bike everyday; I should really know better.
