Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
Posted by Hofstra26
As with anything, it depends on the baby. We started solids at 4 months. My DD NEEDED solids. Out of nowhere she was pounding bottles like a maniac. She went from 6oz bottles every 3-4hrs to almost 9oz. bottles every (barely) 2hrs. She was SO hungry all the time. She constantly watched us eat and mouthed every time we chewed. So we started her on baby cereal and Stage 1 fruits and veggies and right away she dropped her bottles back down and she chewed and swallowed effortlessly. She LOVED solids.
To counterpoint the article, my DD never had a problem with choking, gas, constipation, vomiting, etc. She literally had no adverse effects from starting solids earlier. At almost 3 years old my DD is healthy and a perfect weight for her frame. I can respect the points the article makes BUT I think that as a parent you need to use your best judgement when it comes to your kids because quite frankly, what's right for one kid might not be right for another. For us, starting my DD earlier on solids was the best thing we did for her and my ped had NO problem with it either.
This was my DS #1 exactly. He was ready early, and has no issues with food allergies or anything else, he is currently 3.5 years old.
I might add that things were quite different when we were babies. My Mom gave me rice cereal on a spoon when I was less than a month old because I "seemed really hungry". I was on solids by three months, while still being nursed. I never had a food allergy or digestive issue. I have also been thin my entire life, with a small appetite, so it did not affect me adversely in that way either.

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
I had the opposite experience from this article. DS had terrible stomach problems as a baby, lots of gas, general fussiness, etc. Then he started waking alot at night around 4 months. We started solids at 5 months and it all went away. Gave him oatmeal w/ probiotics and he was the happiest baby. Had NO problems taking the food and no issues choking/gagging.
He was BF till 14 months, so starting early didn't screw up the BFing either.

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
I think the article is great, but unfortunately people will just do whatever they want anyway. How many children have diabetes these days, and how many of those children started solids before 6 months? SOOO many that I know of. It's scary.

Years ago (when I was a baby...) solids were started very early, like 2-3 months. Usually cereal for sleeping. So, why didn't we have MORE diabetic kids then? I think there is a lot of flawed and skewed data out there. Too many variables NOT examined. Also, what you eat (less vs. more processed, HFCS, etc.) are going to make a difference. Just don't buy into solids= diabetes. Like I said, too many variables left out.

My oldest niece was similar. She was formula fed, but still, once she was eating "real food" a lot of her belly issues resolved and her sleep became much better. She started around 3 months with cereal. She is 14 now and I wish I looked like her at any stage in my life, LOL. She has never had a weight issue.

Here is some info about the author (from the website):
I'm a liberal, geeky, pierced and tattooed, earth-loving Pagan. My loves in life, aside from my two exceptionally wonderful children, include coffee, teas, and a wide variety of movies, TV shows and books, but mostly fantasy and sci-fi. I'm a proud kitty-mommy to my beautiful Egyptian Mau, Isis and take pet care about as seriously as kid care. I dabble in graphic design, amateur photography, blogging and am forever researching and aspire to eventually get a grade for my autodidactic obsession.
Not that I don't appreciate Pagans, BUT I still take my medical advice from my pediatrician.
The Kelly mom analysis of the articles are very over-simplified & do not include data such as there is a BIG difference between breast & bottle fed babies esp. with the obesity studies.
My pediatrician was VERY enthusiastic about feeding barley at an early age.. 4 months... because she thinks the avoidance of that caused the SPIKE of celiac disease recently.
i completely agree in that you should be 100% confident in the advice of your pediatrician, which is why i chose the one that I chose, and why we all chose who we bring our children to...........but, what does the authors bio matter? whether she is pagan, or christian, or jewish, or muslim? does it mean that because she states that she is a pagan, that we don't consider what she is saying, or that she doesn't know what she is talking about? sorry, just a little confused by what you said.
I think its valid but I am not really sure what gives her the authority to write about this. I also think we should read many sources and talk to our kids dr.'s and then make an educated decision that is good for us and our family. This is not one of those things that there is a "right and wrong" answer.

I am a believer that if a kid is going to have diabetes they will have it. I dont think that starting solids at any point will be the cause. Most of the time its genetic and I'm sure happy meals do not have any part in it.

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
Babies don't need anything but breast milk until they reach 6 months. That was my motto and I stock with it despite my pediatrician advice that I can start them both on cereal and apple puree at 5 months old.
I am convinced that the choices we as parents make for out kids when they are just a few hours old influence their eating habits, as well as eating habits of their own children, for the rest of their lives.

I delayed solids until 8-9 months old because I was EBF. It worked out well for me and my DS but every child is different.

We waited until 6 months and I am glad that I did. DD is a great eater and never spit up. I have video of our first time feeding her and she opened her mouth and was ready and smiling the whole time!
I have read many articles for and against waiting, I was glad that we waited!
Same. I never understand why people are in a "rush" to start solids before 6 months.. my Ped says most new parents want to do it earlier because they're bored but there is no good reason.
With future children I wish I could wait even longer, it's a pain in the butt!

You are entitled to believe what you believe, and research shows what has been studied. I really don't think they make this stuff up
I hope no one is feeding their children under 6 months old happy meals

I agree. My mom showed me my baby book and the dr had her switch me to milk @ 2mo; add cereal, fruit and veggies @ 3mo. So many other things factor into this.

Bingo. The people I know IRL started just b/c they "wanted" to do the next thing and they were excited to see their baby "eat" food. NO medical reason. So i guess you could call that boredom.

That is what my doctor said. But I have to say the reason I waited had to do with laziness!
LOL life was so much simpler with only bottles! Wish I only had to worry about bottles now!

of course I started my son at four months b/c i was TOTALLY bored. new cooing, rollng over, smiles, giggles, laughs, extreme interest in his surroundings, and playtime was NOT enough to hold my attention in this kid. without starting solids, I would have been and tossed that little sucker to the curb.

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
maturation in every child is different. this goes for language skills, physical skills AND readiness of the stomach.
the spike in diabetes is occuring NOW, when we feed later. I honestly don't see how there could even be a correlation made.
childhood obesity...it is true we are overfeeding our kids. constant snacks, bribing with food and sedentary life styles all take it's toll. and perhaps forestalling giving food in some parents will work, but this is a cultural phenomenon. it's not about feeding too early, but feeding too much.

My mom disolved cookies into my bottle when I was under a month
Even though waiting until 6 months really worked great for us - I dont know if I believe all the other effects of waiting vs. not waiting

I know I was TOTALLY bored at 4 months. Between working full time, dealing with a baby who was up every 2 hours all night long, being sleep deprived, and still trying to figure out the whole mothering thing, I really was looking for a hobby to fill those long, empty moments. I looked into crafts, stamp collecting, tennis, but in the end, I decided trying to feed my baby solids, was the perfect boredom buster for me!

No, I acutally can see it. No so much boredom per se, but you want to kind of move on to the next thing, and it is exciting to try new foods, textures etc, to see what they like and dislike etc...

I didnt think you meant it personally. I just get a little defensive when I see threads like these because my DD is a bigger baby who NEEDED solids earlier then most so when people say things like "i dont understand the rush" or "my dr said people do it out of boredom" I get insulted. (Although there probably are parents out there who start solids for those reasons only)

All I know is that food is a PITA and he said that most parents start LATER with their second kid
We are planning a day out Friday for DD's birthday and i feel like I have to pack so much for her - adn I still give jars when we are out. Soon, she will be totally off jars and I will have to drag a cooler with me everywhere I go LOL
