Re: Is your stove gas or electric and what are the pros and cons of each??
I grew up having gas, now we have electric. (which is so weird, b/c everything else in the house is gas, including the fireplace...they cheaped out on the stove) Our appliances are new so I haven't noticed a difference with it cooking unevenly or tasting different. the oven preheats very quickly. The only con for me is cleanup...things tend to get burned on the stove top and its a PITA to get off, especially when DH cooks...he always makes a mess.
Eventually i would like to convert to gas or build a house with gas already in it.

Grew up with gas, had electric in my apartments, have gas in my house. It cooks more evenly and heats up faster.

Some of the houses that we liked had electric oven/stove tops...Not sure if there was a gas line. If there was would it be a major ordeal to switch to gas???

If you have gas in the street, keyspan will run the line to your house at no cost, but you'll need a plumber to bring the line inside and/or run a line to the stove.
And you'll need a new stove.

IF we could do it...DH's parents have a stove that is about 2 years old ready to give us...I just wanted to see what kind of ordeal it would be...I don't even know if there is gas in the street...and don't have the house yet

It wasn't a deal breaker for us. The house we bought had an electric stove. When we gutted the kitchen, we looked into converting to gas, and made it happen.

Before you bought the house did you know if it was possible or just worried about that afterwards???

Its always possible - if there's no gas in your street, you can use propane tanks. It wasn't such a concern that we would have walked away from the house.

You could hook up your stove to Propane. I have this. My house has oil heat but the stove is propane. I have the tanks right outside the house on the kitchen wall. I pay about $200 every 2 years to fill both tanks. Extremely safe as well. So even if the home you are looking at has an electric stove, you can buy a gas range and hook up propane.

Re: Is your stove gas or electric and what are the pros and cons of each??
I grew up with gas, and have at different times been subjected to electric. For me, gas stove was a must have for any house DH & I were considering buying. I have never been able to get used to the time it takes for electric to heat up and cool off. I consider myself to be a decent cook, but based on the number of meals I have ruined on an electric stove you would never know it.

Re: Is your stove gas or electric and what are the pros and cons of each??
I grew up with electric and when I first had to use gas in DH's old apartment I was so scared of it! Then we had it in our apartment and now in the house, and I prefer it over electric. However, it wasn't a deal-breaker for us. If we had loved the house and it had an electric stove, that wouldn't have deterred us. We also switched our dryer to gas in our house, so we are using as little electricity as possible.

We have electric burners and I absolutely hate it. I can't wait till we switch. It takes forever to cook.

Electric Stove - Pros - I like the oven section being digital. Easy to read Con - Can not easily change the burner settings. When it says to reduce heat, I frequently move it to a different burner since it takes so long to cool down.

i LOVE gas. it cooks food more evenly and you have more control over the temperature. the only negative part i feel is that it takes longer to preheat the oven.
I agree with everything...also when the electric goes out, you can still use your stove and oven

With a gas oven you still have a pilot light that is electric.
