Wow...it has been so long since I stopped updated this thread. To be honest, it was breaking my heart. It was kind of taking over my life a little and family was getting neglected. I needed to take a step back. However, that doesnt not mean I do not look at the Kill List every night. that doesnt mean I don't share a special cat every once in a while. That doesnt mean I dont send extra money every week to chipins or to rescues where needed.

That said, the reason I am updating tonight is because of Shadow. First, he is a black and white cat that reminds me of my own Miso. Second, he is not sick. Third, he is wearing a collar. Someone brought him in three days ago and tomorrow they are going to kill this cat. Someone's pet who obviously got lost. HE IS WEARING A COLLAR DAMMIT. That's all I have to say. If you could share his face, maybe someone knows his family. Maybe someone will adopt him. The shelter says he is aggressive but like I have mentioned time and again (and you can read all about my Sushi Girl below), you cant go by the shelter. These cats are scared...I'd also like to add that there are 67 cats scheduled to be put down tomorrow...67 kitties... To be destroyed on sunday morning.

Gradually, I have been getting sucked into helping to rescue cats. Last week I was instrumental in saving a gorgeous kitten that was going to be put to sleep. I posted her picture on facebook and a friend of mine who lost her cat last year to cancer, interrupted her date and at 1AM contacted a rescue organization and together we saved this kitty:

Every night (except for the eve of a major holiday) the NYC shelters post their "kill" list. I will make every effort to post this list here. If you feel strongly about a particular kitty, please share. If you feel REALLY strongly about a kitty, please foster or adopt. The process sucks and there is a lot of red tape, but the earlier you start the adoption process the better the chances of saving them. The shelters dont "officially" open until 8 am, but they start killing the kitties at 6am. Please feel free to FM if I can be of any assistance or you have any questions.

A friend on FB asked me today why I keep doing this...that most of these cats SHOULD be put down since they are aggressive and hissing and striking. Well, here's my story and hope you will consider it when analyzing these stupid shelter behavior ratings:

My first cat came from a town shelter. She was likely 6 weeks old (they said she was 8 weeks) and the volunteer (who bottle fed her because she was abandoned at 1 week old with no mama) practically rammed her down my throat (threw me in a room with her alone and shut the door and didn't come back for half an hour). She was barely as big as the palm of my hand (just shy of 1lb) and just kept climbing up my arm and burrowing in my neck. That day I became her "mama." When I took her to the vet, she tested positive for Fel Aids. I assume that the shelter knew all of this but she would have been destroyed, which is probably why the volunteer pushed for me to take her. At her 6 month visit she tested neg for the aids virus (she apparently got the antibodies from her mom and not the virus itself). When I think of all these shelter cats, I think of my Sushi cat. Even with all the love and security from the moment she came home with us, she has always been skittish. Not a big fan of being picked up, keeps to herself and has bouts of "hissiness" and growling. But when she needs lovin' (usually in the evening hours) she is quick to jump up on me and burrow into the crook of my arm and nuzzle my neck just like she did when I rescued her from the shelter. If something ever happened and she found her way into one of these kill shelters, she would be one of the first to be PTS. The environment would surly freak her out, she does not get along with other cats and she is "hissy" even in the best of environments. They wouldn't know that if you crumple up an old receipt into a ball and throw it, she will chase it down and bring it back to you like a dog. They wouldn't know that DaBird with the sparkler attachment is her favorite toy and will chase it for hours. They wouldn't know about the late night snuggling and how she could sit in bed all night long purring and licking my hand that was giving her chin rubs. They wouldn't know that even though she swats at nearly everyone, when my 2 y/o son tries to jam a fork in her face to share his food, she only runs away. They wouldn't know that she is harness trained and loves to be put on a lead and chase bugs for hours, especially at twilight. All they would see is a scared, "aggressive", swatting, hissing cat, that would likely be sitting in the back of her cage, wondering where her "mama" was.

This is so sad. I wish I could take them all. I pray they all find forever homes in time. You are a great person for trying to help them!

how can we help when the shelter is currently closed? I can act as a foster till a forever home comes through. DH would kill me if I straight up adopted though

The new list is out for Tomorrow, Friday, October 20, 2011. THERE ARE 57 CATS ON IT Is there anyone who will save even one? There is a mama cat tonight who is NURSING babies. A whole family will be gone tomorrow.

This is Sunny's second chance. He was evicted with his sister Abigal and were on the list together the other day. Abigal's status is unknown but Sunny for some reason was spared, only to show up on this list again. We may not know where his sister is but we know where Sunny is. He wont get a second chance. He is a little nervous but tolorates all handling and is rated beginner.

I'm SHOCKED to see so many kittens. I always thought they were very easily adopted. This breaks my heart. My mom works with a lot of dog rescues so she's going to pass it on to any animal lover friends.

I am sorry to say that while the mama and her four babies (their eyes are not even open yet) from last night are still alive, they are on the list again tonight. Most kitties dont get a second chance. This family already got one deprive, I pray that a miracle happens and they find a foster. This is their last chance

DOMINO'S FEATURED CAT: TUX (saved 2x around )
Tux's human died and instead of being consoled, she was taken to the ACC where she has found herself on death row. This beautiful kitty is emotionally wounded she is laying down with her body pressed against kennel the wall. Although she is visibly tense, she stays in place, and but allow petting. She clearly does not know why she is in a cage and not safe and warm with her "person."

The new list is out for Sunday, October 23, 2011. There are 12 cats on the list tonight. While 12 is a "low kill day" by ACC standards, for me it is 12 too many. Additionally, there is even one cat on the list with NO PICTURE and NO INFO. They basically sealed this cat's faTe. Who is going to adopt a faceless cat with not one shred of info?

DOMINO'S FEATURED CAT: `CAMILLE
Honestly, I was going to feature a different cat. One with a "prettier" picture. But my 2 year old son keeps to have been taken with Camille. As i was scrolling through the list tonight, he kept tapping the screen on her picture. She must be a special kitty. The notes say she tolerates all handling. Look how pretty she poses for the camera. Little does she know this picture will likely be her last. Wont someone please adopt or foster her? She is only 9 weeks old. She deserves to live a long happy life, safe and secure in someone's home. Not PTS tomorrow at 6am.

The new list is out for Monday, October 24, 2011. It breaks my heart because there are some gorgeous cats on the list tonight. What makes me even sadder is to see Tux on the list again. For some reason he was spared Friday night/Saturday morning, but you can bet he wont be so lucky tomorrow

Sylvia is a big girl at 15 lbs. Most certainly she was a house pet and NOT a stray. Her adorable nose almost looks as if it has been painted on and positioned purrrfectly above her tiny pink mouth. THERE must be a HOME for SYLVIA to begin a NEW LIFE, and a willing person ready to LOVE and CARE for her.

DH has been getting me down...he wants to know how long I intend on doing this "cat thing" and how many kitties I have rescued other than the first one? My response was "none...that I know of." But it is like lotto...you gotta be in it, to win it. If I had never shared that initial picture of Patricia on facebook, my friend Linda would never have known about her precious little face. I believe if I keep sharing, there will be many more success stories to share. Please, share the list with friends...sometimes a friend of a friend of a friend will step up!

While i am not "featuring" Moo Moo who is on tonight's list, I would like to give a shout out to her former owners...pet ownership is a responsibility. Gotta love your laundry list of reasons for giving up your cat, however a new baby is not an acceptable reason to give up your pet...I could go on...but i wont waste my breath

DOMINO'S FEATURED CAT: ELVIS (RIP )
I can't believe that this gorgeous cat is a stray. First, he's neutered. Second, he's almost 11 lbs and third, he's a huge love bug! His notes indicate that allows chin rubs, head butts, rolls over and purrs...dont let Elvis leave the building (unless he is leaving with you!).

The new list is out for Thursday, October 27, 2011. Tonight's list makes me a little sadder than usual. There are a lot of owner surrenders and many "beginner" rated kitties. There are also several injured cats who are forced to sit in small cages with fractured bones and no pain meds. I have been pledging money to rescues ($10/$15) toward vetting if they would pull them. I have not had to pay yet.

DOMINO'S FEATURED CAT: MING
I had to feature this cat because she reminds me of my kitty, Miso. I wish I could take another cat in: Miso and Ming would make a perfect pair Ming received the best rating you can get: "Beginner". She allows petting and chin rubs. Headbuts hand and purrs. Unfortunately she caught the shelter cold and for a sniffle and a sneeze they are going to destroy this beautiful cat. Wont someone save her?

is there any other way of helping these shelters? I have to many animals right now as is!! A little cold and she has to be put down? that seems extreme.

DOMINO'S FEATURED CAT: JAY
When I saw Jay's picture, all I could think was, how sad and yet hopefull he looked. To me his face says, "I ldont know why I'm in this cage but I'm hoping that after you snap this picture, you'll get me out of here." Jay got the highest behavior rating of "Beginner" and his notes say that Jay allows all petting and handling. Once approached arched back for petting. Make Jay's wish come true and save him from being put to sleep in the morning

i keep coming back bc i love that cat Camille and I HATE CATS! thing is my dog isn't good with them, thats holding me back....is there a test period? can i see if i can take cat and my dog be ok or not? if not, i take it back?
