Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
So we've been give the go ahead for cows milk.
When do you give your DC cows milk, how often and how much.
I wasn't given guidelines on how much she should have

My Dr said between 16-24 oz a day. I still give them bottles and they sit in their infant to toddler rockers like they did for their formula and BM bottles. My schedule is:
8AM 8 oz bottle-they suck this one down 9 Breakfast
12-1PM 6-7 oz after nap 1-1:30 Lunch
5 PM dinner 6:30 7 oz they don't always drink all of this

my ped said to do 2 ounces of cows milk with 4 ounces of formula or breastmilk for a few days ( 3 days?) and then do half and half for another 2-3 days and then do full cows milk.

I switched cold turkey at 12 months...I did 4 - five oz bottles a day! Now it is more like 2 ---7-8 oz and 2 ---5-6 oz bottle of whole milk! (a month later) he likes to nurse the bottles!

In order to get her weight up a bit, have you considered or discussed with your ped, putting her on a Go-N-Grow formula (designed for 10mos-24mos)? You may even be able to do 1/2 and 1/2. Just another option

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
My doc just said to replace a nursing session with an 8 oz bottle.
I haven't quite done this though-- because I will give Sash a bottle before her AM nap. This bottle used to be BM with her prune juice and was no where near 8 oz, but I did start adding water to it before moving to cows milk. She had dropped the nursing session a while ago-- when she started eating more food and I introduced this bottle.
Now I put 8oz of milk in there with her prune juice. Sometimes she will come close to finishing it, sometimes she'll drink like 2/3 and will finish it after she wakes up.
I haven't figured out what to do later in the day though. I will offfer a sippy with milk, but she won't really drink the whole thing-- just sips here and there. I still nurse 3 times a day.
I guess I can try dropping the afternoon nursing session and doing a bottle of milk. I was just worried about getting her used to a bottle, as opposed to a sippy. Does anyone have thoughts on that??
Anyway-- I still nurse AM and at bedtime.

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
I'm down to BFing once a day, ped said they should be getting about 24 oz of cow's milk.
So usually the day goes like this -
Nurse in AM - Jonah usually wakes up around 5:30-6:30 and nurses back to sleep until around 7 or 8. Mady will nurse when she wakes up for the day around 8, but she is actually starting to drop this - she's pushing me away, so I think I am going to stop with her - I didn't BF her this morning and she didn't care at all.
They get a 10oz cup of milk at breakfast, and usually won't finish, so they'll get the rest at lunch.
Then they drink another 10 oz or so between dinner and before bed. I'll usually give them some watered down juice after their second nap.

I'm still BFing 3-4 times during the day and then again at least 2 times throughout the night. I have yet to introduce cows milk!

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
Are you looking to wean or add cow's milk to her diet? If you want to cut back on BFing feedings, I'd do what a PP said and replace a feeding with 4-6 oz of milk to start. If you just want to add to her diet, I'd recommend giving it to her in a sippy as part of a snack, or as a snack of its own.

Please consult your ped. That *may* be too much dairy.

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
I just stopped nursing DS last month, at 15 months. At 12 months we transitioned him to cow's milk for his 2 bottles while I was at work. We initially mixed breastmilk and cow's milk. Once he was on all cow's milk, we just gave the same amount that he would have had of breast milk- 5-6 ounces.

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
I still nurse DS 3-4 times a day. At a year we started giving him 3 5oz bottles of soy milk. He had a dairy allergy early on so I am transitioning to dairy slowly. Our ped said to add 5oz every 4-5 days until all of his milk (other than nursing) is cow's milk.
DS also has a weight issue, he fell well below the chart at his 12 month visit. He has always been small (5th-10th percentile) but the large drop concerned our PED. I know you have posted about similar concerns with your DD. Our PED recommended that we add 1/2 a packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast in one of his cups of milk per day.

My PED said 16 oz in addition to BFing, but DS is underweight so we may be different.

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
At 11.5 months, I started a 4oz sippy cup of milk and still BF'ed after lunch, dinner and before bedtime. Every 2 weeks, I substituted another cup until he was fully weaned at 13 months.

I think she meant in addition because she is underweight. The ped knows that I'm not planning on weaning anytime soon. But I will double check just in case, thanks!

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
I'm only nursing once in the morning. My doctor recommending giving DS at least 14-16 oz of cow's milk. It was a struggle to get him to drink more than a few sips of cow's milk. I eventually figured out that he'd drink it if it was warmed up and in a bottle. It took about a month to get him to drink cow's milk from a sippy cup and I still usually have to warm it up.
I don't measure the amount of milk he gets. I usually fill a sippy cup 3/4 of the way with milk. I give him milk with lunch, dinner and a snack. He gets at least 3 cups of milk per day.

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
I haven't started yet but I think I'm going to try and just give him a sippy with it, see how he responds and go from there. If he likes it I'd like to replace his pre-nap nursing sessions with the cow's milk and just nurse when he wakes up and goes to sleep, then maybe drop the PM nursing session...

how long did you do the bottles before you switched to sippys?
Sasha will take water in a sippy and have a few sips here and there of milk from a sippy... but, I have tried a sippy before he AM nap, and she won't drink the milk like she will from a bottle.
I am weary of introducing another bottle, when I want her on full time sippys. Or is it more important to get her used to milk instead of nursing? I just don't know the best course of action.

DS loved water in a sippy cup, but hated milk in there. I really wanted to give up pumping so it was important to me that he start drinking milk during the day. I wanted him to give up the bottle too, but I figured I'd do one thing at a time. It took about a month of him drinking warmed up milk in the bottle before he fully transitioned to milk in a sippy cup. I'd offer at least one sippy cup of milk per day. He still prefers the milk warmed up, but at least he's drinking it in a sippy cup. He was completely off bottles by 13-13.5 months.

This is how I feel. But I have come to the conclusion that she is still just a baby - and most babies are not drinking out of sippy cups full time. So I give her milk and juice in bottles and I put water in her sippy which she likes during meals. I would love to get her full on a sippy cup, but I would rather her drink the fluids than worry about what she is drinking them out of. I will worry about elimnating the need for a bottle later.
ETA: Just this past weekend I got DD fully on cow's milk during the day - just nursing AM & PM now. She gets 2 6oz bottles and usually downs them.

Re: Moms of 12+ mos still BFing. Cow milk question
Liam wasn't BFed, but he started cow's milk at 11 months.
5AM-8 oz bottle
10AM-6oz bottle (trying to get him to take this one in a sippy before his nap)
7PM-6oz sippy of milk
throughout the day he'll graze with water/juice in the sippy
