Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
Thank you. I waited almost 9 weeks to take my DD out. The peds recommended it and as a first time mom, I felt that they knew best and they told me that for a reason. When I do have DC #2 I will wait once again.
ETA: I also agree that the woman who said that to Leslie was way out of line. She is entitled to do whatever she feels is right for HER child and anyone who thinks they have the right to tell her otherwise, is RIDICULOUS

ITA
I waited with my first 7.5 weeks, went to my neices outside communion party and had my baby's spinal three days later because he cought an unexplained fever. If he had that fever two days later he would not have needed a spinal. So it makes a difference.
I keep my babies out of public places, that is my preference.

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I have to say I agree with you , I thouhgt the other thread did have that tone of .its ridicoulous if you don't take your NB out right away.
But I stayed away form it, because I feel like hey do what is best for your kid and I'll do what is best for mine.
For the record I thought that lady's comment to Leslie was inappropriate.

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
Ok- Not really related to this thread but... We were ultra careful with DD- we did take walks and such since we live in LA the weather was great in Jan. but avoided the public places.
Then Grandma came to stay for two weeks, WITH BRONCHITIS. Of course she didn't say it was, just her usual "lung condition" and that is was ok for her to coughing around the baby since it wasn't contagious. Well, guess what- four days after her arrival we are in the hospital with RSV.
SO please, even family events you really need to monitor closely. This time I give birth- no one with even a sniffle is allowed in my home. I don't care if they say they aren't contagious or its an allergy. My ped said that's the case with lots of older people with chronic conditions. They really don't know they are sick.
Sorry to hijack but wanted to share...

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I think people should do whatever they feel is right for them and their family.
And stop worrying what other people say about it.
Be secure in your choices. People judge...that's what we as humans do. That will never stop and we will all be judged and judge others at some point.

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
Its personal preference here. I was one of the girls that said it was ridiculous but it was meant towards the woman who put her nose somewhere it didnt belong.
I also do not think its a competition. I could really care less what other people do with their NBs - its their decision whether to take a NB out in public.
You see, I had my DD in January so it was quite cold and if I didnt venture out my PPD would have even been worse. Walks in January were non-existent.
I think you should re-read the post again. I didnt see any harm in it. Thats just my opinion.

I actually commented on the fact that I may have misunderstood. Did you read the whole thread?

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I didn't take out in public until 8 weeks per Drs orders... It didn't feel ridiculous- it felt like the right thing for me to do. I guess other people thought it was crazy - but then I was also the crazy lady yelling at people to wash their hands before touching the baby!

I don't think it makes us crazy at all to make people wash their hands! I plan to do that and more. I will wait out the 2 mths if that is what my dr recommends.
My family members and my ILs better not even think of putting hands all over my baby's hands, kissing my baby's hands or face, etc, or shove their faces in my baby's face. You just never know what ANYONE has brewing IMO. So washing their hands will be the least of the rules, LOL.

I'm with you! I honestly can't remember the first time I took DC into a public place but I definitely waited past 4 weeks. Like you, I also took him for walks etc...

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I didn't take Athan anywhere beyond my mothers house for 6 weeks and I plan on doing the same the same if I am blessed enough to have another child. I personally didn't want him out in public spaces when he was little and his immune system was week . It was my personal decision and I spoke to his pediatrician about it and he agreed. Everyone does what they need to do or feel comfortable doing. I would never judge anyone for taking a NB out, nor would I like to be judged for keeping my baby in.

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I really think most people were talking about that lady putting her .02 in.
But you have to do what makes you comfortable, but for us, we didn't have an option, we had to find a place to live and move within the first 5 weeks of Christopher's life so we didn't have a choice. Luckily, it was May, so that helped.
My doctor also never mentioned that we should stay home, neither did anyone in our families, so I didn't realize people did that, KWIM?

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I didn't take my son out in public until he was about 9 weeks old. I don't really consider a friends house or outside for a walk to be the same as going to a mall or restaurant though. Houses and outside for a walk are much different than a crowded indoor space. My doctor told me no indoor public places until he was 2 months.
I think that you need to do what's best for you and your family, however, I think that people underestimate the risks of your little one getting sick in the first few months of life. If they get a fever it can be VERY serious. Babies don't have the immune systems that adults have. I would NEVER say anything to anyone about a personal choice that they make, however I do think it's a little strange to take your newborn baby to a crowded public place. It's such a short, short time out of your life to stay home and enjoy your baby. Why risk it???

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I am totally there with you. My pediatrician gave us the spinal tap speech during our first visit. My DD and DS was/will be born during cold/flu seasons and I did and will wait to take my kids out for several weeks. To each his own

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I totally agree with you. DS was born in early March, and DC-to-be is coming in early Feb. I had no desire to be relieving my "cabin fever" in an emergency room, KWIM?
I actually know two people whose newborns ended up hospitalized with spinal taps, because they were "bored" and needed to go to the mall, restaurant, etc. Their warnings to me were enough to keep me at home for the first several weeks. It's actually nice to veg out at home with your brand new little one anyway :)
However, annoying old people at diners DO need to mind their own business!

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
My son was born during a particulary rainy and chilly spring.
After 2 weeks we took him out for walks in the neighborhood during the sunny and warm days.
As per our pediatrician's instructions, we did not go out in public, and around people until he was 6 weeks old.
Perhaps if our son had been born during the warm summer we would have behaved differently.
Each parent has to make their own decision.

Re: My $0.2 on taking NBs in public places
I definitely think you do what is right for you. To be honest, no matter what you do there is a risk. We did take DS out when he was a week old and after. Well DH got the flu when DS was two weeks old. He was exposed to it at home, not out. Luckily he did not get sick but I could have kept him home and he still would have been exposed to it. You have to do what is right for you and no one should second guess or judge anyone else's decisions. JMO
