Re: Newborn vent: what's normal, and when is there something wrong?

I agree with PP as well.

I would ask for a referral to a gastro dr.

DS had a severe milk protein allergy that luckily I caught when he was just 6 weeks old. He was very gassy all. the. time. He passed the gas a lot. I have videos of him farting like a machine gun. He didn't start spitting up/ vomiting until he was about 6 weeks. He was never a crier ( I was very fortunate), but he always seemed uncomfortable. I EBF in the beginning and I felt like he was always at my breast. I had him on alimentum and it actually got worse. I had to put him on elecare and finally at 5 months old his stool was normal and free of blood.

He also had reflux. He had silent reflux. Again, he seemed uncomfortable... arched his back a lot during nursing. And I heard the nursing constantly was not because of a growth spurt, but because milk helps soothe the symptoms of burning. I had him on zantac till he was about 10 months old.

IMO its worth looking into. A lot of babies digestive systems are immature and need special care to help them along until they grow out of it.

Best of luck!

Re: Newborn vent: what's normal, and when is there something wrong?

My first DS was like this- he had silent reflux. We put him on Alimentum formula and he took Prevacid before feedings, for about 2 months.

It helped but he was still a "cranky" baby who rarely just hung out. He was calm when he was swaddled or rocked, or bounced. He slept in a reclined position for the first 4 months.

My second DS was very gassy and fussy, but no reflux. This lasted until he was about 3 months old.

My ped said many babies are just fussy for their first 3 months of life- no medical reason other than they have trouble settling themselves down. Yet, I know many people whose babies had issues with milk allergies and reflux, and that was why they were fussy. In that case, a doctor can help you find out how to help

Chat Icon Chat Icon We all know how you feel. The first 3 months are so tough. It does get better. Sometimes my husband would say our son had multiple personalities, some moments he was happy the next second he was crying. As soon as the 3 mark hit he became a different baby. My son is also on zantac for reflux so maybe that is why we did not notice the fussiness as much.
Good Luck!

Re: Newborn vent: what's normal, and when is there something wrong?

The newborn stage is so tough. DS1 never wanted to be put down. Eventually I got him to take 1 nap in the swing, but other than that, he needed to be in our arms. Since it was winter, I also stayed inside a lot. I held him for the first 6 months at night. It was awful. He did have reflux, but was more of a happy spitter.

I'm only 10 days into the newborn stage with DS2, but so far, he's a totally different baby. I'm afraid that at some point he'll change and won't let me put him down. Hang in there. I'd definitely bring up your concerns to the pediatrician though just to rule out reflux or some type of allergy to the formula. Chat Icon

my twins had silent reflux, and different things worked for them. its tough b/c sometimes it is a little bit of trial and error.

for my son ... i put 1/4 tsp of mylanta in his bottles and it helped.
my daughter....gripe water helped

also used mylicon 2 times a day for them.

Re: Newborn vent: what's normal, and when is there something wrong?

This stage is SO hard!! DS would always cry too. I started wearing him in a Moby wrap and it helped so much! We had a few formula switches too. At that age I was also using gripe water and mylicon drops with every bottle. I also switched to playtex drop ins and I swear that helped too.
DS screamed, grunted and cried in his sleep as well. When I asked the ped, describing DS as miserable, he said, if he were miserable, he wouldn't be sleeping..
