Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
OK, so my little brother and his wife decided to not vaccinate their child(she is currently p/g with their 1st) Well, she decided and he is going for the ride(but that's a whole other story) Anyway, this child will be in daycare(probably full time) and will attend public school on Long Island. How does that work? I told her that I did not think this can happen. She insists I am wrong. Maybe I am, please enlighten me. What are the laws/requirements?

You can file a religious exemption in any school/day care with relative ease.

Even is the kid will be Christened in the Catholic church?

Yep. The law is based off of personal religious beliefs, it doesn't have to be the same as the church's stance.

Re: Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
Most schools in NY will challenge you on your religious beliefs. It's not as easy in NY as other states. A quick search on Google shows a lot of first-hand experience about being questioned about the "sincerity" of the religious beliefs, the challenges involved, people hiring lawyers, etc. If certain medicines are used for the child (cough syrup, etc), it makes it very difficult to say you object to putting chemicals in their bodies.

Re: Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
One of my friends has not and will not vaccinate her children. Both children currently attend preschool and she has only had to fill out paperwork stating that they do not vaccinate their children & a note from the doctor stating that her children are in good health. This is the lifestyle her family lives---they live a lifestyle as green as can be---no cooked food, no TV, etc.

It is difficult but it's also becoming more common to argue it.
If they are in NY, the only grounds they have are religious & medical.
My sister was told using the words "It is my god given right not to vaccinate my child." is very important.
Whether they were christened or not, doesn't mean the parents haven't looked into Christian Scientists churches.
Here's a good website: http://www.vaclib.org/exempt/newyork.htm

Yep. The law is based off of personal religious beliefs, it doesn't have to be the same as the church's stance.
There was just a case in Commack where the district really questioned the parents about the religious beliefs, and once it came out that the mother felt more strongly about the connection b/w autism, etc. and vaccines, they were denied their appeal for no vaccinations since it was not based on a religious reason.
They'll be asked to prove it, so she better start her case now as to why she can't for religious reasons.

Good luck!
I was afraid to take my kid to the mall/anywhere with crowds without vaccines...
It sounds like you are pro-vaccines (or not anti-vaccines): I'd just let her discuss it with her pediatrician.

Same for my sister. Her one son has a few vaccines and when he had a bad reaction to one she stopped and her younger son has none. They are both in public schools with no problem.

Re: Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
that scares the hell out of me. not even for my own child, necessariliy (b/c he IS vaccinated) but for theirs
there is SO much out there that he/she will be susceptible to. IMO, the good from vaccines outweighs the bad but I guess that is why it is an opinion.
my SIL's brother has not vaccinated his 7 month old and I feel like the decision is a ticking time bomb.

I know. Very scary especially when you hear measles making a comeback, whoping cough, etc. This is why I make sure she gets all her shots on time- because more and more people are NOT vaccinating and GOD knows what she can pick up if the schools are just going to let every unvaccinated kid in under the guise of "religious beliefs". Disturbing.

My cousin didn't have her DC vaccincated. Her DH ended up getting whooping cough and giving it to both kids because they didn't have the vaccinations. She said it was HORRIBLE and the cough lasted over 3 months. Apparently they call it the 100 day cough. We're talking about coughing to the point where they couldn't catch their breath. Poor munchkins.

That is not true at all. Certain districts will challenge parents, but a majority will accept a well written exemption letter without any further questioning. The medicine thing isn't true either. People who have vaccinated their child before and then stopped have been granted exemptions as well. It's not as difficult as many people would like you to think.

Re: Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
It can absolutely happen. I know someone who has done it. Their children are catholic as well. Actually some of their arguments for particular vaccines are rooted in their catholic beliefs. No problems whatsoever. There are groups that will help her with whatever paperwork etc. needs to be done. If she does a little research into it she will find all her answers. The medicine thing I have NEVER heard of!

ITA...I'm not taking chances in not vaccinating DS. There are too many cases of diseases that have not been around in so long because people have decided to stop vaccinating.
They can take all the chances they want. I'm not the gambling type with things like this.

Re: Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
Well, here is my take on it.
When a new child enters my daycare I cannot take them without all the forms filled out. These forms are from the dept. of health, medical forms where all the shots are listed, etc. If a parent tells me they dont vaccinate their kids, well, thats their choice BUT I would contact the dept. of health and make sure I can legally accept that child AND ***if other parents need to know this child is not vaccinated.
Thankfully in my 11+ years in business I have never once ran into this issue.

Re: Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
I don't understand why parents who are afraid of vaccination just do what is highly recommended and space them out. I mean I get not doing the chickenpox and flu shots but the MMR are so important.
i understand the fear of shots and whats in them but the only thing that i find coming up is that you need to properly space them. My cat's vet won't do more then two shots a visit - she spaces them out because the antibodies in your body go into overdrive when something is introduced. I get fevers when I get shots (recently had to do a series because of bite) and i also get loopy but i had no choice i had to get the series not a single shot. Most doctors just allow you to space things out so your body can adjust.

It's funny but when I read what you just wrote about "gambling" it reminded me of the thread last week week where people were talking about eating sushi, eating cold cuts, etc while pregnant. And it was said that listeria can happen at any time- even if you eat coldcuts in moderation- and eating them was a "gamble" with your unborn baby's health. It just seems ironic that people will not eat coldcuts, sushi, drink alcohol etc while pregnant but then take a gamble with a deadly disease after the baby is born by not vaccinating.

This is not true. And it is very easy to explain the exemption is not about chemicals but about Human DNA from aborted fetus' in the vaccine, and that is why, as a Catholic, you do not want to give vaccines.

See I always think it is funny that people freak about eating cold cuts but don't even so much as flinch when they inject their babies with formaldehyde, and chick embryo.

It is scary, and I do have a problem with people lying about their religions beliefs to get out of vaccinating their children. We staggered vaccines, whether this helps or not, who knows, but I felt better doing that. We also turned down a couple that were not essential. I do not feel okay with not getting any vaccines for DS.
And yes, these diseases are making a comeback. I had whooping cough last winter myself--it took quite awhile to get it diagnosed, initially my doctor thought it was bronchitis. Why did I get it? My DTAP vaccine was out of date. But I can say, it was nasty stuff, and I was sick for about 3 months. I would not wish that illness on a child, and thank God DS and DH didn't get it, probably because they had their vaccines.

would you put your child through chemo if he had cancer? do you know what makes up chemo drugs and what it does to your system? I have a feeling you will say yes because it could save his life. vaccines SAVE lives too. we do what we have to do.

Well I didn't freak out abuot eating coldcuts, drinking wine, drinking coffee or eating anything while pregnant- nor do I freak out about vaccines or non- organic food now that she is here. So at least I am consistant!
